That's an amazing number of Voyagers. Shows how pent up the demand is.

All Apple had to do was make an EVDO version as well, and sell to everyone in the USA. Their lock into ATT for several years might eventually go down as one of the dumbest business moves on record.

Many are waiting for the HTC Touch to become available from VZW on Apr 16.

Also, Verizon just came out with an unlimited 3G data plan for $29 today, for at least some of their WM smartphones.

Fake, Verizon knows nothing about this phone and I could not find any information on it on the LG site.

'Fake'? Those are FCC photographs. The LG VX9700 is currently in the works for Verizon release in April or May. LG doesn't list unreleased phones on its site, but look at the Prada and you'll see this phone's predecessor.

I'm so sorry 1.1M people own a Voyager.

Talk about over hyped...can't stand my friend's. Verizon user should use a Treo or WM phone

apps were the strong point of iphone, when it came to market (an dto this date).

But, since some key things needing improvement urgently:

1. phone quality, basic phone function...
2. to-do
3. notes.
4. almost all apps on this phone are lame. look at weather, just high/low thats it!!!??

other manufacturers are going to master apps very quickly as this does not need a big lab like PC-OS development. in a year or so, you will have many choices better then apple's phone.

so enjoy while you have it. in 2009, you will be wanting a samsung or LG or a nokia....

I always love the fact that Apple releases products and then goes on vacation for several years. I mean look at how correct all the people were who said, "in a year or so, you will have many choices better then apple's ipod."

The Voyager didn't impress me much. And I don't expect anyone to release sales figures for an individual phone model just as Apple doesn't release sales figures of individual iPods.

Exactly.
The reason we take history class is so we can learn from the past.
How people don't see that it will be years before another phone overtakes the iPhone as the "chic, cool" phone to have is beyond me.

The iPhone is going to flop just like the iPod was going to flop.

But they did indeed release the sales figure for the Voyager in the US --- there is only 1 single Voyager in the US and Verizon is the only carrier to carry them.

Compare 1.1 million Voyagers for 1 US carrier for 5 months (which includes 3 slow months in the retail business also know as the January to March quarter) vs. 900K iphone activations for AT&T in the christmas quarter. The Voyager didn't do too badly.

Also, the Voyager doesn't need to actually be an iphone killer to kill Apple's iphone business model. Verizon Wireless net subscriber adds have held up since AT&T Wireless introduced the iphone. Blackberry sales have held up since the iphone is launched. It shows other carriers around the world that if you know what you are doing --- you don't need the iphone to be competitive.

Well was not going to say it but but my Bother in Law works for verizon and has not even heard of this phone. The next and only touch screen he knows that is coming is the HTC Touch.

I can't stand them either, but they're still 100 times better than an LG Chocolate. Have you ever used one of those? Talk about impossible!

Based on anecdotal evidence, I'd say at least 15% of US iPhones are on another carrier. I'd estimate that over 1 million US iPhones were sold during that quarter. Having been released in November, Voyager did not miss out on holiday sales. Additionally, you're already comparing Voyager's calendar Q1 numbers vs iPhone's holiday only sales. In essence, you're suggesting that Jan-Mar sales are worse than October sales. Let's see what iPhone did in calendar Q1.

As I said earlier --- the Voyager doesn't actually have to beat the iphone to make it a iphone killer.

The world didn't end for the carriers who said no to Apple. The world didn't end for the Blackberries.

Apple drop the iphone price by $200 in the US --- that's how they managed to beat the Voyager sales number. Verizon didn't drop the price for the Voyager. Suddenly Apple is talking that they are not married to their revenue sharing business model.

You're right on the money. Demand is still high for BB's and non-iphone networks are doing well with alternatives sans profit sharing.

so one could speculate that any iphone negotiations hiccups elsewhere could be correlated to major carriers witnessing Verizon's performance despite AT&T's iphone sales. as well as seeing unlockers also inflate Apple's sales but sign up to their services anyhow; subsequently causing leverage loss when negotiating with Telecoms.

All anyone has to do, is look at ATT and other carriers with the iPhone. They've all continued to add other smartphones to their lineup.

As I've said many times, the main effect the iPhone has, is to raise smartphone visibility in the media.

It's given free advertising for all smartphones. And the others individually make more profit to the carrier.

Verizon plans suck as a whole. I dont even have a data plan and I'm being charged an arm and a leg ($170 for 3 normal cell phones 1400 middle of the line plan).

I am currently doing a powerpoint/excel presentation for a 3rd party based on a pure financial point of view. AT&T blows Verizon away. And I've been with Verizon for 10+ years (please dont think less of me! :D ) and its getting really bad.

They are raising their rates (new increase this month...yes I read consumerist) and their coverage for me is actually getting worse. I used to live a short distance from where I presently reside, went back this weekend, no coverage at all. The only reason I have coverage in my current town is because Verizon is leasing an Alltel tower in my town.

I have yet to try AT&T coverage in my area. But I think I should do so quickly.

Oh that. Yeah I dont know about it. We havent got our stimulus check yet and ends might not be met. [/joke]

<!-- begin seriousness -->

Yeah I actually have no idea. I'd almost hate to be in that boat, sounds like a major hassle lol. Yes, a similar plan would be roughly the same, but still a good enough deal to switch at the appropriate time. But we're currently using on average 65% of our minutes, and some people I'm making a presentation too could be significantly impacted by a change. But it all boils down to coverage. No phone in the world is worth not having coverage to tote as a status symbol or something (anyone say Prada?) And frankly, I'm seeing a coverage decrease, just don't know what I personally plan to do.

I would be very, very suprised if the iPhone is even half the success of the iPod.

I mean, when Apple entered the mp3 market, they were competing with companies like Rio, Archos, and HanGo... Basically no-names. They entered the game early, and updated accordingly, leaving very little reason for people to switch to another player. By the time big-timers came, Apple basically owned the market.

With the iPhone, they are competing against companies with deep, and possible deeper, pockets than Apple. Multi-billionaire companies like Samsung, Nokia, LG, HTC, Sony-Ericsson, Microsoft, Motorola, RIM each have an eye on Apple. You'd be a fool to believe Apple is going to take the market by storm like they did with the iPod. Apple will, however, be a worthy competitor. Just don't call for world domination, my friend.

Apple will be facing some serious competition soon, with the Sony Xperia, HTC Touch Diamond, BlackBerry Bold, Samsung Instinct, and LG Dare all coming later this year. Apple will have to be a lot more active than they were with the iPod if they want to keep up.

The iphone is no doubt the coolest phone out there...that being said it still does not have some very simple applications, ie. a to do list, contacts on the main page, etc.

I have an iphone and it is a nice tool, far from perfect but nice. I recently tested out a BB curve, and as much as people rave about it, it does not hold a candle to the iphone.

VZW is (supposed to) have the BB Thunder which will be a real threat to the Iphone. Now that the newness is gone, consumers will want something better. I for one am hoping the Iphone-2 is leaps and bounds better than the first.

Well, domination in the phone market, will have to come piece by piece :D

Indeed it will....;) And it won't be easy.

Yeah, a BlackBerry won't have the "wow" factor of the iPhone, but in everyday use, its one of the best.

Eh. I have a feeling its going to be a BlackBerry with a touch screen. I just don't think they would redo the interface... Buying different blackberrys thus far has been about the difference in hardware, not OS features.

Have you tried to figure what a similar AT&T family plan would cost? I don't think that the price difference is much.

The price difference would actually be quite large.
$130 for 3 lines with 1400 shared rollover minutes and unlimited texting on ATT.
