You can easily find MDDs on eBay or Gumtree for less than £40. It is not worth sinking a great deal of money into them unless they have particular sentimental value.

Ah, but you see, my original error (due to ignorance) was that I bought an MDD rather than what I should've done, which is bought a pre-2002 Quicksilver (which is the old machine I've been trying to duplicate the setup for). Much of the two threads I've started about has been about seeing if I can make it happen with the MDD, and it's been a long and tortuous process. Just thinking I should cut my losses.
 
In that case grab your restore images from Macintoshgarden and find ASD 2.6.3 so that you can check that your hardware is ok. If so, you can wait awhile until your disks appear for a more reasonable amount on eBay. Either way, Apple won't be seeing a penny of your money. It is just an honour system. I was fortunate that both my Quicksilvers came with a full set of disks .
