Booya!

Any updates on this guys? are we looking at 2013 before we get a new Thunderbolt/Cinema display?

An aquaintance of mine claimed that an Apple representative had adviced him not to buy an iMac right now, but rather in a months time (when new models will be launced, apparently). It's obviously impossible to verify such a rumor. In any event, if this is the case, perhaps we'll see the advent of a new generation ACDs. I'm looking to buy one too, to compliment my MBA. But I'm keeping my alans on until further.

Well I think the fact a new iMac is (over)due is without question. I guess the main question is will the new iMac be a complete redesign or simply a retool with the IvyBridge chipset. If it is simple a retool, I don't see much hope for any change to the ACD except maybe the addition of USB3. If it is a redesign, then it gives me more hope that something exciting is coming to the ACD.

Now that I've sold my 24" ACD, I'm getting very antsy to replace it. The business man in me says either order a refurb ACD or go down to the store to pick one up. However, the Apple fan in me says wait a few weeks.

I have a 27" thunderbolt display and I can't imagine this thing being any sharper. I would think that retina display would be overkill since these are meant to be viewed farther than a laptop/tablet. USB3 & HDMI sounds good as long as the price point stays at around $1000.
A couple of extra USB ports and an adjustable screen height would be welcomed also ;)

Thunderbolt display or imac?

I have a 15" RMBP and I'm looking to have a nice desk setup at home to hook it up to. However, if I'm going to shell out a grand, why not shell out a bit more to get a full blown desktop system that I can also use as a monitor for my RMBP.

Are there any advantages to using the Thunderbolt display vs using an iMac in target display mode? I'm assuming in Target Display mode I would not be able to use any of the ports on the iMac or the iSight camera, no?

I think we will be getting some sort of an update soon. All my local Apple stores are out of stock. So is my local Best Buy. We tried to order it, but they don't know when they will have any more stock. He said to try back in a couple of weeks, but I'm sure he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Is there anything new regarding the Cinema Display update? I'm considering to buy one... or should I wait for an update?

Apple likely prioritizes iMacs over ATD for getting the new screens. I would if I were Apple. And so Apple is heading into Thanksgiving week with no iMacs to sell or deliver so far. You can find rumors that say Apple is having problems building the new iMac screens....not surprising.....and that Apple will not be able to deliver until 2013. If so, that is will make a very embarrassing holiday shopping season for Apple...even if iPhone and iPad do well.

If by next weekend Apple has not released iMacs for sale, I would not expect new 27" ATD until Q2 2013. Personally I am not happy about that at all. I was going to purchase a pair of them for the wife and me for the holidays.

If go for the current generation, B&H has new ones for $929 and Apple as refurbed ones for $829.

My iMac HD gave up on me recently. I decided to upgrade to SSD but is still looking at new options. Silly as I am I don't feel like getting the new Mac mini yet until there is a new ACD to match it hopefully with a new design :)
