The only thing apple and the courts agreed upon was the shape of the Galaxy Tab, not the software or hardware.

The shape is part of the hardware.
Funny you mentioned it because the shape (aspect ratio of height/width) between the two are not similar at all. Apple even went all the way and photoshopped photos in their legal documents.

I just picked up a Tab 8.9 from Best Buy. I have to say i prefer the screen, form factor, and overall feel of this Tab over my iPad 2. Samsung is definitely going to give Apple some stuff competition on the hardware department.

Yup, apple is definitely afraid of the competition.

You will be back with the iPad2...

I didn't say I got rid of my iPad.

And I didnt say that either. But all those lawsuits ain't just for fun.

I'm glad you find it amusing. The 8.9 Tab is thinner, lighter, just as fast and with more memory than the iPad 2. There's a reason the Apple attorneys ain't laughing.

Hopefully it works better than my 10.1.
Hopefully it doesn't develop Newton's ring like my 10.1.
Hopefully it plays flash better than my 10.1.
Hopefully Samsung has built-in DLNA on the 8.9.
Hopefully you'll like the built-in browser better than I. There's always Dolphin.
Hopefully the android market will figure out how to separate tablet apps from phone apps.
I could go on but after a week or so I gave up hope. Anybody that's ever owned one of those POS has always gushed about the screen and hardware but always seem to overlook the usability. Yes it does a lot of things the iPad does but it doesn't do any them as well or as fast.
If you're into customization, shortcuts and hunting for descent apps, you'll love Android but that's about it.

You do realize that 1gb of memory doesn't make your device better, right?
There's a rather lage discussion On XDA which was written a while back about the battery problems and lags with having too much memory. This was done intentionally because of the sloppy code that's written for android devices.
Don't confuse computer memory with handheld device memory. It doesn't work the same way.

I realize that. It's not just the 1GB. It's the entire package. Multitasking is a lot stronger on Honeycomb. Having owned the Xoom for a while I'm very familiar with its shortcomings. But I don't blindly accept iOS as superior either. It too has its issues. But I was specifically referring to the screen, form factor, and the feel of the device, specifically as I hold it. I wasn't trying to make this into a Android is better than iOS discussion, as some here are hell bent on making it. I don't rely on others to tell me which one is better. I don't rely solely on reviews or on playing with a device 10 minutes at Best Buy. I've owned an iPad since the launch of the first one and have two years of hands on ownership experience with Android. I am very familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of BOTH.

That doesn't make any sense. It sounds like one of those mistaken notions where people think apps sitting frozen in memory use up more battery, or that everything on the iOS task list is running.

I searched a bit but didn't find anything. Do you have a link so we can all check it out?

Thanks!

I agree, it looks nice, feels nice and it'll play Angry Birds. But until software devolepers start taking Android tablets seriously, it'll just be another device that'll get you on the Internet and play flash videos.
Gotta go now, Real Racing HD is calling my name. (not for android) ;)

Yes I do. It's a recent article from Steve Sinofsky of Microsoft and the development of Windows 8.

Sinofsky mentions "a key engineering tenet of Windows 8" that involved efforts "to significantly reduce the overall runtime memory requirements of the core system."

OMG i got my Apple TV last week and drove my little VW on a 70" DLP TV using my iPad as a steering wheel. Bizarre and insanely fun! The mirror function is awesome.

I'm going to try it now. Darn apple tv is stuck on 4.3, I need to update to 4.4.1 to make it work.

I was at a conference this week and I won this tablet. Its pretty sweet so far, but i still have a ton to learn. I own an iPad 2 and this device doesn't even come close without the apps and security. In saying that anyone have any suggestions for me using this?

Differences so far:
No auto-spell check
Issues connecting to Mac
Doesn't charge when plugged (usb) to mac or pc.
More things brain just isnt awake yet.

:D Firstly, I own an iPad2 and 2 x Galaxy Tab 10.1 the V - an 8MP Camera model offered outside the USA to compete with the Xoom prior to the iPad2 being launched and the 10.1 i/o given away at the Google i/o event.

The reason many prefer the Android tabs is simplicity. It essentially acts like a big USB stick. I can add folders and copy and paste anything form PDFs to AVIs, to Music, to Podcasts etc.

Mac and PC.

Folks tend to forget that the android OS Honeycomb, flawed (is only a few months old, (and Android is not even born yet if you consider Ice Cream Sandwich that has not launched yet.

iPad2: The bottom line (in my humble opinion), is that the iPad2 is a 5 year old OS on an 1 year old device. This 'maturity' is a good thing for us iPad users,

Android: Something I believe the us Android tablet users will benefit more and more every day in the future.

iPad2: The only way I think the iPad2 has longivity for me is it is jailbroken so everything form icons to features can be updated.

Android: I love that I do not need iTunes, or need to change the format of videos etc.

iPad2: However, the streaming is better on the iPad with air play and apps like air video, escpially when you use it with the Apple TV

Streaming: The android tablet uses DNLA, but the streaming aspect is not as slick (yet).

So HFC (horse for courses) I could not get rid of any of the devices but the 'current' maturity of iOS vs Android is hard to ignore.

But when I recommend a tablet Android is slightly favored as most folks have android mobiles and using the same ecosystem, is hard to ignore.

I also have the Atrix 4G, but am using the new iPhone 4S.
I cannot discount what ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) might do to the marketplace.

What is a geek to do?

Note: Don't discount Windows8 in the near future. I currently run it on my iMac and will be amazing on a suitable 10.1 tablet (quad core preferably).

im pretty sure the only thing the courts said infringed was the touchscreen technology and gestures. at least here in australia anyway. nothing to do with the shape.

Thanks. Okay, he simply points out that using less memory = less battery, so it's a good idea to try to keep the whole OS etc down, size wise.

That doesn't in any way mean that it's not advantageous to have more memory, or that more memory is a sign of sloppy programming. The more memory you have, the more (and larger) the tasks you can keep in memory for multitasking and/or instant rerunning.

E.g. The iPhone has jumped from its original 128MB, to 256MB when voice control was added, to 512MB when multitasking was introduced. Certainly you wouldn't say that meant Apple had a sloppy OS, or that more memory introduces too much lag or power drain.

Cheers!
