The situation I describe seems sound...except in one area...Can one person open a second line on their account and get subsidized pricing when their first line is not eligible? Even though that person is fully known to AT&T...will they still treat them as a new customer (and thus subsidized pricing) since it's a new line?

Or does it require a second person to be assigned a phone or something to be a "new customer" to AT&T?

Seems to me this would be a major flaw in the plan...just seems like too easy of a loophole.

Yes you can start a second line just to get a new phone. Tell the CSR's your plan and they'll make sure you walk out with everything setup right and having the 3GS on your original line.

Only if you are planning to use both of the phones. If you just have one line that uses an iPhone and another which is basically not used, you don't need to pay for data.

I think... AT&T confuses me so much and I get a different story depending on what day of the week it is...

Close, you would actually have the data plan for say two months. You call up AT&T and claim that the iPhone(the one you're not using) was stolen and AT&T will cancel the data plan. Until this policy changes internally at AT&T you can get away with it and only end up paying about $60 extra. Then you only have the $9.99/month second line that you could not cancel without paying an ETF.

When will I have to cancel it on the 30th day? Sprint made me pay the next month for 1 day

I have no problems forking out 500 I just don't understand why I am not a valued enough customer and my price is at 699 even though I have been with them almost 3 years now.

Same here. I have no problem paying the $499 price, but $699 is extreme. I've been with AT&T since ~2002. Almost 8 years! I'm gonna go to the store today and ask for an explanation and don't plan on walking out until I get the $399/$499 pricing.

i started service with att 2 months ago and i was able to get the 399/499 pricing.

If I add a line for 9.99, get the 3GS, swap the SIM cards with my old line, and then cancel the extra line after 30 days, won't I either have to return the purchased phone, or be liable for the subsidy?

That is not just AT&T man.

That is, well, Corporate America.

You can call your credit card company five times in a row to ask for a % rate reduction, and get 5 different answers.

And one of those answers might actually be an agreement to lower.

It all depends on who you get, what you say, etc.

AT&T can also over-ride and give you the cheapest iPhone price if they WANT. They get X amount of over-rides per year.

I used to work for BellSouth and have friends that work for Cingular. I am stating a fact, not a rumor or opinion.

I started service back in December and I also can get the 399/499 pricing. Same with my younger sister. Apparently on my account I can get the the iPhone in November (after 1 year) for the 199/299. I guess if you are on a family plan the primary of the plan gets to upgrade after 1 year for the lowest price.

Thats how it was on Verizon too.

I'm the only person on my AT&T account and I got a 3G last July; my upgrade price is $399/$499. I don't know why. I'm eligible for a $199/$299 upgrade in December.
