I installed windows 7 on bootcamp, then later bought parallels 5 and used my bootcamp virtual on par 5 and I couldn't register it again online but had to register it by phone for it to work in virtual. Now both copies work even though I rarely boot into bootcamp windows 7 since par 5 works so good.

You have to call to get the second activation, its no problem many people have done w/o any issues.
Other people might indeed have gotten an activation code with no issues, but that's no guarantee that everybody will.

I'd say that if you not very familiar in or very comfortable with Windows, then by all means don't get an OEM version.

Since maflynn's comment was in response to a retail version install, I'd say it is pretty well assured that the second activation will work.

I agree with your second point though. If you don't understand the limitations on what you are buying stay far away from OEM.

Delete Bootcamp Partition, Run Parallels 6? Is it possible using same Win7 OEM Disc?

Hey I was wondering if I could get some feedback on this before I actually try it. I bought Win7 OEM and installed in bootcamp fine, but I really don't need it in a whole bootcamp partition since i'll only be using windows for matlab and solidworks and stuff, so I wanted to see if it's possible to delete my bootcamp partition, then run parallels using that same Win7 OEM disc with the same serial number. Technically, it will still be on the same computer, and will no longer be used in bootcamp, so will it work? Has anyone tried deleting bootcamp then using parallels with the same OEM Win7 disc? I just dont want to delete my bootcamp partition, then purchase parallels only to find that my OEM Win7 disc can no longer be used. Thanks.

In theory it should work but I'd say just leave the BC partition there unless you really want to recover that space.

I realize JDDrummer posted this almost a month ago so it may no longer be an issue.

You may also be well served by using Parallels' import Boot Camp tools, they may help smooth over the activation issues better than installing from scratch.

Thought I'd post this here rather than starting a new thread for it but I was having activation issues (randomly started happening for no reason) on my MBA 11" with Windows 7 on both Boot Camp partition and in Parallels. I also realised this happened roughly when I did the automatic update for Parallels Desktop 6. The activation/not a genuine copy message kept popping up in virtualisation, and then in Boot Camp. I activated it first in Parallels (mistake I know), and then when I booted Boot Camp, it popped up the same problem.

I found this article ( http://kb.parallels.com/4672 ) which is a bit old but it explains some of the ways you can resolve issues between Parallels and Boot Camp with regards to activation. I tried the trick regarding the MAC address but since I have Parallels Desktop 6, the MAC address is already inputted and I wrote this down. Then I booted up Windows 7 in Boot Camp and popped it into the wireless adaptor MAC address (remember the MBA has no ethernet port! I was worried that Windows 7 would pick up on this variance but it didn't). I activated in Boot Camp using the online activation and it worked. Next time I ran Parallels it asked me to install the updated Parallels Tools so I did. And now it's all good- both seem to be fully activated with no issues, and I didn't have to do that telephone activation thing since it always worked from the application. Note I have Home Premium OEM.

any advice? please?

ok, hopefully posting here is the better of ideas over starting a new thread...

i'm currently trying to install Parallels 7, with a OEM version of Windows XP that came with a license key and a note that swore it "is a complete install version which will install fully, without limitation and on PC's and MAC's," on my macbook pro from Mid 2010, 2.66 ghz i7, 4 gb of ram DDR3, and a SSD drive, in order to install OneNote 2007 which is also OEM but from a different online retailer, and, i'm not having much success. i can't get my mac after i did successfully install and ran the necessary updates to Parallels to recognize the copy of Windows XP i have

is there any advice, help, smoke signals, as to whether or not there's any way to get all this to work with what i have to work with? any help, smoke signal or otherwise would be greatly appreciated

also i purchased these versions of XP, OneNote, and even Parallels (it was a Groupon deal that spurred me to finally try this) because i unfortunately or fortunately don't make as much money as i would like nor as my student loan provider would like me to

bests,
eric
