Withings, known for its range of health-related smart devices, today announced the launch of the Body Comp scale. The Body Comp is described as a complete body assessment scale that is able to measure a number of different biomarkers. Withings says that it offers novel sensors, exclusive algorithms, and patented electronics for accurate weight and body composition measurements.

withings-body-comp.jpg

It is able to determine full body composition, including weight, muscle mass, fat mass, water percent, bone mass, BMI, and visceral fat (the fat around organs), plus it provides a cardiovascular assessment that determines standing heart rate and provides a vascular age based on Pulse Wave Velocity, a measurement based on arterial stiffness. It also includes a nerve health assessment that offers a nerve health score computed from electrochemical skin conductance through the feet.

Withings says that this is the first scale that is able to measure body fat, visceral fat, vascular age, and nerve health in a single consumer device.

The Health+ service that Withings is launching alongside the scale is designed to unlock additional features in the Health Mate app used with Withings smart devices. It offers new details and metrics for a more complete overview of health, along with six-week habit building modules to help users achieve health goals.

Health+ can be used for logging mood, food, and sleep, with Withings providing daily plans that include suggested recipes and workouts. Health+ also allows users to correlate data to see how and when different metrics evolve when using the information obtained from the scale.

The Body Comp scale with Health+ integration will be available from the Withings website starting on October 4, and it will be priced at $209.95. That price point includes the scale and a 12-month Health+ subscription.

I’d be interested in using this without the subscription service (depending on what functions I still have access to at that point) if it integrated with the Apple Health app in some way. Does anybody know more about how the 2 work together? Or do I have to do everything within Withings’ own app?

I got Withings' cheapest Body scale, which was on sale at about $35. I have friends who purchased their more expensive scales they told me its more advanced sensors are wrong half the time, if they work at all.

Perhaps this new premium scale will work more reliably and more accurately, but its sad that even at $210 MSRP, it still uses the tiny black and white display from their cheapest scale.

And regarding Health+, how much? Unless it's $20/year or less, I can't imagine there would be many takers. I am afraid most of this scale's more valuable feature will be behind this subscription paywall.

Yeah I just googled it - The article did not mention HealthKit support but I found this info on Withings’ website

Looks like you can have this automatically integrate all of the health data into HealthKit

Yeah, I would definitely consider getting one if Amazon puts puts it on sale but only if I’m not required to subscribe to Withings’ yearly service

Yeah, I already have one of Withings smart scales but I don’t think it’s set up correctly as I have no health metrics in my Health app besides whatever my Apple Watch picks up. I’ll have to take a look at it… as of now it’s not entirely clear what I’d be getting with this scale over my existing scale if I’m not interested in paying for a subscription after the first (mandatory) 12 months.

Yeah, I wish this article would talk more about how this can potentially integrate with Apple but there isn’t even a mention of HealthKit on here

I’ll have to do more research on this. I knew that there where HealthKit compatible scales but this one seems to do a lot more than the ones I’ve seen so hopefully this does in fact offer all or most of these features but without a subscription

I have a withings scale and health mate integrates with Health seamlessly. You can find out whether you're synced on the profile page in health mate, and in Health you can view data sources to confirm.

It's interesting to see a paid version of health mate. I just bought a withings thermo a couple of weeks ago and the thermo app says it's being deprecated, moving into health mate. I wonder if any of that stuff will become paywalled, it's a shame when already paying a premium for these things. $210 compared to a $25 analog scale that will never need batteries or anything else, and you can manually input weight into Health.

Thanks!

Good to know. Seems like this scale can integrate with HealthKit much more than I thought that it had the capability of doing. At $210, along with these additional capabilities in this new version, it definitely would be worth considering if it gives users most, if not all of these new features but without a subscription - especially if Amazon has this on sale over black friday this year

Withings uses Health Mate which gives it's data to Apple Health when you allow it,

Are they now authorized to use Pulse Wave Technology to measure the stiffness of the arteries? I recall they had that in the last high end model but Nokia had removed it as they didnt get clearance.

i legitimately don’t understand how this company is still in business. They are absolute clowns thinking they can essentially re-release the same scale 8 different ways for climbing prices and then charge a subscription on top of that.

Their scales are beyond buggy. They randomly change units all the time, autonomously. There are a often login issues with the Health Mate app. The data is often wrong as well, as others have mentioned — I wouldn’t put much stock in any of the fat % data.

I replaced it with a $30 scale from Wyze that does all the same stuff and works more reliably.

Agreed. Bought several of the top end scams for family and have sent numerous requests over 10 years asking for a bigger display. It’s too small and the cycle rate should be adjustable as it’s too slow for me.

Otherwise nice units.

Wouldn’t buy if the sub is mandatory or if data didn’t go into my apple health.

That was released in 2019, and available?
Not released in USA.

I live in Europe and I’ve had mine a year going to send it back for a refund and but the lowers end model as the core fails to pick up the heart doubts nearly 100% of the time. (Otherwise it’s a nice unit.

Bought the lower end unit for my 90yo mom and it works perfectly.)

I sent my PWV unit back for the refund. If he feature was then recertified over here so I bought another unit last year. Bought one for my mom in the us and this feature is disabled in USA.
