And it looks like one of the worst VR games there is.
I haven’t played it, and have no opinions about the quality of the game. That is beside the point. I was just responding to those who keep who insisting that VR will forever remain a niche product. When a VR game was just #1 on the Steam charts this week, it becomes harder to make that case.

I once rode a rollercoaster at a Six Flags theme park (one that I've ridden uncountable times prior and is one of the least intense rides at the park) that was newly equipped with a VR headset to simulate riding on Santa's sleigh and flying around a city. I legit thought I was going to throw up and had to take the mask off. What an awful concept... give up actually riding a rollercoaster in real life for the literally nauseating experience of riding something imaginary in a pretend world. Hard pass for me.
Motion sickness is much less of a problem for current gen VR than it was in the past. Higher refresh rates and lower latency make a huge difference. Most people adjust to VR and are able to play it with no issues already, and the tech is continually improving. This isn’t a problem that requires brain implants to solve.

How do you delete Facebook? I use it so little it’s pretty much defunct, but I learned awhile ago that when you “delete” it, it’s actually still there on some cloud server somewhere. Unless you’re in the European Union where citizens there have the right to permanently delete these things?
I've actually not deleted it yet, I've just deactivated it. This allows me to still use Facebook messenger, and have access to some of my Mom's posts before she passed.
There are also some free tools to transfer all images and videos to dropbox or Google Drive, do that Meroe you delete it.

My kid had zero interest in my Oculus Rift S, until she worked out Roblox has some VR games, Now I have lost my Rift S and she has mastered it in under 24 hours. If Apple wants to make roads into this area.... Roblox and other rubbish kids games is where it is at.

I've owned a few VR headsets. I kind of agree with the person who said it won't become mainstream though but it's certainly more than niche - maybe somewhere in the middle? I'm not sure whey everything has to be an iPhone like success (including things from Apple) for them to not be considered flops around here.

One of the biggest issues with VR to having mass appeal is the motion sickness issue and also the comfort of wearing the headset for long periods. I think those two things stop, at least this current incarnation, from being as ubiquitous as a standard games console say.

My word that game looked bad though - there are, quite a few really good VR games though!

The best/and closest thing to doing good, with the 50+ companies (Meta/FaceBook) has bought in the past 5+ years since they IPO'd and have been using that HAUL of cash is when got Oculus (in regards to THIS AR/VR space, Instagram/WhatsApp sure, but in this space).
FB/Meta ACTUALLY having a PHYSICAL product that puts them "in the game" was pretty huge.

BUT. This line from the story takes the cake:

"Meta's vision for AR and VR is set to face fierce competition. Apple, Google, and Microsoft ..."

That's some SERIOUS COMP, guys... I mean all 3 of them, ACTUALLY MAKE hardware "now" or at least somewhat.
This is gonna be so funny!

(not to mention SonyVR)

Meta (previously Facebook) bought Oculus, the company with an existing VR product and the team that developed it. If they are asking for people to fill AR/VR jobs it makes me wonder what they did with the Oculus team, a team that already had experts in VR technology.
Seriously? You think that the small Oculus team is enough people to handle all of meta's vision for AR/VR by themselves?

Oh jeez, that Zuckerberg profile pic is just icing on the cake! There’s something artificial about Zuckerberg for some reason (it’s some sort of affectation he puts on, kinda like Elizabeth Holmes) that makes him really off-putting and makes him seem like he could easily be AI generated.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I have no ears.

The biggest problem I have with that movie is EVERYONE would be SO FAT. Yet somehow they lay down all day and don't go to waste.

Just like Wall-E

I'm still not clear on what amazing, useful (profitable) thing Facebook expects to do with "the metaverse". There's incredible potential for games, a vast multiverse of connected worlds with a common architecture. That's a cool idea.

But that doesn't seem to be the focus here, and I'm extremely skeptical that this will end up anywhere interesting. A metaverse concept is more or less completely orthogonal to other useful things you might do with AR or VR.
In-game revenue in games is insanely huge. E-sports generates more revenue than real sports. I don't know about amazingly useful, but most certainly profits galore to exploit.

Some Meta employees are being aggressively pushed to apply for other jobs at the company and embrace the recent drive toward augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), while others are choosing to defect to competitors such as Apple, The New York Times reports.

facebook-meta.jpg

Since Facebook rebranded as Meta and lauded the future of the "metaverse," the company is said to have undergone a sweeping transformation, creating thousands of new jobs to develop hardware and software for AR and VR. More than 24 percent of Meta's open job listings are for roles in AR or VR, but the company has ramped up its internal recruitment in recent months.

Meta is reportedly pushing its employees in products, engineering, and research to apply for new positions in the company's expanding AR and VR teams, suggesting that employees should move in order to succeed. Other workers have been elevated from their jobs in the company's social networking divisions to lead the same functions with an emphasis on AR and VR. Moreover, employees have purportedly been expected to adopt a positive attitude toward the metaverse and innovation in the AR and VR space, or leave the company.

Meta has also sought to poach talent from Apple and Microsoft amid the rush to bring a compelling, mainstream AR and VR experience to market. In an effort to dissuade staff from leaving, Apple has offered some of its engineers up to $180K in stock bonuses.

The result of this transformation has been severe internal disruption at Meta, according to current and former employees speaking to The New York Times. While some workers were excited about Meta's new direction, others have taken issue with the company's approach toward employees and questioned whether the company was sidelining existing problems.

One former Instagram employee resigned from his role after feeling that his work would no longer be of value to the company, while another said that they thought Meta was not best placed to create the metaverse and was looking for a job at a competitor as a result.

What Meta's pivot toward AR and VR means for Facebook and Instagram seemingly remains in flux, but the teams working on these two social media platforms are said to have shrunk over the past four months and are facing budget cuts. A spokesperson for Meta said that there have been no "significant" job cuts to existing teams because of the company's new direction.

Meta's vision for AR and VR is set to face fierce competition. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are all looking to launch mainstream AR and VR devices in the near future, while Samsung is said to have neglected the space due to an "obsession" with foldable smartphones. Apple's first mixed-reality headset is rumored to be facing development problems, which could postpone the device's launch until next year.

Meta a competitor of Apple….??? Hahahahahahahahahahahhahaha

The NFL just as ONE sport makes about $9.8 billion in revenue. Just doing a quick search for ”esports revenue” indicates $2 billion GLOBAL revenue. So, I guess it generates more revenue than SOME real sports, but you’d have to avoid comparing against the UEFA Champions League which also makes a billion and larger.

ALL real sports though? Not even close.

Great Topic!
Really shows how people despise Facebook!
Wow!
I really mainly hate FB for not broadcasting my posts. Sorry, don't have time to play FB IG game..
That and how horrible the interface is! Completely Illogical! Have you tried to post an ad?
Hopefully someone else is decades ahead in making Cyberspace great!
Maybe if FB designed it right, they can maybe sell ads if you access it thru their channel...

Think of Metaverse like what Sony PlayStation 4 had as a ‘lobby’ that’s all I’m seeing and even Sony couldn’t profit from it. Potential sales this and that, but scrub the hype how easy accessible, repeated-able, and no limited The successes can be had, profits and spoils to be made.

But that is a difference from "selling your soul." I love my job. I am excited for my job every single day. I did not sell my soul to that company and will only work my contracted hours.

I love my job. I love who I work with. BUT...I did not give or sell my soul to that company and those companies should never expect you to put in more than your contracted hours.
Since when did performance=working more hours than a standard with week? I’ve not worked more than 40 hours at my job in at least 5 years.

It has ALWAYS been like this. Employers that don’t beg for this tend to be the exception. It is particularly true with salaried employees.

One could only hope of its demise.
With 3.5 billion users and growing, you can hope but, don't hold your breath. People love to harsh on FB/Meta, right before and after they spend an hour a day there. Only Google has more visitors. They have dominated this space and they ain't going anywhere. FB has $60 plus Billion in cash reserves. We really think they can't manage current operations while expanding further in this direction? Good logic, good math. Like'em, hate'em, it matters not. They see the future regarding thes new technologies and they are correct. This is going to happen and they intend to expand their current leader status in the space. That is just smart.

Why do you think the VR was born?!
For porn, porn, porn!
God damn do I love Avenue Q!

American investors are stupid, all you have to do is have a flashy video, some technical jargon, and a stupid product name, and you will rake in billions before having a product.

See: Theranos, Nikola, Lordstown Motors, Juicero, Vessyl, etc…

Ever since Elon Musk people have been tripping over themselves to imitate him and other techbros.

A new VR game, Zenith, was just the #1 game on Steam's charts. And the overwhelming majority of people playing VR on Steam are using Meta's Quest product. Segway never, ever had anything remotely like that kind of mainstream success. Whatever VR/AR might end up being, Segway is a very poor comparison.

“Mainstream”. Ha ha...

Has anyone else noticed that megacorps seem to have weird pathological obsessions with weird ideas that seem unwanted by most people?

Foldable phones, is an obvious one. Only tech nerds seem to be jumping up and down over this “feature” (but only the ones who cannot grasp the fundamental physical issues that no one will be overcoming). Yet, millions of dollars are spent pursuing it (each time proving the physical issues are real).

In other cases, it’s entertainment products that have a tiny market, like VR/AR. They spend millions of dollars pursuing something that doesn’t seem to have a practical real-world demand (VR can potentially be fun, but has anyone found AR to be an effective problem solver in real world usage?).

1. Most people don’t want to wear goggles to see images. This isn’t likely to change.

2. The tech is usually somehow less than performant at one or more levels: being physically & neurologically uncomfortable, crazy expensive, little desirable content that functionally demands VR (so they instead use VR as a gatekeeper to access said content -looking at you, Valve).

It’s like some kind of “Apple blew up so many markets with iPhone” Corporate PTSD, where every megacorp has FOMO, and a pathological need to make the next big thing... but they’re all still just copying each other anyway (especially copying what they suspect Apple is working on), and bringing expensive half-assed product to the market, and then bizarrely acting confused that it doesn’t turn into a massive success.
