Of course it will be soldered/glued in. Apple wants you to pay full price, up front, for all projected needs you may ever have, from your MBP.

Bean counters and supply chain zealots are in charge.
Well said.

When they kept the same form factor for the 2014 Mac mini, yet glued everything in, that showed us that Apple no longer cares about consumers, IMHO.

Apple actually had the 2012 Mac mini with Intel Core i7 and upgradable RAM for sale this week.

People gobbled them up and they went out of stock in a few hours.

POSTED IN ANOTHER THREAD:

All I know is I am ready, money is too. I have two request I hope they fulfill:

1. Replaceable M.2 (sometime in the next 4 years)
2. USB-C to Lightning, straight cable no adapters, I need 2.
3. Magsafe? Never Gonna Happen! I am going to miss this so much.

I sit on the couch and develop with MacBook plugged in 99% of the time.
I hit that power cable like once every 3 months, as it slips between my toes
Not bad but in 4 years. That's 12-16 possible times I could have BROKE the damn thing...

That should do it for me. If I can't replace the M.2 then I am probably going to get the 2015
Apple is getting kinda lame with the Soldering, especially if they start to charge ridiculous prices
for SSDs

I am thinking September...

It's starting to burn tho... it will be my first Retina Mac. UGH

p.s. I think they have to NOT SOLDER tho
because SSDs FAIL
RAM not so much. All tho SSDs are getting more like a RAM chip.

But NO MATTER what SSDs WEAR OUT...so take that for what it's worth...

edit: They already have the cables! man times go by...

I have a feeling this will eventually happen.

The current generation MacBook Pro uses a socketed SSD that Apple chose not to adopt in the 12" MacBook due to size and thickness constraints. The PCIe SSD header on the Logic Board is one of the tallest surface mount components on there, so if Apple is looking to shave some thickness off the next generation model, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pro follow in the footsteps of the MacBook and move those flash chips to the Logic Board.

That'll be extremely fun for data recovery.

I agree. And another reason why Cook is shoving the "cloud" down our throats. If all data is held in the "cloud" then it can be recovered/replaced at will regardless of the device you are using. I am not a fan of "cloud" data retention but I see the writing on the wall.

Complete BS on Apple's part. I mean I am glad I have a 2015 rMBP because these new rMBP's are such a turn off, especially now knowing that ZERO part of the machine can be user upgradeable. At least I can change my SSD to whatever I want. Apple needs to end this crap, and at least let users upgrade their RAM & SSD, obviously CPU would be nice but that will never happen.

Quick question: If I wanted to change the stock Apple SSD in my machine, which company and drive(s) are the best? Will I only get the same speeds as Apples SSD or are there even faster SSDs from other companies? Thank you in advance!!

My current machine: Early-2015 13" rMBP.

These are the only ones that exist (that I know of, because they (macsales) work on/with the Apple hardware specifically to make the SSDs work):

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/macbook-pro-retina-display/2013-2014-2015

They are a little slower than the Home Grown Apple built-in ones on the read time, Apple's get about 1500 MB/s, where as macsales is claiming 750. But if you are retiring a MacBook 2015 to say your game room or something, or for some dedicated project, in say 5 years it's nice to know you can design what you need, space wise.

The 2016's are recyclable and "Soda Can Macs" Expensive as hell tho if you want a dGPU. I just don't know how they could last more than 5 years with heavy use on the SSDs.

I honestly think in 5 years they will phase out Intel Macs and go completely ARM based. With ArmBooks.

Where you could buy like a really fast 16 core "MacBook Pro" that has an ARM processor with maybe even LTE (or whatever is next) and then it'll only cost $1200, but will be comparable to a $2000 MacBook Pro... it'll be ARM and there won't be any "Rosetta" or emulation, and if there is it'll be slow emulation... it'll be fun tho!

I almost wrote a post on appleinsider.com, how I would just like Apple to fold and pay out all the money to everyone, because people don't know the future of computers Apple has more of a grip on the computing world than most of the guys who keep BITCHIN... it's a joke.

We get what we get stop complaining.

Look at the Playstation 4 and Xbox One and now One S.

They make essentially 1 model, and that's that, you either like it or shut up... Apple does a pretty good job of giving people 5-10 different choices!

There is ONLY ONE caveat to my Theory.

Intel's Optane architecture, I think this is Intel's only chance to keep a lock on everyone using Intel. Optane is freaking sick!
