Didn't read the whole post, but not doubting that Big Sur is a train-wreck. On my (personal) productive environment I am currently on Mojave (which by no way is as good as SL, but ok). Once in a while I boot into BS (Big Sur) which I have installed on an external SSD for testing purposes, only to find out it still doesn't do anything better but most of the things worse, is bloated and slow.
Machine is a 13" 2017 MBP - which I am also not updating, because honesty I found all later iterations of macOS not very tempting and mostly you can't downgrade on newer machines.

Any new OS will require a learning curve, and Windows is very inconsistent with some of the UX elements.
I work at IT Support and many of my coworkers hate macOS and the reason is that they actually know nothing about macOS and have never used it and just hate on it so much.
I remember one of my coworkers was trying to use "ipconfig/flushdns" somehow and it didn't work. First he had troubles finding the terminal and he was really angry and commented like: "What kind of retards use a Mac?" etc. I constantly hear such things at work and on this forum it's mostly the opposite.

All operating systems are usable and great. You can throw Ubuntu or Mac or Windows at me and I can easily use all of them as my daily operating systems, because I've learned all of them.
I wish people would be more willing to learn new things and were as open minded as you.

What's crappy with MacOS is that apple decides when apps stop working, not the dev. It would be awesome to stay on a certain version of iOS and drive off into the sunset, but after a couple of years, NOTHING works and then again, it's apple forcing you to do something instead of someone deciding when to update. I can take a full version of windows 7 and load most everything onto it and it works fine. I could not say the same for my macbook 2007 model which was basically a brick since even safari would not run correctly anymore. Now my 2007 acer is running windows 10 20H2 and it runs fine.

I did the Big Sur VM thing last night (I check it out every couple of months) and it's still a pig - the window animations are a particular problem in killing performance for me. It runs fine on an M1 Air that we have but it's not mine. So I'm back to using Mojave.

It's funny how the tables have turned in the OS world. MacOS used to be light, "flicky" and fast and Windows the bloated one. Now it's reverse. My little dell laptop screams on windows 10, no lag, stutters, or waiting. Just smooth, fluid and fast. My xps 8940 workstation is an everything is instant machine now. I wait for nothing. I have gigabit fibe internet and this xps is just instant to use.

I have a suspicion that Microsoft optimizes Windows for processor generations. So you install Windows 10 but there are some background processes that modify code components of the operating system to run best for your CPU. Microsoft certainly has the customer base size to make it worthwhile to do this. My 2008 Dell XPS Studio still runs Windows 10 just fine and makes the most of the hardware.

I suspect that Apple Silicon is just so fast and efficient that it will allow Apple to be a bit sloppy in the software. I think that having common Apps between iOS and macOS may also be a source of bugs or performance issues.

I am quite pleased to run a macOS Mojave Virtual Machine on Windows 10 for now. We'll eventually see what the next Apple Silicon models will look like. I still prefer the macOS GUI but it's possible that newer versions of macOS will leave Intel MacBooks and maybe even slower iMacs in the dust.

I have a Linux-Dell? I have an extra 256 GB NVe ssd drive that i would like to install Ubuntu or better on for graphic design and web development. Can anyone recommend a stable system and a good refence to install the version.
I have reinstalled OSX many times and run Mojave on my unsupportive MacBook air and reinstalled windows10 20H2 last week because i found great "How to" sources available online.
thanks in advance!

What about linux mint? I ran that on my 2007 macbook and it ran really good on it. Also elementary OS works great too.

I am ok with that. All software I have on my 2018 dell inspiron works on my 2007 acer 7720. I don't care whats going on in the background to make it quick and fluid.

You could try Pop!_OS. Very clean and nice distro.

I have tried Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Mate, Ubuntu-Mate with Cinnamon on top, Pop_OS, Elementary OS, Linux Mint Mate, Linux Mint Cinnamon and lots others that I would like to forget about.
For me, I prefer Ubuntu-Mate. I find that it is (by a small margin) fastest of all the OSs I have listed above. You also have full access to the full Ubuntu and Debian software suites. Close second would be Linux Mint Cinnamon and Elementary OS. They are different, but I like them equally.

Here is the link to their documentation about installing Ubuntu, but it is the same for Ubuntu-Mate.
Here are the links to Ubuntu-Mate and the downloads

thank you, Dave
I used Mint while freelancing on a dell xsp in 2018 while building a search query for a medical corporation and enjoyed the simplicity of the platform.
there are too many variations of linux i forget about too!

I also noticed that Windows 10 works much better and quicker than.... well OSX Mojave on wireless printers, wireless speakers and internet sharing.

Jeez, watching MacOS loyalists and Windows loyalists discuss the pros and cons of each operating system is like watching republicans and democrats try and work things out in American politics. People in this post are flinging poo at one another, telling each other to grow up, and calling the other side liars. This is quite the cage match!

Personally, I love both of my dear, sweet OS children. My sweet macOS and my sweet windows10. ❤️❤️❤️

Let’s find the peace and love in this post and collectively pray to God together that the 2021 Macs don’t come with soldered on SSDs.

I can already say that no prayer in the world will help you there. All mobile macs will come with soldered on SSD and RAM. Path is already set, and there is no change in the future.

I don't mind this as much on mobile devices if I can get a heavy compute system in a desktop and remote access it.

I think that we all should be fussing about the soldered on SSD instead of having a GUI cage match with windows10.

I love macOS, but soldered on storage and total lack of data recovery options if a board fails is kind of scary.

Accept it on everything mobile, not just macOS but everyone is following this path. For the most part, consumers want thin and light devices and soldering on everything makes that a whole lot easier.

What I am waiting to see and more of an issue is the new iMacs, I have a suspicion they are all going to have soldered ram.

You know they are. Apple don't want people saving money and doing upgrades themselves when they charge ridiculous amounts for minimal ram upgrades.

Omg ! Back to the cage match!

the new Microsoft surface tablet is as thin and light and powerful as they come! Also convertible tablet / laptop.
AND IT COMES WITH A USER UPGRADBLE ~ REMOVABLE SSD!!!!

What kind of knowledgeable consumer actually wants a soldered on SSD on their laptop?
I’m flabbergasted...

No offense, man, but you are like an apple consumer with Stockholm syndrome. They‘ve taken away your upgradable parts and removed your data recovery options, and you are sympathizing with your captors! There are plenty of thin light devices with upgradable parts! 😳

I thought this would happen at least last year, before the M1 announcement. There was a credible rumour they would be adopting a design language similar to the iPad Pro and I mentioned that would be the end of upgradable RAM. But that's actually been a reality on the 21.5 inch model for awhile now anyway but it will be a blow to the larger models.

Look at the leaks of the supposed design. There is no way that isn't going to be anything other than a completely sealed unit.

Soldered ram = acceptable

soldered on SSD with little to no data recovery options if your board fails = scary?!?!

This is not a theoretical conversation. Mac users—who were also responsibly making back ups—have had board failures with recent apple laptops and written at great length about the fact that they lost important data, because data recovery on a failed board with a soldered on SSD is impossible with the recent Mac laptops.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

while this sucks, of course, and gets terribly pricey once the warranty ran out, there is no excuse for not having backups in 2021. Especially on Macs.

Indeed, I suspect the justification will be that the general consumer is the target for iMac and they care less for upgradeable parts. If you want that buy the planned Mac Pro Mini.
