I have the 4S and will likely hold onto it, unless the "new iPhone" is a significant upgrade (bearing in mind that a 4S will presumably run iOS 6).

I have a 4S now, but the second line is a dumb phone which I've had for over 3 years, so I am forced to get the 5. This was my plan anyway, was to wait for the 5, because when the 5S comes out, I can upgrade the 4S then. That way, every year, I'm due for an upgrade and get the current reiteration.

Since I got the 4S at launch, I'll probably just wait for whatever follows this coming model. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need an new iPhone every year.

All I can say is that I always upgrade every other generation. I have the 4S, then I'll have whatever they Apple comes up with, not next time, but the time after that.

As much as I am a die hearted iPhone user and Apple product loyalist for several years I am beginning to become disheartened with the restrictions placed on the users by Apple.
We the users deserve the right to have a fully unlocked phone to customize it however we feel the need to.
We deserve the right to an unlocked unit to change our service provider without the additional expense currently existing to have an unlocked unit.
I agree with the concept to make Apple products different from the masses. i just believe we should not be imprisoned by our products just for wanting a difference.:apple:
And it is with this feeling of confinement I see some of my long time Apple users going over to the Android side of life.

Apple is the new Ford: The iPhone is available in any color you want. As long as it's black or white.

RE: OPs question. If you're the type to blindly say you'll get the next iPhone when you have no idea what it will even be like, what features it will have or whether it will have a 2" screen or a 16" screen then I pity you.

After a thorough review of the specs, the additional upgrades in the 5s are not worth getting. I will just go with the Iphone 5.

Unless you really need ****** or the reviewed *****, the 5 will be just fine. And the reworked ***** is reallly not a big deal.

Why not just wait for the 6 or 7. We could wait forever for the next best thing to come out and never get a new phone.

...

I will be ordering the iPhone 5 unlocked on launch day if it is a bigger screen

Alright, I'll be that guy. First, I'll wager anything you'd like, it WILL NOT be called the iPhone 5. The iPhone 3G and 3Gs were numbered such because of the addition of 3G connectivity. The iPhone 4 was actually the 4th iPhone but the fifth version was the 4s, named as such because it basically was a speed bump or because of the addition of Siri, take your pick. Who knows what it'll be called--my personal opinion is iPhone LTE to emphasize the key new addition to the iPhone.

And to answer the OP's question...yeah, as much as I don't need it, I've had every version and will definitely be getting the next one.

i know the s stood for speed in the 3gs, but i don't think it really means anything in the 4s, kind of like how the i stood for internet in imac but doesn't really have meaning now other than to say it's an apple product.

Is this something that Apple came out and said? I did not know this, but always wondered why the i became so popular.

...Will you wait for the "5S" or will you pay the extra money and get the 5?...

How can ANYONE answer this question since you have no idea of the following:

features in the "5"
features in the "5s"
cost of either - will there even be a cost
if either will even be released

This is a foolish question.

I will be buying the iPhone 5 for full price, then selling my 4S on ebay for $350 or more hopefully. When the next one comes out 5S or 6, then I will get that with a contract and sell the 5 on ebay. It will cost me $300 for the 5 and nothing for the 5S/6.

I just did. I'm pretty sure the 5 will be novel enough for me to want to upgrade. If not then it's not like I'm legally obliged to follow through on a forum post.

Sorry but you and those that go on about what the phone will be called need to get a life or something.

Why do you care what it's called? When OP said 5/5s you knew what they were talking about based on your response. Why go into what it might be called?

These "why do you care" comments always baffle me. People care because they care. Get a life? Aren't we all doing the same thing here? (browsing an Apple fan site and talking about various things).

Base it on previous upgrade history.
