Ignoring the rest of the device, here are the two screen sizes compared:

iPod touch is due for major upgrade. the size of the iPod touch usually follows the iPhone, so you would assume they will come out with an 5.5 iPod touch.

you know what they say about assumptions.

and no, it likely wouldn't kill off the iPad mini if only because the iPad has cellular models and the iPod touch doesn't.

I don't think they'd make a 5.5 iPod. If they update it it'd be a 4.7 iPod with 5s internals

5.5" is definitely still firmly within phone territory. I've used a Note 3 for a bit and while it was definitely huge, it and those in its class are definitely not tablet replacements.

I have a Note 3 as well but it was very interesting to see Apple utilize the screen space more compared to the 4.7" model. If the 5.5" iPhone receives "phablet" optimized apps that take full advantage of the screen size it may win me over. Apple could reinvent the "phablet".

iPad mini and a possible iPod touch 5.5 inch, would be two totally different things. 5.5 and 7.9 doesn't seem like a lot, but trust me, it's a big difference.

I agree, but I doubt it'll happen. It'd fragment their lineup even more.
