Not that it matters much, but the Winter Olympics were conceived by Europeans and they chose sports that they were already good at. (Of course we would do the same if given the chance.) So it's not really a matter of underdogs making good.
 
The NBC Olympic coverage was beaten (based on # of viewers) by rival networks on 7 out of 17 days. A 20-year low for Olympic TV ratings.

I know you're talking about American viewers not watching it, but could that be because it was garbage? NBC did a horrible job covering the olympics. The CBC did a much better job, and without any actual shows to watch on NBC I didn't even stop on it when I was channel surfing.
