Wow, what an awesome reply. Really appreciate it. Yes I’ve been on the fence upgrading every year and this the first year that I just simply can’t keep the iPhone XS Max once purchasing it. I got a few ones with bad hardware in early batches and now buyers remorse with the feeling of it not worth it and your reply definitely made it clearer. Thank you.

No worries man! Happy the post helped :D

Sticking with my iPhone X
Used the XS Max for a few days and just felt like spending that much wasn’t justified. Maybe the new iPhones this year are the ones.

I kept my X and didn’t upgrade last year to the XS Max. I’m waiting to see what this year will offer.

Thats fine! It can be hair splitting when you're making a decision, but sounds like you came to the same conclusion I (and others in this thread) did

Upgrades are certainly more "bang for buck" every 2 years, as if you're on the contract train, your device owes no tab and you get more tech with the phone that came out 2 yrs later.

Let me make you feel a bit better about your decision using Canadian currency to hit home the point of how much and what you're playing for: (bc I live in Canada, you can swap in whatever currency drives the point):

In Canada, the iPhone X was 1319 at launch. (XS is 1379), and the XS Max is 1519

If you trade in the X to Apple, you will get $661 CAD right now. Kijiji/Craigslist current going rates are about $800 on average. So this phone, which is barely over a year old, if I trade in for the XS Max, Apple takes the trade in off the final MRSP+tax so 1519+ tax...where I live, 1716...minus the Trade, I am still paying 1055 at the end of the day.

If I leave a contract, ~280 to pay off tab, and at launch X was 600$ on 2 yr plan...I am 880 in. Factor in the XS max being ~600$ on contract as well today, and you're still spending anywhere between 600 and 1050 in Canada for 95% of the same experience! We're not talking double the performance either; mostly the same performance.

(and another 2 year contract...what if the iPhone 11 or 11S become phones that are actually worthwhile upgrading to? And consider the 11 will be revealed in early September as well, which is 8 months from now)

Use the analogous $ for whatever currency is your home currency.

Then ask yourself, is it worth all that?

For that extra grand, one can get the new iPad for instance.

You made a sound decision! Sometimes the allure of a "new product" can get the better of us. As well as Apple's marketing, they are one of the most powerful and effective when it comes to marketing.

Someone else will say "hell yeah its worth those hundreds more" because for them the bigger screen alone makes their entire phone use easier. And that's fine too! It's whatever works for the individual. Sounds like you didn't deem it worth the extra $. the iPhone X is still a beautiful phone and, to this day, is one of the most premium smart phones with the best tech you can find. It is not outdated in 2019, and all the core functions outperform most phones on the market.

Ya very true
Still happy and used to my iPhone X
I had plus iPhones all the time and now getting used to the x and is way smoother on iOS 12. iOS 11 was the worst experience in iOS in my opinion. Waiting to see what this year has to offer and might even just keep my X for life as it is a 10th anniversary iPhone that apple stopped selling after one year.

The fact that the X is the 10 year anniversary device, is another reason why I wanted to hold onto mine.
