My money is on fingerprint sensor on the back, NFC on the front (in the screen!!!).

NFC as part of the back (Just above/around the logo), and fingerprint sensor will be part of the power button on the top.

I think NFC has a chance, but the fingerprint sensor will be a 5S feature, and the button will be almost the same, just a little wider

I work in a high security building in the govt and the doors have these sensors/cameras (?) on them that can recognize your photo on our ID badges. You just line up you photo with this hole and it opens the door. So, the technology certainly exists for Apple to implement facial recognition to unlock our phones. Finger printing would be a bit much imo.

I'm pretty sure Apple has a face recog patent to boot. And if they ever implement NFC or some similar type of payment utility, Finger Print scanning is almost necessary. IMO.

Don't know if this has been said earlier in the thread but could there be the possibility of the NFC signal being passed through the screen as opposed to the back.

We've all heard how it would be a challenge to have signal pass through aluminium, but how about the screen. (With thinner in cell technology / battery above it?)

Then, if the cutout was in fact for a scanner, it would be face up as you make a payment. (Possible screen scratch issues though etc)

Just a thought .....

I'm not walking around with nuclear launch codes in my phone, I'm not sure I see the benefit of a finger print scanner. I have one on my gun safe because my wife required something other than a key or code that the kids could possibly find or figure out. It works well 80% of the time. I'm waiting for the time I need it and have to use 4 different fingers for it to read before it opens and we're all dead.

I see that the mystery cutout is still visible in the latest leak photos:

i wonder why none of the major rumors sites are questioning why there's a massive cutout in the top of the phone. Why else would would it exists unless something needs to be hidden behind the glass but be able to 'see' out?

So today's news is a patent Apple has on backside sensors being used for additional input.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...could_lead_to_backside_input_for_tablets.html

Authentec list one of the features of the sensor as a 500dpi virtual joystick, or programmable button which performs different actions based on which finger's are touching.

Come to think of it, the fingerprint sensor could be the start of backside sensors for handheld gaming!

Now that's more like it :D

Seems very un-Apple like to me. Had it before on a pc and it was a complete gimmick.

I owned 2 pcs that had it. On one it never worked and was complete crap. On another, it worked almost 99.9% of the time - no matter how fast I swipes (different design than first). I think if the technology is invented well and tested, it will work. However, as stated in your post, this concept seems unlike something Apple would produce or implement.

Would a fingerprint sensor mounted behind glass on the back of the iPhone function correctly if the phone owner puts a case on the iPhone?

Yes if the owner places a case designed for the new iPhone :)

I think that there might be something in store and if not the best-kept secret behind the new iPhone - this could very much be the iPhone's next unique and revolutionary selling point.

The iOS 6 icon looks like a bit of a fingerprint, and they bought a fingerprint sensor company. I think it's silly to say that it won't happen, but the question is when. My money is on this iPhone.

Anyway, just giving this thread a little bump in anticipation of everyone congratulating me one my awesomeness later on today :)

Could the mystery cutout just be there to save weight? Rather than have plastic where it isn't needed...

Haha i like the guys who say an fingerprint reader isnt apply style. Fingerprint on screen ===super secured and easy, aka apple style.
And if it doesnt work because a cut on the finger or whatever, still have the alternative code ulock.

@chronic just said on twitter he still thinks that the new iPhone will have NFC, not necessarily NFC payments straight away, that's iOS stuff. Made no mention of fingerprint scanner though.

Apple holds a patent on technology that allows an NFC signal to pass thru a metal enclosure.

unlocking the iphone, that passbook and NFC would be really welcome when they join the iphone 5 together with a fingerprint scanner. it simply fits.

But realisticly, it wont have a fingerprint scanner.

This thread is desame as some days before the new ipad launched where people said the new ipad may have tactile feedback display.
