Do you pay for tethering or do you break the terms of your agreement with your carrier to do so?

With the 5, I don't think you can do it without paying right now. There isn't a JB.

Personally I pay for it since I use a lot of data. 30-80GB/mo. I have no desire to not pay for the tethering as I know I'm a heavy user.

Wirelessly posted

I went from unlimited on my iPhone 4, using on average 2g per month to a plan ..12g shared with my husband. Seems like overkill but I have to say this 5 is one FAST phone. LTE is awesome and I will enjoy it with my data plan.

It is just too bad it takes the whole day to download that 1GB+ :D:D

woof woof

Thats funny, because I used 2+GB in a span of about 4 hours. Its LTE you tool. 20mbps. Stop trying to be funny and enjoy your tiered data Lol #FAIL

I usually use around 1GB per month on my iPhone 4S on 3G. If I upgrade to the iPhone 5 and keep the same data habits is my usage likely to go up due to LTE?

Wow.

If you use ABC data late month and use ABC data this month, the USAGE IS EXACTLY THE SAME.

I can not believe somebody really asked this quesiton.

MANY people have asked this question. Many people have discussed this topic. And many people have said that indeed, usage has gone up.

Is that accurate? I dont know. But lots of folks have talked about it.

To the OP:
I'm sharing 2GB with my husband. :)
It really depends on your habits and how much you're on wifi. (we have it at work and home)

When I went from 3g to LTE, my usage went through the roof - from 1gb to about 4gb. Its like taking a shower with a dripping hose versus a fire hydrant. Since everything is sped up dramatically, you end up using it a lot more - it changes your behavior.

Because I'm using my unlimited data as I intended to use it when I bought it? It is unlimited, and I don't unnecessarily hog bandwidth. Furthermore, it's faster than my home internet and work internet. I tether with my laptop all the time.

If you had unlimited, what would YOU do?

Don't misunderstand the purpose of my post. I am not trying to say you shouldn't use the data. It isn't your fault Verizon/ATT sold you unilimited and you intend to use as much as you can/need. I am just saying that people that use way more then 5 GB in a month are the reason that those plans don't exist anymore. If every used 5 GB of data a month or less unlimited would still be around. Granted given the greed of wireless companies we might still have tiered plans either way.

Agreed, BUT.. I was replying to this poster that SAID he was going to keep the same data habits. LTE itself will result in the exact same usage. If you like the speed and therefore CHANGE your data habits, it will of course go up.

For what you're planning to do it should be enough. We went from two unlimited plans to a VZW 4gb share plan for my wife and I when we got our ip5's on launch day. Tomorrow is the end of our billing cycle and we're sitting at 915mb. I use my phone the way you described and my wife likes to play to those online game thingies, words something something and some game that makes an annoying bubble pop sound and one that plays music and she has to guess it. I don't know how much data those things use, but our overall data usage appears to be unchanged since switching to the ip5 and LTE. If this patterns remains the same for the next two months I'm going to drop us down to the 2gb plan.

I'm in the exact same boat (except we have two IP5's and an iPad 3 on the 4GB Verizon plan) and we've only used ~1GB of data combined since launch day.

Very well may be bumping down to the 2GB plan and saving $10/mo. If this trend continues.

If I had to shoot for 5 GB a month, then it really isn't unlimited, is it?

Back to usuage. Just looked at an iphone of a relation today. She got the phone for Christmas. Has never reset her cellular usage. Total in and out data since last December is 900mb. So, that comes to about 100mb a month.

I'm not a heavy user, on my iPhone 4 I would be between 400mb-650mb per month but on the iPhone 5 I'm a little over 1gb right now. I got my iPhone on launch day and sure I may have used it initally a little more than I normally would have but I'm almost double what my usage at it's highest point was and it hasn't even been a full month yet. I'm guessing this has to do with LTE (it is live in my area and I always show I'm connected to it) as my usage has not changed. Mainly checking email about once an hour when I get a notification, text messages, facebook, checking twitter and maybe surfing a few sites for about a total of 30 minutes. I don't stream anything, I do have push notifications on for weather, phone, texts, calendar, facebook, mycalendar, share widget and twitter (I had these on for my previous iPhone as well). I'm grandfathered on unlimited data so I don't have anything to worry about but I was surprised when I saw the stats.
