Re: your iPad—it’s interesting how we can not even know of or care about a product’s existence at one point in our lives, then not too long later we feel we can’t function without it. We can even be vehemently against it at first. Even some of our most necessary items today got a healthy dose of initial skepticism and mockery—the car (“get a horse”), and the cell phone (“how important do you think you are”). It just goes to show we don’t always know what we want or need (or will want or need), as humbling as that is to admit.

But as far as whether or not we need/want the VP, that is very much yet to be determined. It does have interesting parallels though to the electric car made popular by Tesla. It is an expensive first product for well-off and enthusiast buyers, with the hopes of eventually bringing it to everyone. And Tesla had many mockers at first too. Still has mockers, but less as Tesla has gotten very popular. We’ll see how the VP does.
Tbqh before the demo Apple did at WWDC 2023 I had 0 interest in AR. However, after seeing that Im in. I can see how it would vastly improve my workflow.

Yeah I’m waiting to see how well it multitasks.
And yeah standalone is good but I also wish it could physically tether to a Mac to get maximum bandwidth for the most serious work sessions.
I would love if VP could tether to my mac directly and offer up multiple windows and charge at the same time.

We still don’t know the degree of multitasking available in VisionOS compared to MacOS. I also kinda like the thought of a headset connected to a future Mac compared to this standalone headset that is not mobile really.
I would like the option at least. Then if im working i could have the windows etc in the virtual space be swipeable like the mac either with the mouse or keyboard or with the fingers and eyes.

In the short term? Not really. Won’t be super mainstream for awhile. When they build it out over the next few years and release a cheaper version, even if it’s $2k, people will justify it by saying “I don’t really need to update my phone anymore since we’ve peaked on smartphones. Same for my MacBook or iPad. May as well just use the money I would’ve used for a new iPhone and iPad and just get a fusion pro”

And with people paying in payments more and more, they’ll feel it’s easier to justify. 24 month payoff is $83 a month. 36 month loan $55 a month. Which is basically what people pay already for their smartphone payments.

There will be events people won’t want to miss in vr millions will tune in for. It’ll feel like being part of a special club “so and so concert is on Friday. You going in vr?” Or “Super Bowl courtside in vr”. It will be something that people will be so into the idea of a flat 2d image will seem archaic.

But it’s gonna take time. The first gen everybody’s gonna dismiss it. Say it’s too expensive. It’s for rich kids. Not see the use. 2nd gen useful updates. 3rd gen a cheaper version and more uses.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it took 6-7 years before its mainstream, but when its mainstream its gonna be everywhere and we will look back on this and appreciate how big the transition was
