Still have all my wisdom teeth (lucky me!).

I think the decision to go local or general also has a lot to do with the skill of the dentist. Even after moving out of the city we would rather spend 5 hours each way, and spend a night in a hotel, than give up our dentist. He is that good.

He once drilled and filled a small cavity with no anesthesia at all. He said the shot would hurt more than the drilling, and he was right.

Hope you have a good oral surgeon.... if you know his name there may a site that rates him. That might help you decide if the general or the local is the way to go.

Good Luck on Friday!

I had mine out with a general and felt pretty lousy afterwards.

Then i thought to my self; why don't i stop being sore and start being more awesome.barney stinson
And it worked, started feeling better and recovered real quick.

So my advice to you would be to go into with positive thoughts about how awesome you are and it shouldn't be a problem.

that may be the funniest thing I have read on MR.
'Regarding the teeth, I agree with Sdashiki. Medical advice is one of three kinds of advice to not be had on the internets.

Lucky for me, I only grew one wisdom tooth and it was at the 45 degree angle. They had to cut my gum and chisel the tooth in 1/2 then take it out part by part. I've never had any dental surgery where i wasn't awake. It's no big deal. You may feel pressure etc but it's not like you'll be in much pain. Dental insurance doesn't cost that much anyway. It's like 15 bucks or so for HMO a month. You can always pay more for PPO and go anywhere you like outside your subscriber area. If you can afford to pay a few thousand dollars for a Mac, you can afford 150 dollars a year for dental. In the long run, your teeth and health matters more than many other things.

I know that I wish that I had paid my dental care insurance before I had my wisdoms pulled out.

Major medical coverage too!

Like I said, I have healthcare (good, awesome, national healthcare at that) in the country I live in which would cover this, but I don't live in the States but would prefer to have it done here since I'm more comfortable doing it here (and seemingly so are the dentists in the country I live, deflecting the issue by telling me it's not time to take them out [one's badly impacted and causing pain], telling me they CAN do it but "it's a bit difficult", and/or quickly deflecting by asking if I was planning on going to America anytime soon) so I'm willing to pay. I'm just here for a few weeks on vacation, so I got a good massive cleaning, a refill on my bleach, and now I'll be getting this done, so when I go back home my teeth will be 100% again.

oh, that really sux. I hope you get your teeth fixed. I thought for some reason you're in the US.

All 4 of mine were impacted. I stayed awake and got it done for $400 per tooth. It wasn't bad. The most painful part were my lips cracking and bleeding. Please properly prepare and hydrate yourself a couple of days ahead of time and use chapstick a lot.

And FYI: If budget is a huge concern, get them done at a local medical college. Temple University can do it between $0-$250 per tooth. Just call around.

edit: forgot to mention that my face was swollen for 1.5 weeks after. I also took pain meds 3 times per day for 5 days. Still, the most painful part were the lips cracking over and over during the extraction... I think having the rest of the mouth numb really amplified that pain.
