Grammar AND spell check

After having pasted most my old document (DOCX) into a new template (DOC - word 97-2004) AND having turned of spellcheck AND grammarcheck the system is much more stable, very stable so far...

I am currently in trouble with the same problem on Microsoft word 2008 which keeps on hanging...I tried what you said and it works. However, given the voluminous words typed in MSWord, how do we sytematically check the spelling without doing it in another PC which is not Mac, since the spell check was unchecked and if activated, MSWord will hang again? Thanks

Make sure that you're up-to-date with service packs. As of this writing, the most recent version of Office 2008 is 12.2.3. To check your version, go to the Word menu and select "about". If your version is 12.2.2 or earlier, go to the Help menu and select "check for updates" and let it do its magic. We've put in a lot of work into improving performance in our service packs, so you might find that the problem has been solved.

Nadyne.

Nope, turning on spellcheck AND grammarcheck and then adding a footnote makes word hang at once. I am running 12.2.3.

Same problem here

I am having the exact same problem, although I also notice it in Safari and mail, but I am using Word 2008 at the same time, extensively, and sometimes have several documents open. I called Apple Techies, and they coached me through the process to reset/clear the PRAM. That seemed to help for a short time. I wonder if the error is in the memory allocation subroutines for Office 2008, and the way they address the PRAM/NVRAM.

Turn off Spelling and Grammar for large Word documents

Thanks to those who identified automatic spelling and grammar as the cause of large Word documents freezing. This started happening with my 175 page document. I turned off spelling and grammar and the freezing stopped. And, thanks to Ann who directed me here.

Same problem here

Hello all,
I am new to the forum so please forgive me if I revive this thread. I am also experiencing freezing issues with Word 2008 (12.2.5), which seemed to start when I upgraded the OS to 10.6.4 recently.
Word tends to freeze when working with footnotes and when copying and pasting. MS assistance suggested it could be related to corrupt documents and walked me thru several steps including reinstalling office and copying and pasting the text of the document via textedit to ensure the complete stripping of any formatting info.
It seemed to work for a few days but I have now the same issue with other documents completely unrelated to the previous ones.
Tried also the Apple Genius Bar with no result.
Is there any new development on this issue? Why MS does not acknowledge this as a known issue to be FIXED once and for all when you call the tech support? Should I switch to openoffice instead and ask for my money back to Mr. Gates? Maybe a class action should really be considered...
Thanks

Marco

Same here. Class Action a good idea

Same stuff going on here.
I was so angry with Word - which is a regular experience.
Then I read this thread and became even angrier.
This software is broken, they know it and continue to sell it in that state.
My Office 2008 was purchased through MS's Home Use Program and is completly updated.
I want my £9 back.
5 hours time @ £50 an hour (I'm cheap!)
£5000 for emotional stress
A share in the punative element.
£10k would settle it.
Come on Bill.
Cough up.

Aug 7th... another person with a big paper and frequent MS Word freezes.

This is stupid.

If you're up-to-date with your Word updates (12.2.6 as of this writing), then it's possible that your document has gotten corrupted somehow. The Word:Mac MVPs have written an awesome primer for dealing with document corruption.

If you go through that and you're still having trouble, or if you're having trouble figuring out something in there, you might find that posting more details about your problem in the Word:Mac forums will get you responses from a bunch of Word experts.

another fix, worked for me

It was freezing whenever I clicked the help menu button, and also while editing any docx file. I first removed the plist file, located on
Code:
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist
, and looked for duplicate fonts on the system.

In order to check for duplicate fonts, I used Font Book. Selected all fonts, and clicked File->Validate Fonts. Removed all duplicate fonts, and it worked like a charm after a reboot. :)

I'm running OSX 10.6.4 and Office:Mac 2008 12.2.6.

Word 2008 issues...uggggggggghhhhhh!!

I am having the same issue, but at least everyone else here is able to begin typing. Mine freezes right after I open a blank document and try to click anywhere (help or even in the document itself). This is extremely frustrating. I don't have any issue with the other MS Office applications. I would try the recommendation of turing off the spell check preferences but as I stated, I can't click on anything!

It's possible that your normal template got borked at some point. The Word:Mac MVPs have a bunch of information about troubleshooting your normal template.

If that doesn't work, you might find that the folks in the Word:Mac product forums can help out.

Frustrating!

I received a MacBook for my birthday, Christmas and back to school present last year. I have been careful to avoid downloads and have barely used the thing until I started school this September. I installed Office 2008 and now it freezes all the time. This is why I got a Mac in the first place, to avoid Microsoft failures. I was told to use google docs but wanted Office because I thought it would be easier to manage word processing. I was wrong. I will try the Spell Check thing... I was going to wait for Word to unfreeze as I stupidly haven't saved my work yet, but I guess that is unlikely. This is so frustrating! I am writing a paper its midnight and I'm tired. Class action lawsuit sounds great to me! Oh and do I have to shut down my whole computer to restart word? I can't seem to close it, is there a quick code to pull up running applications and close them, as there is on PCs?

I believe the keyboard shortcut is command+option+esc to bring up the window for a list of open apps from which you can quit them. Also, you can right-click their dock icon and choose quit, if the app isn't responding it will have a force quit option. Thirdly, you can open Activity Monitor and select the app and choose the quit button. So there's 3 easy ways.

corrupted documents in word 2011?

What has been done with corrupted documents in word 2011? is there any point of update just to be able to run the spell checker? Has anyone subscribing to this threat tried old corrupted documents in word 2011? I really do not want to buy word 2011 if my problems then remains the same then as now.

Word 2011 for MAC: SAME PROBLEM

New to MAC. Just installed office 2011 for MAC. I've been writing manuscripts and the system hangs CONSTANTLY. Clearly no resolution from these complaints over 3 years. It is unbelievably frustrating. I've tried disabling spell check and a hundred other options. Best i've been able to do is set auto recover for every minute and hope i remember everything i wrote for the last minute. Ridiculous. Class action isn't strong enough, can we file criminal charges?

Well, I still have problems too with office 2011 too. Grammar and spellcheck turned off again though. Try to check your hard drive, bet all my forced shut downs of word had caused a mess, so after repairing the drive, word became more reliable. Still having problems though.
