Considering what happened to the Mac Mini i think it is a safe bet that Apple is phasing out the ODD. The Mac App store as well as Lion are supporting evidence that Apple is trying to channel their customers towards downloading digital content from Apple's online stores.

Now going back to the MBP, i think the next revision will not include the ODD and it will have a new case redesign. I also think that they will move away from the standart 2.5" HDD-SSD drives replacing them with MBA style blade SSD. Doing that Apple could make the MBP much lighter (4.5lb) and thinner (0.7") put a much bigger battery and easily achieve 10+ hours of battery life. Now the 13" MBP will be gone and the 11 - 13" (dual core, integrated GFX) MBA will be the entry level offering for students and casual users, with the 15-17" (quad Core, dedicated GFX) MBP becoming the real Pro machines.

There is too much precious space inside the MBP occupied by the ODD and 2.5" HDD (SSD). Together they roughly take 50% of the space (volume) inside the MBP. Immagine the magic that Johny Ive can do with that much "free" space. Bigger battery (>10 hours), better GFX, slimmer and lighter laptop...

Sounds good to me, I can't wait!

Nope, it's out.

The rumor is, is that Apple is coming with a redesign this year already around X-mas. It will be thinner and lighter MBP's in the style of the MBA. Hence the ODD will be dropped most likely.

Haven't even touched my ODD since I got my new MBP in May this year. It'll still be nice to have for a few more years, just in case I need it for something. But I doubt that I'll use it. And by the time I get rid of this MBP, the ODD will definitely be gone

Same old arguments as the floppy disk era. It will die, and my guess following the MBA and Mac Mini, is soon.

I really think Apple will remove the CD drive with the next redesign. Optical disks and clearly on the way out and this redesign will likely be around till 2015 or 2016. If you think using your disk drive on your laptop NOW is rare, imagine how outdated that will be in 2016... Apple likes to push where the market is heading, not necessarily where it is right now. Sure it will be controversial in 2012. But in 2014 we won't even be able to imagine buying a laptop WITH an optical disk drive.

at minimum it at least should be removed in the 13" model. The extra size and weight isn't justified in such a small frame. It can be thinner, lighter, and have a better battery.

In fact, I could feasibly see Apple dropping the whitebook and making ALL 13" notebooks called "Macbooks" again and leave the macbook pro moniker to the 15" and 17".

Although with the mba it might be tricky to differientiate from the mb to the 13" mba. I'm sure Apple would figure something out, maybe merge the lines in some way.

Apple no longer sells the standard MacBook
