iPad is getting closer to replacing the Notebook computer, it already replaces the netbook (IMO). Apple needs to force HP and other printer companies to have AirPrint support. Also graphic design is possible but not the best on iPad.

My wife is getting the new iPad anyways but is facing a related dilemma regarding her Macbook. She wants to sell the Macbook (since we could probably still get up to $800 out of it) but is mostly concerned with her itunes library.

She hardly ever uses the Macbook (she is no longer in school) it just collects dust. But she will use it once a month to pay bills (something she can do from the iPad), copy pictures from an SD card, and manage her itunes library. The latter two things cannot really be done on the iPad. You can manage pictures but getting them on the device would require her Macbook. She can play her music, apps, videos, etc. but can't manage the library on the device itself.

The thing that bothers us is those two limitations aren't because of the device's hardware but because of Apple. Sure the storage is limited, but as many have pointed out why can't it hook up to an external drive or and SD card, etc? She hates jailbreaks and she doesn't want to manage that stuff on my computer if she doesn't have to (although that seems like the best option, but whatever). Some geek even told her to sell the Macbook and get the iPad 2 plus a netbook.. or 'get a better tablet'. Whatever dude! she'd rather just get the iPad and keep the Macbook instead of doing something dumb like that.

But it still makes so little sense to continue keeping the Macbook when it can be unloaded right now for a little extra cash. I dunno...

I think if Apple wanted to they definitely could make the iPad a little more like a laptop and still retain everything that makes it 'special' and a tablet so hopefully they'll realize that at some point too rather than keeping it so limited. But they'd probably sell less Macbooks to people like my wife and she's relatively normal so this isn't a unique case - they actually would miss out on many Macbook sales.

I used to own a macbook air and sold it shortly after i purchased the iPad. It definitely has not replaced my Macbook Pro, but I do not use the laptop nearly as often as I used to.

For example, for most work, writing papers, surfing the web, reading pdf files, creating presentations, I have been able to use the iPad for. In fact, I wrote three chapters of my dissertation (70+ pages) on the iPad (using and blue tooth keyboard).

I did have to use the computer to format it after I wrote it, but it was pretty easy to sit at the library with the iPad and write.

All in all, it can not replace a laptop computer, but at least for my has decreased the amount of time I am on the laptop.

Looks like my best option is to go with the Macbook Air.
On Macbook Air forum, some of the people are saying iPad won't really help me with my case, so I decided my Macbook Air if I end up selling my Macbook Pro.

Mac book Air

I Love gadgets so here is my take on owning all products listed in this Thread. I have a 17 inch Macbook Pro which I use daily. I really wanted an Ipad when they first came out and thought it would replace much of my need for Macbook. I was WRONG!! Typing is a Pain in the ASS on the Ipad. A wireless keyboard helps but without a mouse your reaching up to put cursor in every av field. Frustration led me to sell my ipad and buy the newer Mac Book Air. I dropped $1450 thinking I would use more than my 17 inch while traveling or at work. THe Air is a great little machine but the screen is just toooo small after using a larger laptop device. You have to hide the dock just to have enough room. I found myself only using it in a pinch and always coming back to my MBP 17inch. In a nutshell the air was overkill for my needs. Plus the Ipad was alot easier to have open in public.

Needless to say I sold my Air days ago and going back to the Ipad. I am going to give it another shot, but only use it when not wanting to lug my laptop around. I think you would regret selling your larger MBP and going with the air over time. PLus for the price I am getting 2 Ipads one for myself and the wife with money to spare.

Could you sell the laptop and pick up an older Mac Mini from eBay? There seem to be quite a lot going pretty cheap, and you'd be able to hang onto to a few hundred dollars from selling the MacBook...
