today i was watching williams vs henin, and the umpire tells the crowd to be quiet yet serina was screaming when she was hitting the ball surely that is just as off putting as the crowd talking or clapping

i think that screaming or making pointless noises should be ban with in the game, what do you think?

but is must be so off putting to the other player, i mean it could be tactics  but Nadal and S Williams both have tallent and skill so i dunno

I hear you. It's like when I'm at the movies, and I get a call on my cell phone -- the sound from the theater speakers can make it really difficult to carry on a conversation. Luckily, if you just talk really loudly you can sort-of drown out the noise. Also works in other noisy places like restaurants, or hospital waiting rooms.

I saw the highlights of S. Williams vs. the russian woman (sorry i don't know her name  ) it looked like they were both playing at half speed. IMO Williams should have forfeited, she looked seriously injured. But, on the other hand, her opponent seemed a bit slow as well

justine henin. and she's not russian, she's from belgium.

I can't stand the grunts.

I watched the V. Williams vs Sharapova match today (well, the second set), and ball after ball they were both screaming and grunting. It's really irritating for the spectators to listen to, and it's not necessary. Does Federer grunt?

as far as i know Federer dosent grunt or make stupid noices, but sometimes Nadal does

but there annoying to watch, it annoys me that the umpire tells the crowd to be quiet but the players can make annoying grunts

Im upset my girl Sharapova lost today.:(

i know tough break i wanted her to go through i dont like the Williams sisters to much

Me too....there goes the eye-candy! :(

But aye...the noises are quite mad nowadays. When Sharapova was playing Williams....at one point I thought she was about to get off! ;)

Glad Serena went out....she's claiming injury...but she was playing it up to suit her needs. Henin could take her any day of the week!

yeah, i don't like them at all really.

Anyways, I'm pulling for Federer, I don't like Nadal for some reason

why? i don't like Federer, mainly b/c too many people like him. make him out to be sooooo great. and here comes a young pup and beats him more than he loses to him. i love it.......now if only Roddick can beat him (Roddick hasn't dropped a set this tournament )

With Sharapova it's every hit. That's the problem. I think they should introduce a new rule, applicable to anyone who enters the competition say 5 years from now (to give the juniors time to adjust), whereby excessive grunting is penalized as disturbing the opponent's play. Don't know if that's workable or not.

I tend to agree. Grunts and squeaks have always bugged me. Monica Seles was one of the worst.
