Can't wait for them to add the same stores on the XBOX. Oh they won't be doing it on there? weird.

I wouldn't be so sure they won't. Microsoft made this move knowing people would immediately ask about the Xbox.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't the Xbox play games that are purchased from Walmart, GameStop, Target, Best Buy, etc...?

What's the difference between permitting software to be purchased physically from third party stores vs permitting software to be purchased digitally from third party stores?

That’s a very interesting strategy and I hope it plays out for them, but I wonder if they would have done the same if the Windows Store had been just a tad bit more successful :p

You can only download games from the XBox store. And Xbox and PlayStation are already phasing out the blue ray drives so they can control all the media.

This is clever way to stick it to Apple and Google.

This doesn’t stick anything to anyone.

This is a desktop platform. You can already download third party app stores like Steam, Epic Games Store and Creative Cloud in Windows and macOS.

What Microsoft is doing is just stupid marketing gimmick with this PR release.

Have people lost their brain and suffer from dementia?

That's why I want to get rid of my iPad Pro M1 and replace it with a Windows x64 tablet plus a lot of tools only run on x64.

Microsoft recently also added browser support to Xbox gaming console. I'd say take it a step further and allow Xbox to run a Windows container since it's a PC anyway. Perfect opportunity to get into every home especially with GPU shortage.

The majority of investment in Epic comes from China, so when you create an account your data goes to China.
No, that’s not how it works. Even if the Chinese company wanted the data stored in China they know it wouldn’t pass their own data regulations never mind the strict EU. If you are in the USA they can probably do whatever they want, but still unlikely.

They have a device were they control the hardware, the XBOX. And you can not download apps from anywhere but the Xbox store.
Well, there you go. They understand the importance of protecting their hardware ecosystem. They can’t fault Apple for doing the same, not without looking like hypocrites.

People have been saying this for the past 2 or 3 generations, but as far as I'm aware, it still hasn't happened.

Microsoft said they'd do it, people complained, Microsoft backed off on the plan to do it.

That is true but you can buy a digital code from Amazon, Target, etc. At the end of the day, any company will fight to the end to protect their revenue streams. Apple didn't get to the size they are by being nice. The consumer will always play second fiddle to the shareholder.

not when SJ was running the show. During his tenure, shareholders always played second fiddle to the customer experience.

"So, as people reflect on Steve Jobs’ legacy, surely one fundamental issue should be his attitude toward corporate purpose — with his devotion to customers, not shareholders, and his ability to withstand short-term pressures in the name of product excellence."

Every game sold for the XBOX, Microsoft gets a cut and it's quite high 15-30% depending on the developer. You can look at the court case with EPIC vs Apple where Microsoft gave evidence and were asked about the difference between PC's and XBOX and Smartphones and they discussed it.

Microsoft has no plans to allow game stores. Also you may remember that Microsoft now allows third party payment systems on their Microsoft store too (this same one that they're allowing third party stores on) and you don't have to give Microsoft a cut.

UNLESS you make a game, then you have to use Microsofts payment system. They did this specifically because they want to argue games are different to other kinds of software to protect the XBOX.

So you can install the Epic Games Store from the Microsoft Store.

But is that the same as the Epic Games Launcher? Which itself is also a store?

This is a funny PR stunt. Of course, Epic game store is already available on Windows (you just have to download their app from the epic website). By integrating alternative stores into their Windows store, Microsoft is a) drawing attention to their own store and b) opens up a possibility to block free software installs in the future.

P.S. And of course, Epic game store is also available on macOS.
Agreed - it also means the Epic Game Store could be additional bloatware in Windows 11 feature releases (like the Spotify malware app).

From a consumer standpoint, there is no reason why I should have to first download the epic App Store from the windows store, just so I can download Fortnite, vs simply searching for and downloading Fortnite directly from the App Store.

What’s next? I need to download a Facebook App Store just for Facebook games, a Google App Store just for gmail and YouTube, and an Amazon App Store just for their exclusive content?

From the end user perspective, what Apple is doing is absolutely correct, by making these games available in the iOS App Store so users can download them individually without having to jump through the hoops that Epic requires of them. Everything, from updates to purchases, is managed through a single unified storefront, and Apple’s degree of scrutiny, however flawed, is still likely going to be more rigorous than these other companies where my privacy is concerned, especially when it comes to enforcing practices like ATT and Sign In with Apple.

Microsoft proved years ago that you can make a secure OS without having to lock down the application distribution model. All Apple does is try to keep their cash cow making money.
Microsoft Windows and macOS have identical methods for software install including the Epic 'game store.' On the Mac you can also use Steam. This is 100% a stunt. When they open up the X-Box to competing stores I'll listen.
