Why so thin?

I not know why Apple has decided thinness is the greatest attribute. Could have added more battery and made it flush.

Apple is bragging about how thin the iMac is (by SuperDrive). Thin is over rated.

However it's to the point where I'd rather have the form factor thickness of my iPhone 5S remain to have the afforded elongated battery life that a phone the size of iPhone 6/Plus + its more efficient processor energy use. Perhaps having iPhone 5S thickness would have alleviated the need for protrusion, however.

I agree completely. I'd rather have a little thicker phone if it meant increased battery life.

I think it is overrated in the iMac, but it makes sense on a large phone. With the screen size, you want it to be as thin as possible to make it easier to get in and out of pockets and comfortably hold with one hand. Everyone I know that has an iPhone uses a case, so that was probably figured in as well....Apple is selling cases and showed them off, so they want you to use a case with it.

I don't think so. I am a little worried this camera may get some good wear and tear since it extends beyond the phones design.

This was my concern, that is could be damaged easily without a case. Let's face it though, most users will slap a case on this anyways... so we might be okay.

I do think Steve Jobs wouldn't have been so keen on this, but.. he is gone, and we can't keep asking.. what would Steve do.

I guess it really doesn't matter what Steve would allow anymore. However, after reading Walter Isaacson's biography you can kinda picture Steve walking into the room, looking at the phone's camera, and saying "what the %#$& is this @#&!???" But then maybe the next day he'd be cool with it and act like it was his idea.

I don't think he would have liked a protruding camera. All the aesthetic features on products from the late 90's up till Jobs' death had minimal protrusions from the main body and if they did protrude it was a tactile clue to interact with the device (eg. find the volume buttons). What has me worried is I thought Ive and Jobs had much the same aesthetic passion and philosophy. Perhaps this is more telling of Ive's inability to sway the engineers or Cook.

Agreed, people need to stop this nonsense. Steve is dead, time to move on people.
I can only imagine what you feel when people ask "What would Jesus do?"

I got tired of all the uncertainty, so I held a seance last night and spoke to Steve. I asked him about several different issues, especially the protruding camera, and this is what he said:

"Stop speculating about what I would have thought and get on with your life, you bozos!" *

:D

Would Steve Jobs Have Allowed A Protruding Camera?

I dont know, why dont you ask him?

Note: Thats not a death threat. I'm advertising for my "Would Steve Jobs..." Saence App kickstarter.

Basically, this was what I was going to write. ;)

I know. Steve told me last night, so I went ahead and wrote it for you. He's very proud of you, by the way, and he thinks that black turtleneck looks REALLY sharp on you.

Protruding camera? Hell no! Jobs would have also smacked down and aborted Big Foot (iPhone 6 +) long before it came to fruition.

My face when I see a "Would Steve Jobs have allowed..." thread

I think he would have been fine with it.

The year he passed away, the iPod Touch with the protruding camera lens would have been in early development, and surely he would have at least seen the rough concept for it.

Also, I'm sure it was a topic that was discussed while he was living for phone dimensions. As these things get thinner, the camera is one area that really doesn't have much ability to shrink after a certain point. So I'm sure they said "Well, if we shrink it down this much, we could do X, Y, or Z to account for the camera".

While we're used to seeing new phones every year, the reality is they're in development far longer than a year, and they're likely always considering what they'd want to do on down the line, and how to get there.

Product road maps and concepts for products like these are planned years in advance, I wouldn't be surprised if he already saw the design before he passed.

Took the words out of my mouth (but they still ended up getting posted, lol)

*thumbs up*

Why wasn't a protruding camera a problem for the iPod touch a device rarely kept in a case?

I do think it's funny Apples measurements weren't from the widest part (camera) when measuring thinness though. How many times have you measured how thick something is by measuring the thinnest part?

I think that's a big con with all these measurements too - I've been trying to lose some weight lately but I figure with a 17" waist I probably don't need to! Admittedly I measured my waist from its thinnest point - my neck. :p

Steve was an ultra-perfectionist, while Tim appears to be a few shades more pragmatic. The three devices introduced today are imho all visually striking, and at this point I'm not going to lose any sleep over what Steve might or might not have done. Let the man rest in peace.

Well steve let the iPod touchs have a protruding cameras

At the Walt Disney Company, both insiders and fans are still asking, "What would Walt do?" It's even a common abbreviation: WWWD. Walt died in 1966, and its still going on, so it looks like we have, what... 50 more years of WWSD to look forward to?

Regardless of what someone thinks either Walt or Steve would have done, there's a lot of good (and sometimes a little not-so-good) that comes to a company (and fan base) that keeps touch with the founders' principles. I don't think there are people at Ford who ask WWHD, or any WWTD at the many companies Edison founded.

just like he didnt allow...

- video on an iPod
- an eBook store
- smaller iPads

It doesn't matter what Steve Jobs thinks, thought, or would have thought. Sadly, he passed away in 2011.

Agreed, people need to stop this nonsense. Steve is dead, time to move on people.

Steve is no longer with us, so we will never know what he would have "allowed"

I agree. And for those who regard him so highly that they have to bring him up in thread after thread - why insult his intelligence by insinuating that we'd have any clue whatsoever about what choices he would have made?

Let the man rest in peace. He deserves it.
