Magsafe will not be just for charging phone it will eventually allows data transfer, you will probably need to buy a new puck that will do both charging and data transfer.

I think the introduction of "MagSafe" charging in iPhones is just a precursor to a magnetic charger that ALSO carries data. If precise location of the charger is controlled by magnets, some proprietary wireless communication (like NFC but with a higher data rate) could be employed that's nearly as reliable as a wired connection.

Am I the only one that sees this coming?!
Most likely not NFC since it's too slow and there is no NFC-based technology on the horizon that can reach even the transfer speed of Bluetooth 5.

Most likely, if Apple does decide to introduce a portless iPhone, they're considering data transfer protocol based on the IEEE 802.11ay standard and enhancements with their own chip, like what the W1 chip does on the AirPods.

Adopting the IEEE 802.11ay standard also fits into Apple's grand plan for AR/VR and Apple Glasses, the latter of which would really benefit from not having a port, like the Apple Watch.

In fact, 2021 might be the year of the wearables with Apple Glasses, a new Apple Watch, and a new portless iPhone forming the new wearable triad. Apple Glasses and portless iPhone will most likely pair through the IEEE 802.11ay standard providing high data transfer rate, making VR possible in a tiny form factor.

Honestly people. Wireless carplay is so cool I can’t believe everyone that only has wired carplay in their car hasn’t already bought one of these wifi USB dongles to have it.
I have a qi charger in a tray inside my console on the odd occasions the iPhone needs charging, which is hardly ever, and if a Qi charger can add charge while running wireless carplay, a MagSafe charger, when one becomes available, would have no trouble at all.
Just a bunch of needless catastrophising. you all sound like a bunch of geriatric luddites.
I completely agree. I'm loving the combination of my CPlay2Air dongle, and MagSafe charger!

My 2020 Toyota has CarPlay and Qi wireless phone charging but I still have to plug in a cable to use CarPlay :mad:

I have a carlinkit. It sucks with my car.

Some radios that support both CarPlay and Android Auto have two USB ports on the back (inside your dash). One only works with CarPlay, and the other only works with Android Auto. I would suggest looking up the manual for your radio and see if that is the case. If they have it plugged into the wrong one in the back, that would explain your issue.
My Mazda CX-5 has two USB plugs inside the center console with the CarPlay one designated with an arrow. See this from Aliexpress for pic. Note: the Aliexpress pic is for illustration only; the Mazda one is nicer looking.

Speaking of....Just got this email from CarAirPlay2 regarding their USB dongle.

Good news! At the beginning of the month we launched a new firmware release for the CPLAY2air adapter which now supports these brands that we personally tested:

  • Land Rover;
  • Jaguar;
  • Nissan;
  • Honda, including Accord and others;
  • Mercedes-Benz the newest MBUX 2020 system with USB-C (requires additional adapter from USB-A to USB-C);
  • Audi 2020;
  • If you have a USB-C system, it requires an additional adapter from USB-A to USB-C.
We are certain it supports more brands but due to the current worldwide situation, we couldn't test them all. If you have a CPLAY2air adapter and not compatible vehicle, please send us an email at support@carplay2air.reamaze.com for manual update instructions on Windows PC, or you can update the firmware online on a compatible car.

All CPLAY2air adapters purchased from the 4th of November include a new firmware release, you can purchase a CPLAY2air adapter here.

FYI - I don't work for CarAirPlay2

Most car companies don’t do that though and it’s often more complicated than a switch. They don’t design their cars to be modular and upgradable like a Tesla. At least officially.
They have shown the new 12” screen with new update. It’s the same. I’m sure the hardware for the wireless CarPlay is in the back module. Either way, anything can be done if you have the money. Which I don’t mind paying. Even with some type of trim kit if it needs it.
