When using older iPod cables, there are 2 buttons on the side of the dock-shaped plug that you need to squeeze in order to pull the cable out. You can't squeeze on the of the side buttons because the earphone jack is blocking your finger. But i guess that's why Apple came out with the new design which you can just pull out right away (and the cable looks nicer/smaller).

that and I believe most iPods have the jack on the bottom, that way if you use a pouch and you want to change songs you can pull it out not completely and do your deed, it's less comfortable on the iPhone, which is what I have
