I wont cut down my texting plan (I'm unlimited atm).

There's just not enough people that I actually know that'll be running an iOS 5 device. I mean they have iPod's and iPad's but no iPhones. iMessage is a great feature but it will not replace SMS for me.

Anyone know if there will be a way to tell if one of your contacts has an ios5 device from your phone before you send a message? That would be great, and a nice way to gauge if you have enough friends with one to make using imessage exclusively worth it

when you start a new conversation and add a contact, it checks to see if it can iMessage, if so, it will go blue, otherwise will go green for SMS only.

Imessage will also work with ipas and ipods i believe. Google voice ftw

Use Kik. It's free and allows for cross platform messaging between Android and iPhone users. Unfortunately, Blackberry blocked Kik on their devices (no surprise there).

iMessage will probably make me send less messages, but on average I send around 10,000+ messages a month so there is no way in hell I will move from unlimited.

Oh I know, but I mean like they don't use them heavily enough to warrant iMessage. Plus the fact that they're wifi tied devices (my friends are too cheap to buy the 3G models) making it even less useful.

I don't have a texting plan right now anyway. I use email with all of my friends who have email on their phone, and when I want to text with someone I tell them to send texts directly to my email, then add the reply address to my address book. That way it's an email from my end, but comes in as a text for them.

I don't know why more people don't do this.

Come to think of it, iMessage is basically just email anyway, which we have all had on our iOS devices from day one.
This is mostly what I do as well. I don't think it will lower my sms use much, but may lower my one liner emails from iphone users with no texting plans (aka my boss).

No I won't be lowering my plan because unlimited texts also comes with unlimited mobile to any mobile minutes and I need those. Kinda genius on AT&T to tie those together, I wonder if they knew what apple was planning on.

ill keep my unlimited txt on AT&T cause u get the unlimited mobile to any mobile calling if u have the unlimited txt plan. 90% of all the number i call are mobile numbers, 6% are on my A-list and the rest dont matter cause i dont call enough to count.

Yeah I am keeping mine cause of the same thing. Unlimited Cell to Cell minutes is a nice perk.

I dont get the excitement, never had text messaging. My friends and I have been on aim, icq and msnim for years and years, use it on computers and pdas with a variety of clients long before I ever had a smart phone, why sms where you have to pay per message and can only do it on certain devices?

Currently using pidgin on the pc, but I was a long time user of trillian before it got bloated. On iphone I settled on IM+ pro.

Most people I know don't have an iPhone, and my unlimited texting plan also gives me unlimited calling to any mobile phone in the US. I'm just hoping that this new gimmick from Apple will force AT&T and other carriers to start moving toward offering reasonably priced international messaging. I currently have a service called FishText that allows me to send SMS to most countries for 2-5 cents per message, but it has a few flaws that make me wish I had something better.

Hell no I only know certain people with iPhones and iPads so na I'm good. Maybe when iMessage is universal lol

Won't cancel because then I'd lose my unlimited mobile to mobile calling. Also, I only text 3 people that have iPhones.

I had originally planned on it, but the price difference between unlimited and the next tier isn't worth losing it. Everyone I know will have io5 except for two; one of them being my boyfriend. He's a huge texter.

there was an article somewhere the other day, maybe yahoo, I don't remember- but it was talking about how texting in general is way down compared to the last few years. Probably due to the rise of BBM and similar programs. But when I read it I realized that I myself text WAY LESS than I used to. I used to send thousands of those things a month and now I hardly ever use them. I used to have whole conversations over text (while at work or an otherwise "quiet" place) and now I just send one or two that get right to the point and that's the end of it. I have an unlimited plan so I'm not being conservative with them, I just use them less.
