iPad was released April 3, 2010

iPad 2 was released March 11, 2011

What was that you were saying about February? :)

p.s. anybody who thinks a new iPad is coming out again this year is out of their ****ing mind.

in my opinion, iPad3 is coming out on September 2012, together with iOS 6, iPod6 and iPhone6, making September the month of iOS refreshes. Uh, and next year you'll be able to get a discounted iPad2 with Back to School, you know, clearance. Assuming you'll be actually able to find an iPad 2 in a store by June 2012.

For:

The Easter update cycle is hurting Apple as people are less willing to buy iPads for Christmas if they know they will be outdated a few months later.

Introducing a new model in September/October will boost Christmas sales and allow for a discount as part of the educational B2S offer.

There are scheduled to be big innovations this autumn including high ppi displays and new GPUs so Apple would like to be at the forefront of this and appear to be a leader.

The poor quality of the cameras in iPad 2 maybe suggests something better is coming?

Against:

Would annoy all the people who bought iPad 2 that it didn't even remain cutting edge for a year.

Goes against the "2011 is the year of the iPad 2" line

Would overshadow any introduction of new iPods/AppleTVs

High ppi displays and new PowerVR chips might be delayed or in short supply.

Overall it may be that Apple was looking to launch later this year, but for whatever reason changed their minds (supply problems probably) - it's still possible they might cut $100 off the iPad 2 and keep it around and introduce the iPad 3 as the premium version, but with 6 SKUs around already, that might be overkill. I was tempted by iPad 2, but knowing the high-ppi displays are around the corner is enough to make me wait.

They could just not release iPad 3 until Christmas 2012. Or is that crazy talk?

Since there is absolutely no evidence that apple will release another iPad this year I can't say anything regarding it.

But I can say one thing. If Apple releases another iPad this year the amount of anger and ranting on this forum will increase exponentially.

Releasing everything all at once seems like it would be very difficult, the queues are bad enough when the iPhone and iPad are released separately! If the iPhone launch is moved to September then my money is on the iPad launch being moved back slightly to April or May. That would be far enough away from Christmas to not make presents instantly outdated while not overlapping with a September iPhone launch.

I agree I started this thread as I read blogs and rumours and I heard an IPad 3 even before the IPad 2 was announced.

The biggest argument against it is the IPad is already miles ahead of other tablets plus to get it into mass production by Christmas would be a big ask. Retailers would also be angry as they need to clear off stock they usually reduce the price of IPods a month before the new model.

With all due respect to Apple, I'm beginning to think they have lost their way in shoving so many new devices out so frequently.

Yes, this is business

Yes, they are there to make money

Yes, they are on top

But is this really necessary?

Honestly, I truly believe the only reason we had Antennagate is that once Steve was notified that the antenna was a problem, he forced them to ship it so as to get it into the stores before the huge wave of Android devices that Verizon and others launched last year.

Just think of how well that phone would be thought of, if it had a good antenna... (not everyone is a fanboy that accepts anything)

And YES, I can hear the stampede of fanboys headed to bash this post, but come on guys, and gals, let's get real we ALL Want the Best for Apple!

They are ALREADY Winning... what more do they want?

It's not gonna happen if they continue to stumble and have to go on the defensive as they did with Antennagate.

The REAL truth is I still get asked about the issue, by NON enthusiasts.

Apple is so loaded with cash, so successful that they can pull these stunts right now and get away with it.. but for how much longer?

While they will not go out of business, they could certainly take a hit.

Think about it, I do.

Once a year is hardly "frequently" by industry standards. Most of the smartphone manufacturers have multiple releases a year. Updating the brand new tablet format annually is indeed a business necessity, just like new car models are a business necessity. If you want to maintain sales at or above the prior year's you need to introduce an updated product.
