Laptop replacement?

Pretty sure Apple has never touted iPad as a tablet to replace a computer.

I took delivery of my iPad Air 2 earlier today and have spent the evening pretty much glued to it!

I know this isn't a 'post your impressions' thread ha, but I just wanted to say that for me, the ram difference here is huge. The best thing of all is opening a web page that has an embedded YouTube video, pressing play and being able to open another web page without the video stopping! Oh my days it is luxury indeed haha and I'm not even being sarcastic! :p
And it was only a lyric video not a video video so I didn't need to stay on the page to watch it, FYI.

I just hope that 2gb plus is standard in the next batches of iPads as I know it's not noticeable to everyone but there's definitely a lot of people that are not a fan of it. :)

Think you're missing the point. Some people just don't want their web pages to refresh when they switch to another tab, then go back. Or have the ability to have media continue to run in a tab that is in the 'background' whilst they work on / browse another tab.

I don't think that's asking for much when you look at everything else the iPad is capable of. Unless it doesn't affect you of course, in which case that's cool.

I've just sold my iPad Air 1 and am waiting for my Air 2 to arrive tomorrow.

I only ever had like 3 tabs open at one time and the refreshing of the tabs is just crippling.
I post to forums a lot, not this one but another that I am very active on. Just opening a second tab to get the URL of an image (for example) to paste into the tab I have open with the forum stuff on, would result in a refresh. Every. Single. Time.
I couldn't care less about a normal web page refreshing, but when I've typed something on a forum, and it has refreshed because I've opened another and found an image, is a complete joke. Anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves. It's a huge problem and thankfully it has been addressed by adding more RAM to the Air 2.

I was looking to maybe go for the Mini 3 but seeing the lower ram still in there it completely put me off.
I could go for another tablet, but for me, Android is not built for tablet use and nothing comes close to the feel of an iPad, so the Air 2 is a no brainer. Looking forward to it.
Haven't you heard? Your problem doesn't exist. Other people can make a video of this NOT happening off a fresh restart, so therefor 1-Gig of RAM is enough.

Thanks for speaking up, and adding to the LONG list of people who are VERY frustrated with 1-Gig of RAM.

Not being able to retain what you type in one tab, while searching for something in another tab is acceptable for you?

My iPad 3 is still running iOS 5.1.1 and I had 2 apps running in the background and 4 tabs in Safari and one of them was a Youtube video. When I finished the video all the tabs were where I left them.

32 v 64 bit CPU, and an older OS that is less RAM hungry. Makes sense to me.

I never worry about ram! If I like the phone I buy it! And 1gb makes my phone run awesome!

Have you comprehended what other people say, because it ain't what you are suggesting ;)

Here is a video of my iPad air reloading with just two tabs and only safari running. I guess two tabs is considered a heavy tab user these days.

I will NEVER buy another iOS product with less than 2-gigs of ram again.

I swear that the people claiming they don't have this issue are either lying, or don't even know what it means to reload.

Can you please share your KBB 5 year cost to own link? The one I'm looking at isn't lengthy as yours.

Personally, I prefer 4GB minimum. 2GB was standard in 2012.

Yes I have. They claim not to have a problem, and belittle anyone who says they do. It's happened since the day the Air was released, and people have been having these problems.

Anybody who has visited here cannot say they weren't warned about how pitiful the experience can be with safari and 1-Gig of RAM in iOS - no matter how many defenders there are.

Lol you still don't get it do you. Good luck with your 2GB and you'll never have those issues ever again. Oh how wonderful it must be.

There won't be anymore iOS devices without 2GB of RAM, what's the point of this thread?

Exactly, better get ready for those "I'll never buy an iOS device unless it has 4GB threads". Man I'm old enough to remember the same threads but different subject when the first iPhone came out. They be around and will remain around as long as people don't really understand how it works.

Yes, I get it. With 2 gigs of ram, I would be able to post in one tab while researching in another tab, while ONLY the safari app running. I can't reliably do that with the air now.

So yes, I do get it. You in the other hand...

Yes, please let me how it works. Tell me how my, and many others experiences are invalid. And how my supplied video proof is also invalid. And that the ram has nothing to do with our experiences. Pretty please.

Since most apps are designed with 1 GB of RAM in mind, the ONLY app which brings down the tablet experience is Safari. 90% of the RAM issues, crashed, reloads are related to that problematic browser.

Even on my iPad Air 2, Safari still reloads tabs. But at much bigger intervals.

So the problem is a bit complex than we think involving both lack of RAM and unoptimised memory leaking Safari.

This is the only reason I am sticking to my trusty old iPhone 5 which being 32 bit, does much better than 5S or 6. I will only upgrade to 6S if it has 2 GB RAM.

How much ram do I need for 100 tabs? No refreshing? That's how many I need open at all times.

Dear count blah, perhaps you'd be so kind to actually read a variety of my posts instead of going of a tangent about something I never said. When you do you find a series of balanced posts explaining the circumstances under which a reload could be triggered and take place. And yes a low memory event could trigger the suspension or even unload of another app. However there can be many other reasons as well not least the website itself. Have a look and you'll learn that I am others aren't just simply deniers.

With kind regards,

i've got a mini 2nd gen.

i have no idea what you are talking about
and i'm happy with this tablet
i havent experienced any problems (slow, crash)

i am not going to open 55 tabs and 43 progrs to see if i need 2gb ram ( will i die if i drive my car against a wall at beast speed ? )

good luck

Forget about 100 open tabs. Can current iPhone 6 and iPad Air 1 do more than 3 tabs without refreshing them all the time?

If you really need 100 open tabs, then you need 5K Ultra 100" OLED Television and PC with server class hardware and 64 GB DDR4 RAM

Depending on the website and its session management and a hundred other factors; yes in my experience it can do that without issue.

Would you like to know how Apple judges how much RAM to put into an iOS device? When their profit margin stays above a certain level after adding that RAM into the device. That's when you'll get a RAM upgrade... and not a moment before.

It really is that simple, guys.

If you don't like it don't buy it.

I really have no sympathy or patience with these threads, if Apple doesn't produce the device you want then buy something else. It's as simple as that really.

There are endless products with bigger better specs more RAM, quad core processors, hell octa core processors, more pixels etc etc etc. If this is what you want then buy that instead and stop whinging. If your device is not what you need then sell it and buy something else.

If despite the RAM the Apple device is the best for the job then suck it up and realise that all tablet computers make some compromise and this is apples....

So in other words, don't complain, just shut up and put up with it? This is a forum on a tech website dedicated to Apple to discuss issues like just this one. You are adding nothing to this discussion. Stop blindly defending Apple. This is a real problem for many people. And no, switching to an Android tablet with 64GB RAM, octa core processors, and 21 MP pixels cameras is not an option because I am all in inside the Apple ecosystem.

Discussing?

Discussing? Sure.

Endlessly complaining about an issue that we have absolutely no power to fix? That gets really old.

Just ignore the thread if it doesn't interest you. Why even bother posting in it? It's quite simple and easy.
