A lot depends on how much it is going to cost. My daughter's 11 Pro was just paid for - and Verizon gave us $1000 for it on an upgrade to a 13 Pro - so since she uses a 256gb model - I have to pay $4.17 a month for it (I prefer the 24 month calculations) - the deals are so insane, I traded in a iPhone SE 16gb I use for a work phone and got $579 toward a $799 13 in red. $9 bucks a month for 24 months. Where's the buyers remorse when you aren't paying much out of pocket?
I think the buyers remorse wouldn’t be there unless a person wanted the 14. Given the phones cannot be paid off or traded in early without voiding those credits, a person would need to be perfectly content committing to the 13 series for the next two years. Which for most people would be fine. No so much for annual adopters or someone who will be reaching for that 14 next year.

Crap I ordered the 128. Right now I still have 10 or 15 gigs still available on my 64, so I thought doing the 128 would suffice - hoping it winds up being enough since I hope to hang onto this one until the phone goes notchless.
You mean next year? That's when the phone supposedly goes notchless.

I think the rumors suggest next years phones are bump-less. You know Apple. They have to spread out these incredible innovations.
What's the difference between bumpless and notchless? Are you also talking about the hole punch design that's rumored, or is there an iterative design rumored between the 13's narrower notch and the hole punch?

I’ve read two rumors that relate to what you both mentioned but are separate in nature.
1. The 14 is rumored to have a flush camera system with no camera bump.
2. The 14 is also rumored to have a hole punch ‘notch’ on the front.

Oh, right. I forgot about the rumor that the camera bump will be gone next year. I'll believe that when I see it. Apple seems to like the camera bump.

With what you have said here I do not think you would not be upset at all buying the Pro model from a regular iPhone 12. I would suggest since you like the camera features to get at least the 256GB model because the promotion is going to take up quite a bit of memory.

ProMotion does not take up more memory. I’m guessing Brandct meant ProRes video, which, unless you’re trying to do video work as a major hobby or career, you probably have no reason to use. it sounds like the 128Gb will be more than enough for you.

I have the iPhone 12, but my plan since I got it has been to go pro when the 13 came out, and pass my 64 gb 12 down to either my son or grandson.

I’ve never had a pro phone, but I want a display that is brighter outside (my 12 is nowhere near as bright as I feel like it should be outdoors), and I’d like to have the pro camera.

I had actually decided I wasn’t gonna, but with the camera improvements, and battery life, I’m really tempted. Worth it to make the jump from a 12 to a 13 pro?
I had a 11 pro 256gb and sold it for a 12 64gb last year, big mistake, similar reasons to you, was not bright enough, battery not as good, Camera not as good, sold it 6 months ago and got a 12 pro max 256gb.

Looks like reviews may drop tomorrow, so hopefully by then you’ll have a good idea of how much of an improvement the camera really is.

I’m making the same move from 12 to 13pro but mainly because of storage. I’m pretty excited about the camera too but trying to temper my expectations that it may not be a big improvement from the 12. Either way it will still have zoom which is what I miss most from my XS.

Good luck!!!

The way I see it the pro motion, longer battery life, brighter screen, better camera, and bigger trade in makes it worth it. I only got $500 last year for my 11 PM because I didn't decide to upgrade until late November. This year I'm taking advantage of the $790 trade in for the 13 PM.

I was hesitant last year as I didn't see much of an improvement from the 11 to the 12. I upgraded anyways and this year I really felt the improvements were better and didn't hesitate this time.

You should get the new phone to take photos of your dogs, goat, chickens, and mini horse. The kids too I guess.

I’ve never gotten on the pro wagon. I’ve been tempted, but just haven’t done it. I just think I have enough pluses for doing it with this release. Honestly, the brightness thing is a huge factor, and I hope I will see improvement. I turn my brightness all the way up, and in the sunlight, it is still difficult for me to read on the phone. The extra battery is a plus, although not as critical to me as it is to some. I’ll be glad to have more storage, and I’m looking forward to the camera improvements.

Ya didn’t like the weight of your sister’s 12 Pro a year ago.

The 13 Pro is even heavier.

Thanks for seeking out an old post to remind me of my last year’s thoughts, but it appears if I want some pro features, I’m gonna have to suck it up with an extra ounce or so.

This is all going to go in circles with many people conforming to anything Apple marketing promotes. People change what they want yearly to justify the new phone. We all used to love our phone without a camera bump, small, light, fingerprint sensor, and an IPS “retina” display (for color accuracy). Steve Jobs passes, and all of that gets slowly thrown away. Now everyone wants the total opposite. Now it’s “I’ll accept any weight, the largest camera bump possible, the largest phone possible, and no fingerprint sensor…..all so I can have a camera in my pocket that still can’t beat a decent point and shoot”.

I remember when the iPhone 5 first came out and everyone was raving about how light it was, but it also had a larger display. It was great. Weight still matters to me, personally.

5 US quarters weigh about an ounce. One ounce extra is not very noticeable and definitely not annoying

I don’t particularly want a heavy phone. I’ve certainly ruled out having a max because of weight. I’d prefer pro features in the aluminum device, as I really don’t much care for the stainless look, nor do I like the extra weight.

But I will say this - I ALWAYS have my phone with me. Even when I did have a decent camera, it was rarely with me unless there was a particular occasion. Because of that, the camera in the phone is important to me. I have captured photos and videos I likely never would have had I not had my phone. So yes, I’ll carry around an extra ounce if it means I can have a better battery and camera.

It was an interesting read you put up
About the iPhone 12 release and switching between different models.

Curious to see how it pans out for you this year

Lol that was a freak scenario. I think it was Covid lockdown boredom or something. I typically have not been indecisive in the past about phone upgrades. When I finally settled on the 12, I intended to wait and go pro with the 13, but then over the last few months I really just thought I’d hang onto the 12 til the 14. However, I do think going from the regular 12 to the 13 pro will be a decent jump for me in several areas (storage, battery, outdoor brightness, and camera).

I am sure the added weight will be a little adjustment, but I’m hoping the upgrades will make it worth it.

If it’s next year, I’ll be more than happy to upgrade again.
Right. My point is you only have to make 128GB work for 1 year most likely, so that's not so bad. Plus, even if you don't upgrade next year, 128GB should hopefully be sufficient beyond a year.

I'm not a big camera person, but I've made 128GB work for two and a half years just fine.

It’s actually almost an ounce and a half, and the cameras seem to be different every year, not necessarily better.

I don’t think most people need the Pro model these days, but for the people like me who buy only unlocked phones, Apple kind of forces your hand. If you buy anything less than a Pro model, they charge you an extra $30 for an unlocked phone. That makes the price difference only $170. If I were buying brand new from Apple, I’d get the Pro simply for that fact. If I were a postpaid customer, then I’d just get the regular model.

I agree with this. I likely don’t need it. I mean I don’t really NEED an iPhone at all. I have just wanted a pro and it seems like I could gain a bit more going from 12 to 13 pro than I would have the last couple years. Maybe not, but nothing compelled me to go pro before, and I’m pretty pumped about it right now.

In my opinion, any series of 12 phone are good to go for one more year without an upgrade.
