oh yeah i forgot about eurosport
guss i have to go buy some stuff for the olympiathon on TV

and i really hope for at least 17 medals for austria ...

I'll be watching the Arrested Development series finale on Friday night, so I'll miss the opening ceremonies. We usually only watch the figure skating for the Winter Olympics anyways...

Ok, I will be showing my support for my favorite women's snowboarder Gretchen a lot in this thread (especially when its time for the women's half pipe competition) and also all the US snowboarding women's team cause they are awesome!!!

Here is an update Kelly Clark (gold winner in 2002) The rumors are that "she's got a 1080 ready to uncork. The 1080 -- three complete rotations -- has never been done by a woman, but Kelly might be the first. But will she pull it in the Olympic final? She needs to feel comfortable with the trick first and has to know that she needs to pull it. For example, don't think you'd see it on a first run but if she's losing on her second run and needs a big score ... watch out."

OMG I AM SO, SO, SO EXCITED!!! CANNOT WAIT UNTIL MONDAY!!

Anyway, also for the men I found the pics of Gretchen's FHM photo shoot!

I only saw the end bit, but how awesome were those opening ceremonies?

Nessun Dorma by Pavarotti was awesome, and my dad said Peter Gabriel did a song too.

It's always odd when the Olympics aren't in the country in which you live since you have to deal with the time zone differences.

Although I like the Winter Olympics, my heart is always more into the Summer Games. I guess I'm not much of a winter sport person...

Hearing that little girl sing the Italian national anthem was wonderful....i felt it...real nice.
Aw, now you've spoiled it for me, since I didn't start watching yet here on the west coast. Now that I already know what will happen, I guess I'll skip these games and wait 2 years for the next ones. ;)

Spoiler warning for Dr. Q. Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma was just over the top, that is if you like that sort of thing. I like that sort of thing. Great night.

Likewise, that was AWESOME.

On behalf of, er, myself, I'd like to thank the Italian Olympic Committee for a ****ING AWESOME BIRTHDAY PRESENT in the form of a Ferrari F2005 doing doughnuts in the middle of the Olympic stadium, and Peter Gabriel singing "Imagine". Oh, and Pavarotti too. I swear, his name should be next to the definition of "Operatic Tenor"

When I first saw the Ferrari, I thought "Awesome! They'd better give it a run." Then they did, and I thought "Doughnut! Doughnut! Doughnut! Doughnut!". Then the driver (Either Gene or Badoer, he was too tan for Schumi and too wrinkled for Massa) did some doughnuts, and I WENT INSANE! Even if I can't go out tomorrow because of the snow, my weekend will have been awesome just for that.

BEST OPENING CEREMONIES EVER!

I just finished watching the Opening Ceremonies, and all I have to say is "WOW!"

That is the most impressive opening ceremony I have ever seen.

There was more than one ceremony?:D

About to start watching the replay, the live broadcast was at 5:30am this morning - no way am I getting up to watch that!

I hope it's the best Opening Ceremony ever!!

The driver was actually Valentino Rossi. At least thats what the Dutch commentator said when I was watching. That was pretty cool. The rest of the show besides Peter Gabriel, Pavarotti and the entering of the athletes was pretty darn boring. It always is though.

Rick Birch has really dropped the ball this time. Sydney was good, this is just boring.

That's the problem with these old countries, there are so many eras to go through showing (yet again) the contributions to the arts etc. At least with ours we just went through three or four to get to Greg Norman riding around on a big shark.....

Bring on the Ferrari!!! I couldn't give a stuff about Peter Gabriel, I want to see a bloody F1 car doing some circle work.

Ferrari

I can't find a video of the Ferrari show anywhere, but here's a picture.

Peter Gabriel sucked. Someone put him out of his misery.

Torch lighting was cool though.

As you will clearly see over the next couple of weeks, the skill truly lies in the winter olympics.

I know. I mean, skiing is just a fundamentally unsound idea -- to take waxed pieces of wood, strap them to your feet, and then propel yourself down an ice coated mountain. I guess the rising and wannabe bourgeois need to find risk somewhere.

And boarding is just weird -- clearly a sport for the privileged, but simultaneously positioning itself as "young and subversive." But what exactly is boarding (surf, skate or snow) actually subverting? Just the abstract concept of authority? I guess it fits adolescent psychology, but there are so many better things for adults to subvert ...

(Which is why, in the end, we go skiing?)

Really. I'm still stuck on the mascots, though ...

I completely agree. I could watch curling for HOURS. It's so weird with the brooms and shoving of the thing and... it's just so neat!

Curling's my favourite too! I love that little shimmy they do down the ice. :D

Me too! I got really into (watching) it in the last olympics, and it just happened that was the year the Brits kicked ass. :) Was hugely exciting.

I quite fancy giving it a try for real sometime (although me and my brother had a session in our parents kitchen with a broom and a piece of ice. That went down well). :D
