Production on the third season of "Severance" is already underway, with its writers room currently active in Los Angeles.

While Apple has not yet officially announced Severance's renewal, executive producer and director Ben Stiller told The Hollywood Reporter that work on the next season has begun. Stiller said that he hopes to avoid the nearly three-year gap that separated the first and second seasons.

The prolonged development of Severance's second season is attributed to multiple factors, including the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which virtually halted production industry-wide. The second season also underwent extensive rewrites and reshoots as Stiller and the production team sought to refine character arcs and expand on the show's world-building to ensure that its "mystery box" narrative delivers on its premise.

Stiller also indicated that Apple remains invested in maintaining the show's production quality amid falling budgets in the industry. The cost per episode for season two is believed to have approached $20 million, placing Severance among the most expensive series in Apple's streaming portfolio. According to Parrot Analytics, season one of Severance generated over $200 million in new subscriptions for Apple TV+, particularly in international markets. Apple does not release detailed viewership metrics, but third-party rankings have consistently placed Severance among its top-performing originals.

Has this got the legs for a third season?

Wife and I have been watching it, but it's not grabbing me this season, at all.

Exactly what I'm wondering…

Sometimes these shows overstay their welcome.

Example: Bad Sisters. Second season is just everything the first season wasn't.

Even my personal favourite "Slow Horses" is getting a bit formulaic

I guess milk it while there is some interest.

Excellent. The finest TV series there is right now.

Enjoying S2 even more than S1 through the first three episodes. Easily the most entertaining program released in the last few years. Glad to see they are working on S3 which should mean a more timely release.

My favourite Apple TV show, hopefully they don't feel the need to stretch it out forever, and the creators end it before it becomes tired.

It seems like people are running hot and cold on this season.

For me, the first four episodes has each been a banger on the level of the best of episode 1. Apple's time and budget seem to have been worth the investment.

I’m in the ‘not sure if this season is working for me camp.’ Just having a hard time getting into it, and find myself distracted by the pacing. I fell asleep during this week’s episode.

I myself have really enjoyed the podcast to give me a little more backstory into the characters etc.

This is what I hate about the big name, high profile shows. It takes YEARS between seasons. I get it, it takes a while to write all the episodes at a high quality, then produce & film them, and then post-production. Even harder if the cast are also big names dealing with other projects. The logistics of getting all the cast together at the same time, not to mention all the production people, must be a nightmare. At the same time, if it takes too long, people lose interest. With shows like Severance, Sherlock, and Stranger Things, they can lose viewers. My mom jokes that by the time the last season of Stranger Things actually airs, the kids will be on Social Security.

I think it's a good show, not great. S1 definitely sags a bit in the middle (the lack of character development was an issue for me). S2 picks up the pace though. Production wise it looks amazing.

you’re not the only one. The ending of the third season something interesting FINALLY happens, but it never should have taken that long. But because of that ending, I’m giving it one more episode. If episode four isn’t a banger, I’m done.

The Hollywood money laundering scheme is insane. 20 million for an EPISODE??? they spent 70% of the time in the same space and everything else is also pretty much the same set pieces every week. Wild.
I would assume most of this is salaries for the actors and production crew.

You must have never watched Lost?

Excellent! Such a good show! Reminds me of Dollhouse a bit, but better.

Great. Should be done by 2027.

Shrinking is the best show on Apple TV. Season 2 is fantastic and hilarious.
I would put Severance, Ted Lasso, and For All Mankind ahead of Shrinking (and I haven't seen Slow Horses or Pachinko; heard both are amazing, too).

S2 of Shrinking was good, not great, and a steep regression from S1. I found some of S2's plot points stretched believability too far (and Alice and Louis bordered on creepy and not in a good way). The character of Brian also became obnoxious and insufferable and it became a chore to watch any time he was on screen (which was too bad given the arc he had with Jimmy in S1).
