The Vista beta was limited to 2m downloads if I remember correctly, took about a month before they closed it.

Outside of the techies of the world not to many people are all that excited about a beta version of an OS...

The mp3 patch is there because Windows 7 uses the H.264 AVC mpeg-4 standard now.

Ya I know what you mean. It's only interesting because it appears Windows is getting with the times and using H.264 now. Which is a good thing.:)

From what I hear WMP (12? Whatever newer version is in Windows 7) can handle pretty much any codec (save Quicktime and Real). No more need for VLC or Media Player Classic!

I put in a Blu-ray and it recognised it and attempted to play it. I'm running in VMware which likely lacks the required acceleration etc but it was still interesting. Will try an HD DVD on real hardware later (no BR drive in my other machine).

It won't play things in .mkv containers and it will not play apple lossless audio formats.. but it plays pretty much everything else I've tossed into it.

Here are some of my favorite things about Wmp 12 and Windows 7

Libraries and homegroup integration... the libraries on my other networked windows 7 machines show up on the left automatically and I can create playlists of content that resides on different machines.

If I dump a new avi file or some such into any of the folders I've included in my videos library on my desktop, my alu macbook's wmp window automatically updates to reflect the change in a couple seconds.

I also like that I can send media to be played on different networked devices.. if I'm in another room with my notebook and want to play something out of the stereo in the living room from my pc, I can use my notebook as a remote to control what plays on my desktop. I can send a whole playlist, mixed with music, video and photos to any other machine on my network that has wmp open and has been allowed to receive media.

With the talk of "smart" tvs that do more in the future.. if a television could work as an extender or a networked media device that could receive media from any of my computers, that would be incredibly sweet.

I actually really like Windows 7 (beta 1) so far.

Surprisingly stable, peformance is vastly improved on Vista, and running even on my atom netbook its speedy, responsive and very easy to use.

Aero works a charm, I like the new taskbar and icon display / information.

So far so good, and this is only BETA 1 ? God I hope they don't balls this up like they did vista....

From what I've heard, the Vista beta worked nothing like this. Far worse in fact. So this is a pretty good sign.

Here is what I did.

Fresh bootcamp install of build 7000 on Blackbook 2.4
-install took about 20 minutes.
-all bootcamp 2.1 drivers working except audio.
-dl Realtek driver vista_213.exe and voila.
-no issues

Upgrade option on MBP SR 2.4 from Vista SP1 bootcamp.
-upgrade took one hour.
-all programs/games (including GTA IV) transferred and working except daemon tools.
-all bootcamp 2.1 drivers working/no issues

VMware Fusion
- forced to uninstall and then reinstalled VMware Fusion 2.0.1 inorder to update my bootcamp partition virtual config. Set Windows 7 in VMware with Windows Server 2008 configuration with no problems and all VMware drivers working. Very snappy compared to Vista in VMware Fusion. Unity working well!

In both instances the install/upgrade was simple and relatively painless. I already enjoy Windows 7 over Vista SP1 in terms of speed and performance. Despite some discussion and debate on the efficacy of the new taskbar, I like it, somewhat copying the ideas from Mac OS. The OS looks clean and refined. Me thinks Microsoft is heading in the right direction with this one.

For GTA IV fans...

I only briefly tested GTA IV after the upgrade with the default bootcamp 167.XX drivers and surprisingly the game actually runs with no texture loss, poor fps, but runs. Not the case under Vista. I have not yet tried the 180.84 DOX Optimized drivers as of yet.:D

I am enjoying Win7 Beta myself. Running it in VMWare Fusion on BootCamp partition and it runs without much issue (when I do, it can be associated to the VM).

One bug I found though: Whenever I (and a co-worker) run MineSweeper, the system hangs. You can move the mouse pointer around, but the system doesn't respond to anything. I am going to try it out while in BootCamp. Funny problem if you ask me. Anyone else find this "bug"?

@SolRayz and other VMWare Fusion users: You don't need to uninstall Fusion to get it to recognize your new BootCamp Partition. You just need to delete the config file for it. Point Finder to <user>->Library->Application Support-> VMWare Fusion->Virtual Machines->Boot Camp. Delete the contents of the folder, then launch Fusion. When you try to start the Boot Camp VM, it should reconfigure it for your "new" Boot Camp partition

I installed win 7 on my bootcamp partition on my 1st gen macbook - fresh install. Via bootcamp works fine. Then tried using it with vmware fusion - but neither the wireless card or the ethernet port are being recognises - well in the ethernet case it's appears as an invalid driver. Any one else having these problems or found a solution.

Just downloaded Windows 7 beta last night and installed. Everything seems to be working much better than it ever did in Vista. Everything seems smoother and faster. I already submitted a couple of bugs I've found but nothing major. I really like the new task bar, but the libraries are taking me some time to get used to.

I was also a tester for Vista, and God what a difference. Not even RC1 was close to Windows 7 beta, and this is only beta 1 (only beta?). If they continue like this I'm sure they could release it by June or July.

Good to know for future reference. I never understood why VMware disables the delete function from the gui for bootcamp partitions?

Guys, anyone installed windows 7 64-bit on unibody alu macbook and got everything to work?

Anyone managed to get the Apple-developed Boot Camp drivers specifically the function keys to work?

By the way, I love how Apple artificially stops the Boot Camp setup from running if Windows Vista or XP is not detected.

Isn't there a command to have the drivers extracted?

It would be nice to be able to control sound through the function keys.

....... What are you talking about? My BootCamp drivers installed without a problem with Build 7000. Win7 is viewed as Vista by most apps, so even if Apple did "artificially stop(s) the Boot Camp setup from running if Windows Vista or XP is not detected", it wouldn't be tripped by Win7.

Windows 7 has a new Marvel/Yukon driver for the ethernet. Do an update.

i'm am REALLY tempted to update my xp partition to windows 7. i only use xp for gaming, so i was wondering if windows 7 will cause a decrease in framerates in the games i play, since vista does and 7 is supposedly more or less like vista. or it's supposed to be vice versa since 7 is faster than xp and vista? what should i do?

btw, i have a early 08 macbook pro, 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram, 256mb 8600m gt. i use it to play cod4, l4d, spore, and other source games.

The early benchmarks I've seen online have indicated that Win7 is faster than XP in gaming and virtually every other department and uses fewer resources.. For lack of a better comparison, its much like a windows version of Snow Leopard

Windows 7 uses DirectX11, so some older games won't work.

Might be a bit of a thick question, but can anyone tell me how to get the file onto a DVD having downloaded the .iso file?

I'm using Toast, and just need to know what sort of file it needs to be burned as in order to get the computer to pick it up as an installation disc.

Cheers.
