New Windows Recall feature tracks and stores every single keystroke, including passwords and private browsing, and uploads it to a “perfectly safe” AI for processing. And it cannot be uninstalled.

This is the only reason anybody should need for using a Mac.

Looks like Recall has been cracked again

For me, I've largely moved off of windows for my home systems, my PC is now running Linux, and I also have a Studio

This video is a freaking mess. Most of it is outdated and unnecessary. Windows has enough problems without making up or exaggerating them. Copilot is all but dead. It only works on ARM processors and is off by default now. Etc., etc.,

That said, the privacy stuff is definitely opt-outable and everyone NEEDS to do that who uses windows!

There is no opting out of anything privacy-related regarding Microsoft. Browsergate showed that to the world.

I am actually sad to see MS Windows in such a state. In the one hand except for bad updates the OS is very stable and when you turn all the ads off and install Win Pro things are a little better.

Like some others have said anyone who has used Windows knows to tweak settings to get the best out of it.

I have a older M2 MBA and two Windows laptops, one a Samsung Galaxybook 4pro x360 and the Windows laptops will spin up fans just turning the laptop on. It will settle down then just say streaming a video and after 30 minutes those fans start blasting. I checked task manager, and my browser is using like 600mb ram. Cpu is barely working and yet my fans are running.

My M2 MBA obviously doesn't have fans but I have never had it slow down or get bogged down by something like streaming a video.

Over time having to deal with some mystery CPU hog that doesn't show up on task manager? I can have my Windows laptop just idling and it will run the fans?? I have re installed, de bloated, turned off any snooping settings and still. I have a Core Ultra 150 plus 16gb ram on a 1 TB drive. It gets really old. I like to use my Galaxy book for streaming as it has a 16" screen but because the processor seems to struggle with simple tasks even though it is supposed to be a high performance processor?

My old Mac feels a bit slower to boot up and some tasks seem a little bit longer to do than when my MacBook was new BUT it is only noticeable if you pay attention and doesn't ever get in the way of what I am doing or how. I am actually very impressed with how well my MacBook without fans has performed over the years as I got mine close after release. I haven't been as satisfied with a laptop in many years.

While my Windows system still works fine but Windows has become less efficient to use since Win 11, now we have more advertising in the OS than ever, more restrictive setup than ever, less focus on improving user experience and more on eye candy, better security with less privacy. Now with recall and Co Pilot BS and no real direction by MS that instills any confidence going forward. I feel like another Windows phone moment where MS is just making bad decent that hurt itself in the long run for short term gains.

I grew up on MS DoS and Windows 95 through Win 11 and used every iteration since including the awful Windows Millennium edition. Look that one up. So I have seen the good and the bad but Windows always had freedom of choice being part of its success on the hardware side and software side. Since hardware is more and more being soldered to the CPU there is less hardware repairs you can make or upgrades. Having catalogs of software that you used to buy and use for as long as possible is gone. Legacy software is a niche requirement at this point. I don't use desktop systems where MS Windows would have an advantage.

All of the advantages that Windows used to have has eroded away except for gaming which is not important to me. One of the other advantages used to be Linux. Linux has always been a pain on mobile hardware but Intel had open source drivers and no worries but OEM's started messing with stuff and making it very hard to install Linux on a Windows laptop say from Lenovo. I am sure a Linux person here could have done but I have been using Linux since Mepis Linux when you could barely even configure x for your screen or get wifi working but you shouldn't have any issues today.

Long rant to say that Windows has become a data extraction tool and serves the business model and not the end user. They have repeatedly chosen to prioritize superficial changes rather than substantial and use there customers as profit centers rather than serving their needs.

All of the worst of the last decade at leadt has been because of the switch from paid Windows software to free. Once they went to rolling releases and stopped charging for new versions of Windows the software quality dropped off and has never recovered. I have a lot of nostalgia tied to MS Windows and I like having choices beside just one desktop OS so I want Windows to succeed.

However at this point unless they change their business back to charging for Windows and putting the priority back on the customer and their satisfaction instead of promoting useless features no one wants so you can extract more personal data from customers.

I am not a fan of Apple in the sense they tried to put a backdoor into MacOS in the guise of CSAM scanning. I hate anyone who hurts children. Period. But I don't want a backdoor into my OS because of other people's actions. Luckily Apple got rid of it and hasn't tried it again but it left a bad taste in my mouth and recall is making me throw up.

So for now I will use my fan spinning Windows laptop for streaming but my next new laptop is 99% going to be a MacBook.

I won't sell off all of my Windows laptops but I don't see myself replacing one and I will sell the other. Time will tell.

It is very unfortunate to see MS Windows become worse than Google.

Truth be told, I think the bones are good. The windows 11 foundation is windows 10, so I think we're in decent shape, provided MS actually changes course with AI, improves the rollout of updates and moves towards an approach that adds features to the OS, instead of ways to force people to onedrive and their other online services.

Over time having to deal with some mystery CPU hog that doesn't show up on task manager?
I deal with that on a daily basis with my work laptop. The fans are blasting, the cpu is at 90% randomly but nothing is really consuming the cycles.

One of the other advantages used to be Linux. Linux has always been a pain on mobile hardware but Intel had open source drivers and no worries but OEM's started messing with stuff and making it very hard to install Linux on a Windows laptop say from Lenovo
I think the state of Linux improved quite a bit, and if you consider a laptop from System 76 or other manufactors who have linux as the default you'll be in better shape. I also think chipset selection matters a lot. I have T14s thinkpad (with an AMD cpu/gpu) and having Linux on that was simple, and there wasn't any major hiccups. I think using nvidia gpus is probably the single most point of frustration with Linux users, but with that said, I beleive nvidia has released new drivers for linux so that frustration may be diminishing.

Overall, I have cachyos on my desktop (amd cpu/gpu) and my experience has been overly positive. I can't see myself installing windows back onto that pc, but never say never.

Interesting. I think part of that is the notoriously bad CPU/heat situation we had about a decade ago (about the time Apple was starting to get fed up with Intel as well).

I have none of these issues. I have a high-end i9-275HX Lenovo Legion 16" with a high end GPU. I never hear the fans unless I am gaming or doing something serious. I leave it in "balanced" mode and everything is fine.

I also have a Surface Pro 9 with the i5 and 8GB of RAM. Again, never hear the fans unless I am gaming (rare on that thing) or it is doing something serious as well.

Now my Dell 14" corpo laptop, I will hear the fans on that bad boy. But it's a mid laptop from a few years ago.

Additionally, I remember always paying for Windows. Time was we had to pay for MacOS upgrades as well. Windows XP Pro was seriously like $199 upgrade price. It wasn't cheap.

And the CSAM issue is interesting in that Apple went the other way and MS didn't. There is a reason I don't use Onedrive. It isn't even the CSAM, it's the lack of end-to-end encryption.

Also, to the repairs thing. Look up the Thinkpad T-14. It got a perfect score on the reparability side. Everything is literally replaceable. https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/lenovo/lenovo-thinkpad-t14-t16-ifixit-repair-perfect-score

Copilot is being somewhat phased out and a return to basics is supposedly on the table. https://www.howtogeek.com/every-windows-11-user-uninstall-copilot-even-managed-devices/

So, I think the Windows situation is getting better and has the potential to improve further. I want to see what MacOS 27 brings, but it has to be better than 26. If they do the smart thing and pull a "Snow Leopard" year, then I can see it. Otherwise, ensh******tion doth come for us all.

I have a Lunar Lake Yoga and I never hear the fans. It runs cool and quiet. I think that Core Ultra 2 has come through for Intel and I really would like to test Core Ultra 3 without the intention of buying one of course. Maybe I can test one at Best Buy or Costco when they show up.

The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Panther Lake is ultra-repairable too. Ports are not soldered onto the motherboard. They are replaceable. You can take off the top case in two seconds - no screws or bolts. There are YouTube videos on replacing the parts in the laptop.

Not true about what machines can use it.With a few tweaks at install can be installed on most machines .I have it installed on an old 2012 Mac book pro no probs .Gets updates as normal .

The fans are tuned by the PC manufacturer. My dell does not spin the fans even on performance mode unless I am video editing. Everything else, productivity work, photo editing, watching videos etc the fans are at their lowest RPM or off. I do not hear them. There have been times when I had to put my ear to the vent to see if anything was happening.

My son's MSI Cyborg gaming laptop got them screaming all the time. But it's for gaming, not quiet use. His even has a turbo setting key so he can hit the key (fn UP) I think, and they will ramp to MAX and it's a jet engine.

As for windows 11, once you turn off the ad bs, and fix privacy settings in the OS, it's fine. Recall can be completely disabled on your pc. So that's a non issue. If it's disabled it's not collecting anything.

See this is why I always end up back on Apple stuff. Crap like this. Like why?
Because that's all Satya knows now. He's a one trick pony. First it was business facebook and nothing else, then it was cloud cloud cloud and nothing else, now it's AI SLOP and nothing else. There is a pattern. Thankfully I am 85% out of that pattern now.

Microslop is alive and well. They claimed they are removing Co-Pilot from many of the microsoft software around windows. The test results are in and that's a lie. They just removed the Co-pilot brand and replaced it with another ai button.

I knew it was too good to be true.....And it was. Therefore Zorin gets my vote and I will be fine doing everything we need on it.

I'll be honest. I didn't even know Windows had a formal Clock app. I don't have any real opinion on the app getting an AI makeover. Mostly cause I don't use the app, lol. I guess I would be more annoyed if they added AI to powershell (terminal now) or task manager since I use those a lot.

This is encouraging.

Microsoft admits Windows 11 lost its way, Nadella pledges to "win back fans"
TL;DR: Microsoft is trying to repair Windows 11's reputation and overhaul its app ecosystem, and both efforts center on one idea: get back to fundamentals and make the OS feel like a fast, coherent, native-first platform again. That shift runs from Satya Nadella's pledge to "win back fans" to internal engineers publicly declaring that "Native apps are back!" for Windows 11.

Yes,

As I mentioned previously. Losing half a billion dollars in market cap in basically one day will do that to you. Satya is on a very very short leash now and the stakeholders/board of directors has told him to right the ship or else. One more screw up and he's gone. He is such a "hyperfocused personality" that he can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Not good ceo material.

So they have K2, a project where insiders, fans, users etc can give their concerns and problems and microsoft will actually listen and take action if need be.

They are also reversing alot in xBox gaming too. Nadella made many dumb choices there as well.

Safety or vision. Most CEOs are safe. They don't take big risks, they cut costs in salary, quality of the product, and are the reason most corporate owned former small businesses suck with products that are a shell of the original.

CEOs maximize profits but many times by shooting the company in the foot but short term is all they care about. Once they sink the ship they are out.

Then you have the special few CEOs with a vision that is inspirational and increase profits by boosting sales and improving the product. They take big risks and fail but when they succeed, they succeed big.

MS needs a gutsy and smart CEO. Not gutsy and stupid like Balmer or gutless and intelligent like Nadia.

Steve Balmer, Nadia, etc. These people have run MS into the ground from it's peak glory. They play safe and take small risks that never pay off. Some of those small risks turn out to be a bigger drain on resources than expected and smaller companies go under.

MS needs a leader with a customer oriented vision of the future of MS and Windows. Stop trying to make MS Google and make the customer the focus not the product. It would be a good idea to end rolling releases and start charging for Windows releases and by charging for new releases people will expect more. If MS made Windows more private and even more secure and much more efficient using less resources with better performance and focus on efficiency for the customer in GUI interactions.

They need to ditch x86 and move on. So many things MS could do that would make Windows fun again. As it is now I feel like I am on Android using a bad skin from a non trustworthy OEM.

I have used Windows since before it was Windows. It has never been perfect but there have been times where it was pretty great. In some ways a lot of old pain points have gone away but the user experience has degraded so much that it doesn't matter the fundamental improvements made over the years.

Nadella does not "play it safe" he's a hyperfocused dufus. He latches on to the new "thing". This in itself is fine, as Microsoft were the first to the show with many things. But then he either gets bored, or he expects 100 percent profit margins in 3 months. If not it's axed. He's made MS lots of money because of asure and cloud services, but now he's pissing that all away with spending billions in Ai that is another fad.

Hololens was remarkable compared to any of the other headsets. It was true pass through technology as it was a clear lens you could look through but had displays in the clear lenses. Unlike all others which is simulated pass through. It never made money and they squandered the project by not releasing a consumer version. Just one example of many. He needs to be replaced ASAP. Panos would be awesome, someone with great consumer / corporate focus and stop messing with garbage stuff like Ai.

Panos got snapped up by Amazon. I thought he did a good job with the Surface stuff.
