This is the update we’ve been waiting for since 2015. I think they’re finally comfortable doing it since their long term focus is on the Vision Pro, with Mac no longer being the centerpiece. This is great.

This looks great, I’m actually cautiously optimistic. It looks like the key functionalities are there, and pretty elegantly integrated into the iPadOS experience. The new pointer is a welcome change, the old circle felt so imprecise and clunky. The way you can open any number of overlapping windows, then swipe them all away to start with a blank slate anytime, seems good and not overcomplicated like Stage Manager. Can’t wait to try this out.

So is this like a more advanced like version of the current Stage Manager?

Funny, was wondering if they were going to refer to it as stage manager improvement. But just seemed like they generalized it as improved 'multitasking'

Why couldn’t a lesser version come to iOS? Allow iOS split screen and preview? Or is this being gatekept for the iPhone fold?

It's not so much a "finally" as it has been possible all along. It is more Apple pulling its head out of their "philosophy"
But this is such great news for iPad, specifically the iPad Pro. What were they even thinking with that blob pointer and "Stage Manager"? Just terrible ideas to avoid implementing a true pointer and Windows.

This points towards them toning down their tone deaf "philosophy" and bringing touch to the Mac.

Overall, great news.

Yes. And that's why people who want "this stuff" should just buy a Mac instead of shouting/whining to transform iPad into a Mac.
Can’t get a Mac w 5g to start which I use very regularly for $10 a month unlimited without using up my phone’s battery, and iPad Pro has the flexibility of touch, it’s 2 in 1 nature, including signing documents, and just a much better screen. Plus iPad interface is still more futuristic than a Mac imo for those who don’t need legacy Mac apps necessarily. I feel there is a large audience for this sort of update on the iPad.

I’ve been using multi-tasking and the files app more and more. This will be a huge step up. Kudos to Apple. Being able to put a folder in the dock is great. It seems like Steve did not envision iPad this way. From the introduction I guess he saw it as more for reading or other content consumption. Maybe some of that was due to the power of the processor at the time. The new M4 iPad is vastly more capable than the original.

Dude NOBODY has wanted that. We who want MacOS on iPad have been very adamant that the usual interface with iPad should also remain. We literally just want to ALSO use MacOS on iPad. We want you to have your preferred experience and we want our preferred experience.

And really, most of it is that we want to be able to use it as a Mac when we want to and use it as an iPad at other times.

We literally are asking for just another option that will not affect you. For example, a switch that turns off MacOS from ever showing up on your iPad so that you can use it as a regular iPad.

Quite often we are people who would rather not buy a Mac AND an iPad, but have one device that does everything for us (i.e. Mac stuff AND iPad stuff). Literally the best thing that could happen for a consumer.

Us who defended the desktop metaphor all these years were considered "old fashioned", "nostalgic" "reluctant to change" and bunch of other things. Who's laughing now?
You were pushing for macOS on iPads. This isn’t it. This is taking some design elements from macOS and adding them as optional to iPad. Some design elements have also migrated from iPadOS to macOS.
