The Apple store in our town still has few brand new iPhone 8 Plus left and I'm seriously considering buying for these reasons: (a) the pandemic requiring us to wear mask whenever you are out (b) low price (c) I reaaaaaaally miss Touch ID and (d) it's a legacy design that I want to keep cuz I sold mine years ago.

Thoughts?

Yes it really sucks! The Face ID with a mask, that is. Apparently they’re going to improve it a bit with iOS 13.4.5 where the lag before the passcode screen comes up will be eliminated, but we’ll still have to enter the friggin passcode! 🙄 hopefully this mask thing will fade out shortly......

Yes. I was joking with my wife about this "first-world problem" the other day. I said it sucks that we have to actually type in our passcode now on the phone and "who has time for that?!" lol

Gee. I'm ashamed. I didn't realize this falls under the first world problem category. 😌

I always find it amusing when people say the Plus series is dated. I'm still using a 6 Plus (which looks like the 8 plus) (though I own a 7 & 8 too) and never does the thought come to mind that the design is "dated". It's different than the newer lame ones that have a notch and no home button but it's arguably maybe even a better design.

No because it takes 1 second to type my passcode in if necessary and touch ID would fail for me 50% of the time anyway due to my sweaty hands.

Yes it is annoying. Would be nice to have an in screen touchid.
Why? Many people are wearing gloves also... When I go grocery shopping or especially if I go to Walmart(which is a septic tank) I wear surgical gloves and a mask. I always try not to use my phone at all when inside but if I need to I just enter the password

Sounds like a reasonable correlation.

Ok, where I'm at less than 50% wear masks

38 states have some sort of mask requirement for people in public places. 46 have at least a recommendation.

0 require gloves (except for some employees)

I’ll let you figure out which one is more prevalent in public spaces.

TouchID works with latex/nitrile gloves. Eg. https://forums.imore.com/iphone-5s/262805-can-unlock-fingerprint-rubber-glove.html

I keep an old Touch ID phone around as a backup and it works great with gloves. Perfect for contact less paying with Apple Pay.

Well maybe there is something good that will come out of these mask requirements. The emergence of Touch ID under screen.

Yea well I've never had great luck using touchid on any of my devices in the past even with gen2 touchid. The line of work I'm in has made using touchid a 6 times out of 10 success rate so adding gloves to that won't make it any better

I don't mind typing in my password now and then, I do it every time I stop for gas for my bike, I leave my helmet on and I use Fuelly to track my gas milage. If I am wearing a mask, I just pull it down for a second or just type in the password. I can see where it be annoying for someone who has to wear a mask for a long period of time. I like FaceID, don't want go back to TouchID which I found more unreliable than FaceID.

Well everywhere is different and depending on the risk, different precautions need to take place. As I said, I don't bring my phone into the store. I wait till after I come out to remove my gloves, disinfect my hands and remove my mask. Faceid hasn't been an issue for me but I understand that many can't or aren't will to separate themselves from their phone for any period of time..

I haven’t reverted back to writing my grocery list with a pad and quill yet. Hope it’s going well for you.

If only they could’ve put Touch ID under the display in 2017, but “Face ID was always the plan.”

I have to wear gloves in several places and it is a lot worse to have to take off a glove than enter code or lower mask. I guess it depends upon what you do and what you need. My face-id is still many many many times more reliable than touch -id on my iPad.
