Hmm. Looks like no update for NAB. I was hoping for one. Maybe it still comes but I doubt it

http://fcpx.tv/Pages/fcpxnab2016.html

At the offsite FCPX meetings attendees were apparently required to sign NDAs so something is brewing. When Apple reveals it is anyone's guess though.

Yes, my original comment was perhaps an unfair indictment of Premier fans, however I still consider it to be, anecdotally, a fair assessment based on what I've seen within my industry.

I'm a member of user groups for MC, PPro and X and there is more than enough infantile mudslinging to go around. My only surprise is the X users that think it's something new and that they are getting singled out. And, yes, the lack of historical context does only seem to be coming from some X users. When MC was new it was mocked by people that cut on film. When FCP was new it was mocked by Avid users and Avid was in turn mocked by FCP users. Premiere/Premiere Pro has been mocked by both FCP and/or Avid users for the better part of 20yrs. I assume there was always a level of mocking coming from the Premiere camp as well, but I honestly don't know because it wasn't until rather recently that I knew anyone that was using Premiere besides the Bandito Brothers (whom have been waving the Premiere flag since 2005 or so).

What I really want to know is whether someone should hold off on buying in case this requires full payment all over again.

The word out of NAB seems to be good. A lot of people seem to be impressed. I don't know if it is just jealous curiosity, but I feel Apple should have been more open about this. Put a lot of people in a room and tell them they can't breath a word about what they see and the Reality Distortion Field gets turned up to 11. This is kind of what they did with the original release, showed it off and then went back into hiding without giving broad previews and taking broad community feedback and the word from people in attendance was positive then too. I'm not trying to be negative, but I am worried. The bigger the hype/hope, the harder this will crash if the release is not on the nose.

I wonder how long it takes until something is getting out. I really wonder what it could be. For me (just for me!) the main thing missing is proper audio editing either in FCPX itself or by round tripping or even better auto sync in a way that you could have both apps open at the same time and they could work on the project in parallel . I mean of course just one person at one computer. Not multiple persons on many machines. So that the program using the project "locks" it. Well thats like round tripping. Even Garageband would be fantastic as a audio editor.

Perhaps we should just dream away...

I think iPad support, Force Touch support (if it's not already there), HEVC support, and FCPX-style treatment of Aperture.

Cloud computing would be nice, too, but my 2012 Mac Mini is just fine so I personally wouldn't need it.

If we're wishing, my hope is that we'll see at least a preview of the update at WWDC along with updates to the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.

If we're dreaming, they'd show it off along with updated and redesigned Mac Pros that use industry standard parts again.

If we're tripping, they'd announce that FCP, Logic and pro hardware teams are being spun off into their own subsidiary like FileMaker, with it's own management and engineering teams. The new company will focus on providing the best experience and support for creative and pro users. Recognize the needs/development cycle of a true pro user do not line up with those of the average consumer. They get some solid, industry connected people involved in running it, partner up directly with some 3rd parties, build some **** that becomes the new industry standard, kick ass and take names again.

So no preview at wwdc. Was not really to be expected at a dev conference. I am wondering if any more information leaked out from that secret nab meeting

I was wondering whether it had anything to do with the changes to Photos, though if this were the case then we would see a confession now that the cat would be out of the bag.

So it seems we can keep hoping for even more. Could it be to do with VR, or similar functions to Photos?

They could be more tie-ins between X and macOS so they are waiting for macOS to drop before the release the next version of X. Also, Apple tends to move their teams around so maybe there's more important work to be done with macOS and/or iOS right now so X has a smaller team than normal working on it.

Based on what was shown at WWDC, I would say the "wow" that is coming is the automatic generation of metadata for the video clips and scenes. Just click a button and all your clips and scenes get tagged with metadata. What a wonderful world that would be.

Agreed, this might really help. In particular in documentary work. Not so much for features...

So, whenever Intel gets their bits sorted, there should be a flood of pro gear and some software. The new Intel stuff must have lots of promise or the the old stuff just wasn't worth the re-engineering time. No doubt, as has been said, Sierra will have a significant part to play in this new world. Hopefully there will be more than one port and MagSafe remains. Plugging in power is so last century, I can't believe it's still a thing with any of their portables (iStuff most definitely included).

So NAB was when ? April ? 5 month ago ? So nothing so far and also no new rumors. I am still wandering if we see a paid upgrade again or if this is a once in a lifetime purchase and Apple keeps upgrading for free. Same for Logic btw.

I don't think they dare charge for updates to either app right now. When/if they finally get around to giving us real updates to the pro laptops and workstation, they need all the incentive they can to get people to drop a minimum of $3k on a new system. Charge me again for FCPx and Resolve on Linux starts to look pretty damn good...
