I use WOD for AT skiing/splitboarding. Like cfc said, XC skiing is the activity that works best. I use manual intervals to mark laps and have the action button mapped to manual interval.

Hi! I remember that workoutdoors used to alert me with a countdown to the next interval when training with interval schedules. I usually do something like this: 12x 500m with 1:10 recover. I would like to be alerted, when on recover interval, that the "fast" interval is going to start on, let's say, 5 seconds. But when I'm on the fast interval, I don't need to be alerted of anything else than the pace target (which already works fine right now).
Is it possible to configure this?

You can't enable the countdowns on a per interval basis. They are either enabled for all intervals or none (in Settings / Interval Schedules / Schedule Alerts). Sorry about that.

This app is definitely the best I know for the Apple Watch, but it should have some synchronization option with iCloud so as not to lose the training record in case of changing iPhone / watch.
I know I have seen some of these answers before in this thread, but finding old posts with all of this information is not easy. Would it be possible to get one post with all of this information, and written so it could be understood by someone like me who has never had an iPhone other than a 7+ nor a watch other than a 4? In all cases I would like to upgrade and retain all of my WOD workout information. I know nothing about upgrading the device itself, nor about keeping the WOD information. I do not have an Apple Mac, but only a Windows 10 computer.
1. I upgrade my iPhone to a newer version, but keep my Apple Watch 4. This watch runs watch OS 8.8.1.
2. I upgrade my Apple Watch 4 but keep my iPhone 7+. This iPhone runs IOS 15.7.9.
3. I upgrade both at the same time. In this case should I upgrade one completely before upgrading the other?
I'm not ready to do any of these right now, but would just like to see all of the information in one place.

iCloud is on my to-do list but not often requested. It is usually more popular at this time of year, but even so I think it has only been requested 3 or 4 times since the new iPhones came out, which is a lot less than usual.
It is one of those features that is higher on my list than it should be purely by requests, because I think it is important, but other features are far more requested.
I will add it eventually. It has been on my "when I get spare time" list for a while, but I just haven't had much spare time!
In the meantime you can copy the data to and from a computer by using Apple's File Sharing mechanism:

It doesn't matter what order you upgrade in, but make sure that you restore the new phone from a full backup of the old one, or use File Sharing to back up the app's data from the old phone to a computer as described in the previous post (use the top link for Windows). Then you can restore it from there to the new phone.
After changing either the watch or the phone you will have lost the data in the WOD watch app, but you can restore it from the WOD phone app. This can be done by going to the Settings tab and tapping File Management and then "Send Yesterday’s Watch Settings", "Send Screens to Watch” and “Send Interval Schedules to Watch”. If you want then you can also send routes or workouts individually. They can’t all be sent at once because they are too large.
Hi Ian, a feature request (didn’t scroll all the conversation to see if it was already asked, in case count me on): do you plan to add screen mirroring on iPhone feature to your app? I think it would be useful, especially for bike.
At the moment WorkOutDoors is totally focussed on the Watch but in the future I plan to add the ability to show live information on the iPhone as well.
Apple have made it a lot easier to send the workout data to the iPhone in watchOS 10 / iOS 17, so it is higher on my To-Do list than in the past, but it is still not in my immediate plans. Sorry about that.

I recently switched to the AWU2 and have a question about the always on display. Does this require the optical heart rate sensor to be used?
Today was the first chilly day of autumn and I wore the watch over long sleeves. Which is pretty much a requirement when you live up north, and something I've always done with Garmin watches.
I should mention I wear an external Garmin HRM-Pro Plus so there is valid pulse measurement.
The display blacks out and only comes on after actively raising the wrist. Which adds an annoying delay every time you want to see it.
I can understand that if you have a passcode and Apple Pay and whatnot the watch needs the optical sensor to determine when to lock, having been removed from the arm. And that relying on an external HRM would not be secure enough. But I have specifically refrained from adding a passcode to avoid this.

My thinking is that a manual way of doing so would be to create a workout and setting target(s) based on desired pace and distance. This wouldn't have any auto-adjustment of recommended paces but this would at least show +/- difference to desired pace.

The watch can be unreliable if you wear it on top of a sleeve. Not because of the heart sensor but because of the security aspect. The fact that it was necessary to disable the passcode shows that it is not happy.
I just tested it on top of a sleeve and it worked fine for a couple of minutes. The always on display worked well and it could even read my heart (!) during those minutes but then it suddenly required the passcode. So I switched off the passcode and then I occasionally (but not often) experienced the same as you: it went black and took a while to wake up. This is because it thinks it is no longer on your wrist.
So unfortunately this is controlled by watchOS and there is nothing the app can do about it. However I did find that it worked well most of the time with the thin material that I used, so it may be worth experimenting with different sleeves if possible.
At the moment an interval schedule like you describe is the best way to create a variable pace target. I will probably add something more sophisticated in the future but it isn't in my immediate plans. Sorry about that.
Yes, I am hoping that I will be able to add the new double tap as a shortcut gesture when it is made available to third party apps.
However as far as I know Apple haven't revealed how to implement it yet. And last year it took them several months to publish how to use the action button on the Ultra, so I am not holding my breath.

I think I have the same problem with the native exercise app (I've only done one test), so it's not necessarily a problem with workoutdoors, but I can't find a satisfactory answer on the internet.
One possibility is that the apple watch recalibrates at the start of exercise ... but that seems strange to me.
Do you have this kind of problem? and above all a solution 🙂

My use case:
tomorrow I'm doing a trail, I loaded the gpx.
During the race, I'd like to visualize the entire race profile and know where I am and what difficulty I have left.
the idea would be to have a profile illustration a bit like on the tour de france 🙂

It depends on what system you are using to calculate heart zones. Some systems use a minimum of 0 and some use your resting heart rate. Others are completely different in which case you can enter specific BPM values.
The heart rate not updating is a common issue with the sensor, especially if it is cold. I very rarely hear about it over the Summer months but it is a regular complaint during every Winter. It is getting better each year, so I think the hardware and/or software are improving but it is still a problem for many people.
Apple have some hints on how to help here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207941#heartrate. I have also heard that wearing the watch on the other wrist can help for a few people, maybe because their blood vessels are closer to the surface on that other wrist.
However even these hints don't help for some people and then I recommend using an external heart rate monitor, which work in a very different way. They detect electrical impulses whereas the watch sensor beams a light into your wrist and detects heart beats from the reflections. However the effectiveness of this varies between people (tattoos, deeper blood vessels etc) and is also greatly affected by cold and also by motion. Some people only use an external monitor in the colder months and can get by in the warmer months, but a few people need it all year round.
An elevation profile with your position marked on it is one of several navigation improvements that I plan to start work on soon.
The next version of the app will support a couple of watchOS 10 enhancements (Smart Stack widgets and saving cycle sensor values to Apple's health sensor) and after that I can begin on the navigation.
