Why does everything seem to be a subscription now? Feels like you can't buy anything without committing to a subscription model to continue using it...
"You will own nothing and be happy" said s the WEF. The reason everything comes with a subscription is so you spend more money and own less. Like renting a home over owning one, you help other people cash in while doing nothing for you.

I was a happy withings customer, have almost all their products for various family members, but now that they offer a subscription, it means I'm out. Their products are premium priced already. Whatever is in that subscription costs them next to nothing. Moreover, I have contributed to developing those products with my data.

I'm personally waiting for the Body Scan scale, which was announced to be releasing in November/ January. I've been on a weight loss journey and I've gone from 365lbs to 165lbs. Apple Watch, Withings Scales, Withings Blood Pressure monitor have all been key in my weightloss journey.

While other devices have done well, I'm a big fan of the wifi connected devices since you don't need to phone to always update the results.

Ive been syncing Health Mate and Apple Health and use both daily to understand where I am and going and its been a super useful tool. Health Mate does some really good ways of representing data and helps with some further understandings, where Apple Health really is just a database of results in comparison.

I'm curious about Health+ because it doesn't seem to offer anything Health Mate doesn't offer currently, at least its hard to figure out. If they are removing features behind a paywall I'll be frustrated for sure.

Can I buy the scale without Health+?
Body Comp can only be purchased with Health+ at the moment.

There's some FAQs at the bottom. Wording indicates it might change, but I doubt it.
I looked at the FAQs and read that very differently to you. To me this just says they are not offering Health+ with other models at this time and that there is not a option without Health+ bundled

The initial offering comes with Health+ included for a year. I don't read this in anyway suggesting that the subscription is mandatory after a year. They want people to try this extra and maybe get them hooked enough to continue subscribing. The drug dealer is giving out "free" but not really free samples model.

Like you I doubt this will change

Me too. The RRP is somewhat off putting and at the high end. I hope the accuracy of the Body scan justifies the price

The fact that they are going for regulatory approval is assuring

Congratulations on the weight loss

You do wonder if Apple are going to jump into this market! My WBS has been pretty solid since 2013 - my only gripe is it chews through the batteries in far less time than advertised. I'd like the additional measurements but the subscription model puts me off - I will wait to see if/when they'll cripple health mate for my existing scale...

Maybe I would have felt differently IF ONLY IT HAD OFFERED TO MEASURE MY VISCERAL BODY FAT! Who would not pay the big bucks for that? 🍸😹 "Well, I weight 12 stone ten, but my visceral body fat is only three stone out of that, the rest is SOLID MUSCLE"🍸🙀
Unfortunately no, visceral body fat is not the same as total body fat. It's the part of body fat this around your inner organs (hence visceral), on contrast to, say, fat at your butt.

Want a quality smart scale that reliably works for years, get an Omron. The same Japanese brand that manufactures quality home and medical grade devices that doctors recommend millions of people use to measure blood pressure, etc. Withings is a joke.
This. I have a BF 511 I think for over 10 years now and it still works flawlessly. I don't even remember when I had to change batteries the last time. It can already measure body fat and visceral fat and it's pretty accurate for a home device (I once did a cross check with a DEXA scan at a clinic). Also have an Omron blood pressure monitor, same story. Would buy again.

"...I've gone from 365lbs to 165lbs..."

That is very impressive! Congratulations on your achievement!

It is able to determine full body composition, including weight, muscle mass, fat mass, water percent, bone mass, BMI, and visceral fat (the fat around organs), plus it provides a cardiovascular assessment that determines standing heart rate and provides a vascular age based on Pulse Wave Velocity, a measurement based on arterial stiffness. It also includes a nerve health assessment that offers a nerve health score computed from electrochemical skin conductance through the feet.

Withings says that this is the first scale that is able to measure body fat, visceral fat, vascular age, and nerve health in a single consumer device.

Please don’t throw you money away, spend a little more and just get a medical grade (pro) weight scale and body mass analyzer, you will be able to calibrate it for accurate measurements and you can use pro software to from the maker or third party to further to analyze you body mass composition or whatever.

Is there a medical grade scale? I guess it doesn’t use BIA?

or do you mean https://www.withings.com/uk/en/body-scan

I never understood 'smart scales'.

The best recent purchase I made was at a vendor mall--for $1 I got a 1950s scale that I can see the weight when I stand on it, put that into any app I wish and the darned thing does not need batteries! No eye strain from digital screens or headaches from EM exposure (I've recently detoxed the tech from my home to a mere handful of devices and it's improved my sleep well) and since I can plug the weight it shows into say Samsung or Apple Health I miss nothing.

I have a cheap Eufy (Anker) smart bluetooth scale. It syncs up with Apple Health. I bought in in early 2020, never changed the battery, It doesn't clog up my wifi, it's reliable and it recognizes every member of the family automatically. It gives me most of the data points listed above. I don't think we need always connected smart scales and subscription services, to be honest.

Yes I have one from the same brand, it's quite good. No way I would pay a subscription for something like this though.

I have a withings scale and health mate integrates with Health seamlessly. You can find out whether you're synced on the profile page in health mate, and in Health you can view data sources to confirm.
Even with all of these turned on I rarely get reliable syncing from the Health Mate app to Apple's Health app. Is there some trick to it? Currently I have BMI and weight readings synced from 9/28 and body fat from 9/8, and nothing from my current readings. Oddly it seems Apple's Health app syncs to Health Mate perfectly, just not the other way around.

Bluetooth or Wi-Fi? Bluetooth you may need to open app after reading and wait for data to sync. Wi-Fi I’d make sure you have a good connection. I couldn’t use mine in the bathroom on Wi-Fi and had to move it so it was closer to the router. My data syncs over in seconds and then takes about 30 seconds before it appears in Apple Health.
