Purchased two wines from Alsace (a Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris) and also two bottles of Viognier from Pays d'Oc in France.

Alas, the shop in question had no Chablis, but I plan to remedy that deficiency presently.

I would recommend a Rully (not to be confused with Ruilly, from Loire) or Saint Véran or Saint-Aubin. This should be between 30 to 50€ but not sure how much in £££ where you live.

Excellent.

And thank you.

Saint-Aubin I have had (and greatly enjoyed), but I have yet to make the acquaintance of either Rully, or Saint Véran.

How do they compare to either Chablis, or a Pouilly-Fuisée both of which I am exceedingly partial to.

It’s the same price range but I prefer both suggestions above Chablis/Pouilly-Fuissée. I prefer them because I feel there is less minerality, the Rully has a nice brioche feeling and almonds, more volume more rich & smooth, a bit creamy. I recommend 4 years for the best age but 2 will be fine, actually closer to a Chablis. Try to find it and let us know, I’d love to hear about your opinion on the Rully. Saint Véran is similar but with less complexity. I think!

Excellent; what a lovely - and informative reply.

Thank you for it.

Ah, that experience on the palate of a buttery creaminess, an oily, luscious, taste sensation of indulgent, yet severely restrained, richness: Wonderful, I love it (and deeply dislike those thin, insipid, wines, - in that category can be found some of the seriously underwhelming Pinot Grigios that it has been my misfortune to encounter in earlier times - and, while I am partial to wines with body, I do detest, pretty much equally, those over-oaked, bloated, Chardonnays from the New World that were so prevalent around ten to twenty years ago).

I shall keep an eye open for Rully. (And Saint Veran).

Time for a German smoked Doppelbock.

I did!

And just a few hours ago, the first (and only - it'll be finished in a keg) bottle of my Cock Ale found its way into my kitchen. Waiting for the yeast to carbonise it... a small sip of the sherry where the chicken rested while I was waiting for the fermentation had a lot of plums, a strong flavour of cloves and, indeed, freshly cooked chicken on the palate. Curious!

I still had no time to visit a wine bar, sadly. Next Summer, there will be two Wine Summer weekends where I live though, which are basically a number of wine vendors selling glasses and bottles of wine in the city centre.

Good news though: after a few months (!) of trying to import stuff from the UK (it was easier a few years ago), I finally received my parcel of 17 Vault City beers and some glassware today, to be tasted over the next few weeks. Next weekend, however, I’ll finally try my keg… 🙂

Waiting for the correct weather to enjoy my newly bought bottle of Primitivo, I’m continuing to drink extremely sour Scottish beers.

I’m sure that you’ll be delighted with your VC beers, I live in the Scottish Borders, so not too far from their base in Edinburgh/Leith, and have yet to find a craft brewery producing sour beers that come close to what Vault City produce. A trip to their Wee Vault tap room/shop is always a treat, although booking ahead is essential!

Scotland is still on my bucket list. Been trying to organise a trip there for years now, but we always make other plans. 🙂

But once I get to it, Vault City certainly will be a stop.
