Would it be stupid to buy an AppleTV now?

That is what I did. No fn way I'd buy an appleTV now. Like the iPod touch 4, the present appleTV will not be supported 8 months after it's sold as new.

dont' you need the device you stream from as a remote? chromecast does not have a remote right, if not then how does that make it better than airplay really?

I didn't say better. It's better than spending $100 on something that will not be supported very long after the release of the next appleTV, IMHO.

All I was trying to say was that you can turn the device off after you start the netflix stream to the chromecast. The chromecast takes over the connection once you start it.

how will it not be supported. what it does today wont stop, it will continue playing whatever apps are currently on it and have airplay. that wont just go away. it wont play 4K content when its delivered by netflix or the itunes store, nor will it play games, but itll keep doing what it does

Of course it will continue doing what it is presently doing. But much like the iPod touch 4, the next iteration will soon come along , and the the present model Will be left In The dust. Which is fine, provided you make an informed decision. I have been greatly anticipating a revised appleTV, but I had the need for a streaming device for my mobile NFL Sunday ticket. The last thing I was goin to do was to buy old hardware and get burned again.
 
Uh the Apple TV 2 is still supported even though it is not the latest one so your claim the current appletv will not be supported after the next one is released has no factual basis, and after the chrome cast picks up the stream you still need your device if you want any control over that stream like say to pause it.

the difference between an ipod and a atv is that the apps arent updated like they are for ios. every year new idevices are put out with better specs, and apps are released with updated versions that can take advantage of the new hardware, until at some point the older hardware cant manage the apps anymore. the atv just streams video (for the most part), where idevices power the apps that can do a large number of things

All signs are pointing to a complete overhaul of the AppleTV. That alone caused me to go "slumming" and get the chromecast for my short term streaming needs. It will go on another TV, and I'll enjoy the appleTV as it should have been, when it gets updated. And the single core A5 isn't going to be able to keep up.
 
Well, with the news today about the Apple TV update not being announced until April and then released months after that.. I'm happy with my decision to buy now!
 
I just used a Apple TV last night for the first time at a friends house and I really enjoyed it. I don't know if I would get it until bluetooth game controllers matured more. Playing asphalt 8 using iPhone 5 was not great. I'll wait a little longer. :apple:
 
I've noticed them being reduced in a lot of places. You can buy them for £75 in the UK in a lot of places now, so I assume there will be a new one soon?

That's a great point. WSJ and Bloomberg are a huge step up from everyone else, even rumors from suppliers.

Not sure why you phrased that as a question, as I provided links to the rumors I referenced and so you can see for yourself they are not WSJ and Bloomberg. I'll assume you were just being flippant.
 
I got one this past Saturday used and love it. I bought one for one thing: Home Sharing and unless there is a way that a ATV 4 allows it to have an external drive etc to store all the tv/movies/etc with it and not share across the network (which would be cool), I really won't care. The ATV 3 is nice, slick, and fast for what I do. Home Sharing is awesome and has helped me go pure digital for all future movies. What I watched on the few favorite blu rays I have with iTunes copies, I am really floored at the quality and compared to blu ray (I know blu ray is better but hard to see on some tvs), I am happy with buying a movie, it downloading to my mac and then I play it like that. 😎

Yes, do it! You want to watch Netflix, and you can do that now with the current version of Apple TV. Netflix has revolutionized my relationship with TV, and Apple TV revolutionized with my relationship with Netflix.

I am absolutely amazed I watched cable for years, which now seems so incredibly awful. What was I thinking??

Imho, it's too good of a deal as it is to wait for something better.

PS: My wife is the master of sales and she was able to find AppleTV new for $80 I think.

PPS: You might be able to hook you Mac up to your TV with the right cables. That's a bother, but cheaper.
 
I'm getting antsy for the new one. First I just love the new tech toys and want something different. Secondly I really want to get my daughter one for her room and the 3 would be plenty for her. So new one for me and pass down for her.
 
I kind of want to get one to use instead of my chromecast but I know I should hold off and see what WWDC brings.

I just bought it a few weeks ago. Enjoying it right now rather than waiting. There is no way I'll buy Chromecast. AirPlay from every Mac and iOS devices is so worth it.

Just received my ATV3, gave my jailbroken ATV2 to my parents. Airplay from every device is definetely worth it
