Still have a hard time Apple would wait all this time and delay JUST for a standard Qi charger. They’ve got something new going on. Even if it’s not far field charging, but it’s something.
Correct. There’s no way it’s using something as ubiquitous as Qi. When the story doesn’t make sense (and this doesn’t), then we’re missing some info somewhere.

If it ships with a Lightning/USB-C cable (or better yet, a USB-C/USB-A adapter; or better still, one of those plus a Lightning/3.5mm headphone adapter) all is forgiven.

Yeah my guess is the iPhone, though Apple is part of the wireless consortium, will have some combination of hardware and/or software that makes the current, cheaper, QI chargers either completely useless, or basically useless (super slow) forcing people into a Lightning cable-powered charger or something else proprietary.

Inductive charging is nice. No fumbling with wires, twisting them day after day until they start to breakdown. The charger pads has the phone sit at a nice angle at ones desk, and Samsung had gotten fast change capabilities as well to work.

I like the idea of wireless charging on the iPhone, but don't see a huge difference in placing on a charging dock vs plugging in a charger. Either way you're still relying on a cable and have to keep your iPhone in one place. I wouldn't pay much extra for this feature.

Exactly!

I got the dock for Nexus 4 back in the past and I was too excited about it back then...if Apple does not do something new with their wireless charging, I think I'm gonna get the iPhone 8 and just pass this accessory...

If it's not long range I don't really see a point in the wireless charging :-(

Agreed. If it is something like Qi, it shows Apple phones really do suck compared to other Andriod phones who have had this feature for years. Apple's own executives have bashed Qi, so if they put something similar now, it shows that they really lost their focus under Timmy O'tool.

It's funny how I get attacked here when I say something different from the previous rumors about the next iPhone. Somehow they know what's a guaranteed feature of the next iPhone. Now we're hearing about no more TouchID and this, late release of wireless charging. Either non of this are true or we're just getting an iPhone 7S. Well somebody well tell me that iPhone 8 will available along with 7S. Then Qualcomm announced a fingerprint scanner that overlays on top of the screen. It's going to be a crazy coming months as more rumors and leaks progresses. But I have a feeling maybe next year is the iPhone 8 for real, and iPhone 7S will sell like a hotcakes. Just sayin'!

Why why WHY can't we just use the same motherhumping charger as the Apple Watch?! I don't want a friggin mat or stupid stand that my phone has to be attached to in order to charge. That makes charging worse, not better. I think Tim is going to disappoint big time in a few months.... :(

Introduced later, just like portrait mode! Only this actually costs you money.

What a b.s. corporate move and planted justification. Using bloggers to pad the landing of a cash grab, by pretending the reason for the delay is tech-related, to quell the anger over not having the charger included with the iPhone. Textbook.

This is not wireless charging, it is inductive charging and it still has wires. Stop calling it wireless.
There is no wire connecting the charger to the phone. Stop calling it wired.

A trillion dollar company does not think like this.
There are no trillion dollar companies. This is how a 3/4 trillion dollar company thinks.

Well, this time I am getting the 18 core iMac Pro and the iPhone 8.
Getting rid of my iPhone 5 and my 2008 Mac Pro.
I believe the timing is ok.

I think Apple can price this at most US$69 to maximize profit off this product. If it's higher people will say forget it. If it's lower too many people will buy, but doesn't value its existance, hence over-supplying the market which is bad for product valuation. Also, there are early supply problems and decreased revenue if priced too low. US$69 is a sweet spot for Apple to screeze every dollar out of its consumers based on behavioural psychology in Economics.

Look behind your WiFi router. I'll bet you $10 you find a wire back there...

Besides, what you just linked to is fairy dust. Maybe you can power an AirPod from something like that, but it's not a phone charging technology.

WiFi is capped at 1W conducted to the antenna. The iPhone 7 Plus has a surface area of 0.01m^2. If you stand 2m away and angled your iPhone 7 Plus in such a way that it intercepted the maximum amount of transmitted power, and somehow managed an aperture efficiency of 1, you would receive about 980µW of charging power from your WiFi.

Beam forming? Directional high gain antennas? The FCC gives you 6dBi for free, so now you get 4mW of charging power if you can aim the antenna at your device. After that you need to start reducing your transmit power as you increase your antenna gain and it becomes an uphill battle.

Gruber looks a little let down by this news. Still, inductive charging might have its use cases.

A trillion dollar company does not think like this.
Why not? They only got to being worth what they are by smart business decisions. Most companies would realize releasing multiple expensive products at the same time would cannibalize some sales. Apple hasn't released an iPhone and iPad at the same time. They usually release the iPad 1-2 months after the September event.
