When you type in that *DATA# thing and it sends you a message saying how much data you've used and how much text you used, does that count as a text message if you don't have unlimited?

doubt it I send/receive like 6000 texts a month. Mostly for work I dont know how many people im texting have iphones because im usually not good friends with them so I guess if imessage cuts down my amount of texts dramatically ill consider lowering my plan.

It would be nice to save money. But my family plan with Verizon includes unlimited text. All my friends are either iPhone users or have Verizon so u would be set.

there was an article somewhere the other day, maybe yahoo, I don't remember- but it was talking about how texting in general is way down compared to the last few years. Probably due to the rise of BBM and similar programs. But when I read it I realized that I myself text WAY LESS than I used to. I used to send thousands of those things a month and now I hardly ever use them. I used to have whole conversations over text (while at work or an otherwise "quiet" place) and now I just send one or two that get right to the point and that's the end of it. I have an unlimited plan so I'm not being conservative with them, I just use them less.
What I've read has been pretty much the opposite. My understanding is that text messaging rates have generally been increasing while adults are making fewer mobile phone calls than they did in years past. At least this is according to what I've read in the recent past. I definitely recall reading a few WSJ articles on the subject, less than a year ago. I know that in the end this stuff probably doesn't really matter to most of us, I guess I was just surprised to read a comment that ran so contrary to what I've picked up on.

I've had unlimited texts for a good 3 or 4 years now, although I'd say I'm only a moderate textor. Most of those that I DO text have iPhones. I'm seriously considering cancelling my texting plan, or at least going down to a cheaper one.

With it seeming almost everyone has an iPhone these days what will you do?

EDIT: I should have titled the thread "will you lower your plan"

ours has been cancelled for awhile. we use google voice for texting=free. ported our number from AT&T so not like we have some random phone # that people text.

I don't have a texting plan right now anyway. I use email with all of my friends who have email on their phone, and when I want to text with someone I tell them to send texts directly to my email, then add the reply address to my address book. That way it's an email from my end, but comes in as a text for them.

I don't know why more people don't do this.

You might as well use pigeons.

I already have the lowest plan because I switched all my iPhone-friends over to using Textie. So I do 90% of my texting in there for free and I do the rest as normal text messages with my coworkers.

So basically iMessage will just get me to stop using Textie. That's about it.

On Fido in Canada, almost every plan seems to have unlimited texting, so I don't think I ever have to worry about it. If things were different I couldn't do it anyway. Too many people who don't have iPhones.

Right now I have unlimited text for $30, shared among 4 lines on my plan.

I think the value there of $7.50 per person for unlimited texting is reasonable enough to keep it.

I currently have the unlimited text plan with AT&T. When iOS 5 is released, I do plan on downgrading my texting plan to the 1,000/month for $10. Outside of my girlfriend (who also has an iPhone 4) I don't really text all that much. So her and I will be utilizing iMessage. Therefore, I plan on monitoring my text useage for a few months after iOS 5 drops, and if I'm not sending/receiving a lot of texts from my friends, then I will cancel my texting plan altogether.

I'm on the lowest plan right now, I dont text that much to begin with. I'll stick to what I have for now.

Barely anyone I know has an iPhone, most have BB or dumbphones, so no. Even if they had iPhones I'd probably keep my texting package as it's cheap

No. I am keeping my unlimited text plan. iMessage will just top it all off when texting iOS 5 Devices. Then again, I do not own any capable iOS 5 devices. I will later this year... :)

Not sure how you differentiate a BB from a dumbphone. :p

Blackberry is a smartphone. A dumbphone would be a regular cell phone usually with limited features compared to what a smartphone offers. This would be some Nokia, LG, etc . (I do not mean any of these manufacturers do not make smartphones, I just meant they make some regular cell phones.)

No, well here in the UK most contracts and everything come with unlimited texts anyway, no way to cancel it as well.
