Here is a quick concept I made of a redesigned MacRumors taking design cue's from both iOS 7/8 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

Would you like MacRumors to look like this? Here is a before and after picture:

I love your concept and hope we see something like this very soon. Don't pay attention to the negative comments on this thread, if they had their way we would still all be running system 9. This forum template/theme is very outdated and looks exactly the same as when I joined 8 years ago. Its also running on a very outdated version of vBulletin but that would be very hard to change.

Apples motto under steve jobs was to produce products people didn't yet know they needed, the same goes for website design, people will be happy with the status quo until you force a fresh design on them, once then they will not ever want to go back to the old style.

^^this would never fly now a days and the same goes for this forum if it were brand new today. You can not keep living in the past, you must always move forward.

Better yet, don't pay attention to ANYTHING that disagrees with your taste.

I mean...this isn't a matter of taste, it's a matter of fact...right?

Good god, I'm so fed up with Apple at the moment the only reason I frequent this forum is because it's warm and inviting like grandma's kitchen. It may not be the 'new hotness', but it works, and it works well.

If we had an iOS7 "update", you'd have people yelling left and right how terrible it looks on non-retina screens, elitists telling them to upgrade from their Core Solo's, and a group of veteran PowerBook G4 users who get all hissy because the new graphics are too heavy for their ancient web browsers to cope with.

You don't really want that, do you? :p

It has already started, just look at the new horrible emoticons that are "designed" for retina displays :confused::apple:

you just changed blues to a lighter pastel color and put title letters in red lol red letttering with almost clear background for titles looks ok in just one post, but when the first page shows many one after the other it will look like everyhting is blended and titles will get confused.

Sorry but while I appreciate your effort, that new concept has the same main flaw as iOS 7 - it lacks clarity & definition. Better to not copy the things that Apple actually got wrong.

Please no more javascript loading.

MacRumors used to load quickly, but the last major update made everything really slow, it's like we're loading a blank page and javascript fetches everything piece by piece, especially in the right column.

I've noticed that too.

Would you like it with more leather and green felt? :p

Kill the ugly! Can't wait for the forum redesign. Any ETA?

Arn advised "hopefully eventually" so I wouldn't hold my breath on seeing anything really soon. In all likelihood we'll see incremental design updates rather than a full overhaul. But, we'll see what happens down the road.

Incremental design updates are all thats needed really. Gawker media showed how bad radical updates can be.

Just fix the 1970's forums design. There have got to be better forum skins than this.... I just came back here after a hiatus and its like warping back to something from 10 years ago.

No insult is intended, its just very very dated. For a mac forum, you could at least incorporate some elements of mac UI design. Smooth, white, crisp... and sharp. Look at discussions forums at Apple. Clean, lean and nice fonts. Take the same impetuous and craft a UI for this site.

Edit: Now I have to eat my hat. From a smartphone perspective the site is nice and clean. Its just from a normal safari browser on a mac it looks dated.

I for one wouldn't mind if all of the style over substance people got fed up and left...

Theres no reason to not have both.

Sure, I suppose that could be an outcome, but for most of the fora that I've used or read, it seems to be one or the other. Been through about a half-dozen forum "upgrades" and really haven't seen an upgrade that got both right.

Perhaps people could point out fora that have a good level of content and discourse and good, clean/modern design and we could talk about those.

You are right there. Ive never seen a good looking forum thats easy to use and most forums just look awful. I would also be interested to see any that other people like.

That being said, it doesn't mean we shouldn't try to acheive beauty and usability in one, just that it needs to be done very very carefully.

All I think it needs is updated higher resolution graphics, changing the fonts, colours and simplifying some elements. Same goes for the main website. Basically make it the same website with a 2014 facelift.

Bravo, and very well said. I actually laughed aloud reading this - very nicely expressed.

In any case, I'm one of those (and it is a matter not simply of ageing eyes, but of bespectacled eyes) who strongly favours clear, uncluttered, easily legible pages that load easily.

Another vote for this position.

It seems that change for change sake is the order of the day. The constant need for novelty is symptomatic of of a desperate need for continuous novelty.

I know I'm an old codger and my be satisfied with the status quo, but change for change sake seems unnecessary, when the current version works well, is comfortable in it's design, and serves it's users well.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" didn't put a man on the moon, did it?

;):p:D

Why is Google showing the website as Mac (space) Rumors instead of MacRumors?

Almost certainly SEO on Arn's part.

Much much better to match on "mac rumors" than "macrumors." Former is a widespread topic that people search for, the latter is a website that people don't need to search for.

I'm with Shrink on this; slightly hyperbolic, indeed.

What seems to be missing is a sense of perspective; some things work perfectly well as they are, so why change for the sake of change?

Others need to be changed, or improved - it is important to be able to distinguish which is which, and I, for one, do not necessarily see that this forum, which is easily navigable at the moment, needs to be changed, especially of it is simply for the sake of indulging a desire for novelty for the sake of novelty.

Agreed, and well said.

The problem is it isn't change for change sake, it's change because everything looks low res and has a not so palpable design. Fonts aren't so nice either, it looks messy and unorganized vbulletin 3 just isn't good for today's standards. For god sake upgrade or switch to ip.board. I know this is the standard, but it's a really bad one from a UI POV.

And changing this Forum won't put a man on the moon, either.

Slightly hyperbolic analogy...no?

Hence the smilies. Old Codger indeed!!! :D
