I don't understand the hatred to the smart cover. Keep it clean and you'll be fine.

It's a glorified dust cover that makes it awkward to hold while folded back. I have one and do use it when I'm done with my iPad for the day, but I pull it off when I use my iPad.

I use a smart cover and keep it and the screen clean, but constantly get the lines. Mostly visible only in bright(er) conditions, but very annoying. AND I'm not obsessive about having the screen spotless.

Unless you are left-handed I don't understand that point. I fold it into the triangle and it makes holding the iPad more comfortable one handed.

Nope, that does not solve the issue. All that means is it doesn't sleep the screen automatically. From off, the next time you switch it on the lock will still be there.
Opps, my bad. Must have been the instructions for Honeycomb on my android tablets. ;) Nevermind.

I absolutely agree with the OP.. My first and only Apple device has been an iPad2, and I have never understood why I need to 'swipe to unlock' when someone with a smart cover can just open the flap.

It makes not sense.. I am not saying they should remove it, but there should be an option to disable it.

For people like me who use it to look at something and then lay it down next to them until I want to use it again (which is usually a matter of seconds to minutes later) it becomes really tedious after a while and I am getting bored of it.

I just want to be able to press the home or power button and have my iPad wake up... There just doens't seem to be any need for the "swipe to unlock" action!
