What makes the iPhone great is that Apple controls both hardware and software. Desktops and laptops can get away with the Windows business model where you have a bunch of different hardware, but touch devices like phones and tablets are different.

If MS made their own phone, it would compete with the iPhone. But then everybody who wanted a Windows Phone 7 device would buy the MS phone, and hardware makers wouldn't buy their software anymore.

That's why the partnership with Nokia is good news. They can work closely with a good hardware maker without having to make their own phone.

The Zune HD is such a gorgeous looking device, much better than anything Apple puts out.

It is a nice looking device, but I wouldn't go as far as that. I think that Microsoft is smart in discontinuing a product that isn't doing well and concentrating on integrating the Zune with WP7.

i guess its ok but what does that word say at the top, why is everything cut off

It's in a deep view. Thing is, when you click on Music, it sort of zooms in but the text stays in the background. It's quite artistic, but it's not there for reading.

Then go buy it

Damn, Windows Phone 7 is too sexy. It even makes transit apps look good. If this were iOS, we would be stuck with pinstripe backgrounds from the 80's and horrifically styled "3D" buttons that look terrible, not to mention the terrible typography in iOS that is too small in many cases or have terrible formatting that makes it look unfinished.

First of all, I disagree completely.
Secondly;Anyone who looks at a screen and is describing the screen as "sexy", has a very weird and disturbing understanding of the word "sexy".
Third, Do you always go for style over substance?

WP7 can finish a very distant 3rd place in North America and still be #2 globally. Nokia can lose the European crowd and still dominate in volume sales. It is no different than Xbox 360 being a hit in the U.S. and being a flop in Japan.

Outside NA, Nokia's brand recognition is BIG. China and India make up 36% of the world population and each over a billion. Indonesia ranks 4th. Pakistan ranks 6th. That is four Asian countries in the Top 6. Then you have Bangladesh, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand in the Top 20. Nokia targets Asia, and they will continue to sell in large volumes. They can lose Europe if the Euros hate an American company like Microsoft and still be #1 in sales. All the European countries still won't make up the entire population from China and India alone. Nokia would never lose Europe though. It is the only European powerhouse in the cell phone industry that exist there and they will still pride Nokia over there. Most of the major players are American or Asian.

True, many Asian countries' income is much lower than NA and Europe. Doesn't matter. Not everybody can afford paying for iPhones in those poorer countries either. And iPhones are more expensive over there in those "poorer" but developing countries. Ten years ago, many Americans didn't even know what texting yet. It didn't catch fire until a few years later. I remember visiting Manila in November 2001 and texting was already big there. By 2002-2003, Asia had 3G and cameraphones. It is the reason why Nokia never wanted to target their smartphones for the American audience. They don't care. Nokia's smartphones were big and ugly compared to our thin flip phones, but they were more versatile and powerful.

It is a global perspective and not just certain continents. That is why people who scoffed at the Microsoft + Nokia deal don't have the foresight to know how big it will be in the longer-term and globally. To criticize a 4-month old OS when many people are stuck with a contract and only looking at sales domestically is being myopic about it. Reach out to Asia and you win volume sales.

iOS vs Android vs WP7 is the three-horse race in the mobile OS wars.

BB OS 7, webOS, and Meego will be for the core/niche crowd. I think of it like Linux or people who are smart enough to use Firefox, Chrome, or Opera over Internet Explorer. They could be superior browsers, but will be less popular. Symbian will be demoted to the lower-end.

First, I don't care.

Second, a hot girl, porn, or an artistically designed interface on a screen is sexy.

Third, of course we choose style over substance. This is an Apple forum after all made up of hipsters that go with the latest trends.

Also to follow up on this, all current WP7 manufacturers have very close guidelines from MS that they have to follow. There's a minimum set of specs for the hardware, along with the screen resolution, 3 specific front facing buttons. I played with 4-5 WP7 phones close to launch, and they did an excellent job of keeping a very smooth and consistent experience across all devices. It seems that they're trying very hard to follow Apple's lead with what makes the iPhone successful.

I haven't used a WP7 yet, don't know anybody that has one. All my smartphone bearing friends are iOS and Android. WP7 does look pretty cool, but Apple is just killing the competition when it comes to apps. The reason I'm not bored with the iPhone after a couple years is because there is a constant stream on new apps that only get better as the hardware improves.

Android is a distant second, but it has iOS beat in many ways such as notifications and customizable options.

WP7 seems like it's mostly just flashy. I can't really pass judgement on it since I haven't used it. I would like to give it a spin sometime. If iOS would tweak a few things it would be nearly perfect, but I'm still very content for now. If I was to ever drop iOS it would almost certainly be for android, not WP7.

just my two cents.

Except all the hardware sucks compared to the iPhone 4. Not even close and I used the Samsung Focus for 4 months. That was supposedly the best WP7 device.

My friend has an HTC HD7. It's pretty to look at but incredibly limited in functionality and very immature as an OS. It lacks dozens of crucial features (copy/paste, multitasking, VPN support, ability to connect to hidden WiFi networks, etc.) and the app store is incredibly immature and most of the apps are utter crap and don't work properly at all (half of the "live tile" apps from actual companies like WeatherBug don't work at all). The context menu / bottom menu system is confusing (icons are too small and often you can't figure out what they mean because they're too stylish).

The UI is beautiful and the OS scrolls very smoothly (something I can't say for Android). The cropped/cut-off text and font selection can become annoying (but that's a personal preference issue). The transition animations are cute for the first few hours but eventually they become annoying and waste time. The hardware/phone selection is also piss-poor. All the WP7 phones I've touched/held/used (and I've used every WP7 phone on AT&T and T-Mobile except the Dell Venue Pro) have been disappointing. The hardware is not high-end and the phones feel like "quantity over quality". The HD7 is a nice phone but the screen is a bit washed out and the viewing angles are awful. Additionally, the battery life is very poor. The LG Quantum and Samsung Focus are both very disappointing. The HTC Surround is a joke.

Definitely a cool OS and something I would love to see succeed (more competition is always good), but right now it's way too immature in almost every respect to be considered competition to iOS or Android. For someone who just wants a nice looking, inexpensive smartphone so that they can browse the internet occasionally, use GPS/Maps, look at Facebook, and maybe play some games, WP7 is a nice choice. But for someone who utilizes a larger amount of a smartphone's capabilities, WP7 is just too immature to be viewed as an alternative to iOS or Android.

Why? At least it can make calls properly without needing a case.

Ha. I love this argument. I've never had my iPhone 4 in a case and have never dropped a call or lost a data connection due to the so-called "death grip". We're talking about the build quality, the screen quality, the sound quality, the battery life - you know, the hardware.

This site is pretty humorous. I haven't been here long but it seems like there are more people here to troll and wish ill will on apple than actual apple fans. Do apple fanbois troll Android foums? Just curious. Anyway all Apple has done is change the game with each release and update yet it seems like people think now all of a sudden they will rest on their laurels and the next iPhone is going to be basically the same as 4 and they have done everything they can do with iOS. Might as well smash my 8 month old phone now lol. Nah Apple is way ahead of the game and will most likely continue that. There have been so many people myself included that have bit the bullet and started purchasing Apple products after hating on it for years. Believe me it takes a lot for me to be so impressed that I jump on the bandwagon. I seriously dont know anyone going for W7 phones. As the sentiment runs in this thread tho... Id love to see these other companies do well just to push Apple into stepping it up even more and then we are really in for something special. To be predicting Apples demise seems like jokes to me. And yeah the iphone is the perfect "beginner phone". 99.9% of the public dont want to have to have elite hacking skills to get the most out of their phone. They need something that just works and goddamnit the iphone is that.

I was at the bar the other day and was shocked at how many people where using their iPhone4s totally naked. I am too clumsy to even think about it but there they were and they didnt seem to have any issues. That was the most over blown issue i have ever seen.

I think wp7 is really ugly and cheao looking.
Sent from my ipad.

now now charlie, everyone knows things has been harsh on you but no need to go namecalling :p

like some of you folks here, i love the UI for WP7. at the very worst, it's something refreshing in comparison to other OS' out there. jailbreak theme it will be for me since i'm still having the reliability of iOS to fallback on (and the apps. it's all about the apps!)

Heh, I've never had any of my iPhones in a case for any period of time. I have also never dropped my phone. It's always in my pocket or in the dock, sometimes on a desk/table. My 3G was in pristine condition (except for microscratches on that damn chrome bezel and on the plastic back) when I sold it, and my 3GS was very similar in condition. My iPhone 4 looks like it came out of the box today, despite having it since mid-June (I pre-ordered). No screen protector, no case, nothing. Just the occasional cleaning with a microfiber cloth.

Mine is a mess and i do use a case. I have a dirty job though its to be expected. I mean i only have micro scratches but they are ALL over the phone. I have dropped it more than once as well. Poop happens.

What do you mean by hardware sucks? If you're talking about the casing then sure, most of them are probably plastic outer casings. But all have to follow minimum specs like 1ghz cpu, 256 or more ram, 800x480 screen res, gps, accelerometer, proximity sensor, decent gpu, etc etc. Basically top end hardware for 2010.

I'm not saying WP7 is better or worse than the iPhone, just saying that they all seemed to be very fast devices when used and with very fluid animations.

Hard to believe 10 years ago that Microsoft was the top dog when it came to software sales and Apple was the underdog. Now the roles have been reversed in the mobile space.

Everyone has mortality. Technology has a shorter lease on it.

If Apple ever decided to revamp the look of iOS, I hope they go for BIGGER ICONS. Those tiny icons on a 9.7 inch screen from iPads looks horrible. Then keep the rest in folders to clean out the clutter. My iPhone 4 never has any app icons on that 4th row and keep the rest on the 2nd page with folders. It has been that way since I got into iOS in July 2008. When I see people's iPhones, I think of MySpace profiles and how horrible and obnoxious their wallpapers looked and how cluttered it was with all those animated gifs.

I like the panel look from the Sony Ericsson X1 back in 2008 except it was on a 3 inch screen. What I miss from the old WinMo was their Today Screen similar to Intelliscreen. I predict Apple will copy some of Palm's real multi-tasking ideas with the cards and also finally add widgets and live wallpapers similar to Android. Apple was trying to re-invent video calling with Facetime and it was more of a gimmick if you ask me.

The next XPERIA PLAY needs to be a Nexus phone. Then Android will dominate mobile gaming with Sony the same way Windows PC was superior to Macs when it came to gaming.
