I know this is a historic item but that's quite a lot of money for it.

Old items with a legacy have worth to someone. I know this is not tech but I've been looking for the original Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle toys from the 70's-80's. Grew up with them. Originally priced at $18-$20. Now on Ebay in the box unopened they are getting $500+ for them. No one in their right mind other than some rich bloke would play with them, at that price they are only for keepsakes. Same as this Apple 1 computer. The whole game is "What's it worth to you".

Now some of you guys here who are slamming the Apple 1 and calling the purchaser stupid, don't pretend like there isn't something of worth to you that you would handsomely pay for that others might call you crazy for spending any amount of money for. :)

umm

That's almost a $1 million. Pretty crazy. That computer could buy me a couple of nice cars! :D

more like buy meals to feed an entire country full of starving people, meals for 10 + years and wells more like. but cars??? invest the money on changing out the engine and transforming it into a fully electric. just sayin'...

Apple could get some good PR here... offer complimentary AppleCare to all Apple 1s still in existence. Then hire, Woz so he can suit up at an Apple store and fix these suckers. Woz would do it for fun probably. Would get people to stop talking about their tax practices, which I have no problem with btw.

Davvid, it's OK buddy. Take a deep breath. We are here to help. You don't have to let technology consume your life. Don't want to answer a phone while taking a walk, leave it in the car. I got into the habit of turning off all email/message sounds, etc. I found myself looking every time I heard a sound. Now I look when I'm ready.

You don't have to have either or. I don't even have a true phone right now. I'm using my iPad mini, Google Voice and Skype out, with Skype In number. And I usually stay logged off, and I decided when I check to see who called. I don't like even answering the phone during the day. Since I mostly use data and never voice, the iPad mini has been a life saver. I spend more time getting the information I want, and not being distracted as much. I can leave it in my car, or silence it, and then pick it up and see what's happening every hour or two.

I guess you are not a fan of the iWatch??? lol I wouldn't want that thing buzzing and beeping every minute either. My guess is that will cause many accidents on the road.

Technology will never change to the way it was before, so you'll have to change the way you use the newer technology. The alternative is burying our heads in the sand, which won't do any good in any case.

I guess the person you were replying to, was just being nostalgic of an era where you had to go to a computer to work with whenever you chose to, not the computer intruding in your life everytime something pops up.

Regardless, I agree with you on your well-written post, that we only have one choice: to adjust technology in our lives and not the other way around. We have to be more hesitant before we choose a device to be part of our everyday life, and configure it so it gets out of the way.

Wow, now thats not a bad few months of work! Buy it non working for $40,000, fix it, fly to California to get Woznik to sign. Bang sold for $671,000!

What would have been really impressive is if he'd gotten Steve Jobs to sign it. Heck, for the kind of markup we're talking here, I'd at least be putting in a call to my local voodoo priestess.

“Braaaaiiinss.... Braaaaaaaai—Tim's giving the shareholders WHAT?”

Lets see how much it will be worth when is totally fails to work in any capacity.

Certainly not $671 ,000

It might cost even more, if Apple will continue to be #1. It is just like old cars, the older they are, the more they cost.

The basic thing which you have to always remember, and this goes the same for a PC, a Mac, a Oil painting, a Gold rin, or even a Plastic toy car.

It's not how much you pay for something, it's how much you can get for something if you sell it, is it's "worth"

If he can buy this for $600K and in 5 years time sell it for $800K then it's an excellent price to pay for the item, and the price today is not expensive.

Like saying a $2000 iMac you can sell for $1500 is, in reality, cheaper to "you" than a $1500 PC you can sell for $750

The "cost of ownership" is the real important factor, and gives any item it's "worth"

It's not a Mac.

It is an Apple computer. I'm not sure if it was ever really called an Apple 1 computer, just like the very first Macintosh is just called Macintosh and nothing else, the first iPod is called iPod and nothing else, the first Pentium processor was called Pentium and nothing else.

It absolutely was. The first page of the owner's manual reads "Apple-1 Operation Manual", and "Apple Computer 1" is screened right on the PCB.

But Steve had very little to do with it.

Woz conceived and created it. Woz did all the hard work.

All Steve did was to use it as a means towards his goal of making money.

Its for that reason I am surprised the auction did not go higher. Think how many geeks there are who made it who would be interested in this, and thats before you consider the rest of the auction market.

Too much money for a piece of junk. I mean, I appreciate the historic value but I believe $100K would be enough.

Having $600K sitting there... I mean... if I was your friend and you pay that for that machine... you are not looking too bright for me.

In contrary, too much money, the nerds can use that money in some other stuff like buying a Silicon Graphics machine!

If this is the kind of thing you love and want to spend money on, then go for it. Too many people complaining about the price. It's no different than someone buying a $200,000 car while others think it's ridiculous to spend more than $15,000 on one.
