What I'm gathering is that the iPhone 5 will be a minor update, so whether or not there is an iPhone "nano", this years release of the iPhone will not be anything major.

I'm not sure there is much evidence Apple care if their product is the most advanced or up-to-date on the market. Historically they never were. Although no-one noticed much in the US with data and 3g networks few, far between, and underused, in Europe the first iphone looked positively stone-age compared to the Nokia N95, for example, which already had 3G and free tethering. Where the phone worked better than the opposition was with the os, ease of use and stunning presentation of the internet (albeit slow). The next iphone 3g was a generation behind everyone else who were already producing HSDPA phones, and Apple only finally caught up with the rest with the 3gs a year later. The iphone 4, another stunning product, is only as good (in hardware terms) as the opposition, but where again it leaves the rest standing is in its userability. So don't expect Apple to compete with every new phone development, but you can expect them to continue to make the iphone the best to use.

Yeah, iPhone will most likely get an update to the iPhone 4 this year, but I really doubt it'll be a new generation, like iPhone 5. It has to be a minor upgrade to the iPhone 4, improved camera, faster speeds, etc. Or perhaps additionally that "nano" iPhone.

With something like the iPhone 5, I'd expect substantial OS changes, something that would warrant an entirely OS version as well, like iOS 5. However, I've not heard of any developer betas for iOS 5, at least publicly released-betas, as of yet.

Back when iPhone 4 was due to launch in summer of 2010, developers got access to the iOS4 beta many months in advance. I remember by Feb. of 2010, Apple has already seeded the 3rd version of the iOS 4 beta out to developers. As of right now, all we have so far, is 4.3 SDK beta as the latest beta SDK.

This could change if iOS 5 was planned to be release at the end of the year, we'd receive beta kits in the summer, but I doubt any iOS5/iPhone 5 by summer release will happen. It has to be an incremental upgrade and/or another model-based on iOS 4.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_6 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E200 Safari/6533.18.5)

I wouldn't be upset, just because I just got the iPhone 4. So that would buy me time to to figure out my upgrade scenario. However, I can understand how people would be upset.

Apple is smart though. I think they will do both. The idea of a cheaper iPhone is not stupid in any way. $200 unsubsidized would be good for people who don't make as much. Or for temporary replacements if an iPhone dies, or is stolen and you do not have insurrance.

Not really upset. I would not use a "nano" iPhone. The 4 is small enough for me, I can't imagine using a smaller phone than this. But if Apple decided to just go with a smaller design from this point forward, then I would be upset.

And if Apple decides to release an iPhone with a slide-out keyboard I would be upset also. At least release a non-slide-out keyboard version. I don't know. Too many rumors going on for me, most of which probably won't span out anyway.

The new rumor is that apple is testing three different Iphone 5 models. One even has a slide out keyboard!!

Here is the iphone 4 with the keyboard attachment. Maybe it will be something similar but not removable?

Don't think it would happen but even if it did I don't care cause I'm not planning on buying the iphone this year (my contract is not up til next year and I will just wait to get the upgrade pricing).

Agreed. Personally, I don't see an iPhone nano ever happening. The trend appears to be going to larger screens in smartphones 4-4.3 inches, not to smaller screens. I know I won't buy an iPhone with a screen smaller than the 3.5 inch screen they currently have.

That does seem to be the trend, but I don't know if it's more for practical reasons or marketing ones. The Android devices can boast 4-4.3" as an additional spec to get people to buy the phone, regardless of whether it's actually a good thing.

I think there's a market for smaller and cheaper devices that are still "smart"phones. Take the new HP Veer for instance. Who knows how well it will do in the real world, but it shows some promise.

I would like to upgrade my original iPhone. It still runs like a champ. However, it's time to move on. I would be highly disappointed if a "Nano" version or sliding keyboard equipped iPhone were my only choices. If so, I would opt for the iPhone4.

I wouldn't. I'm not due for an upgrade yet and I want to wait till my contract ends. So I'll let this one go. LOL.

It's sort of a yin yang user name. Unless you don't know Castro's first name is Fidel, not Che.

I'm well aware of Castro's first name and Che's last name. What I'm pointing out is that the "yin yang" user name is based on two mass murderers and that too many people are ignorant of history.

But an iPhone Nano wouldn't be marketed at us, it would be marketed at all of those people that go for the free phones when they're upgrading.

If Apple makes a free iPhone (w/ subsidizing) it brings more people into the Apple community and iOS, and makes them more likely to upgrade within Apple again in the future. It's a similar strategy to what they do with the iPod Touch.

I hope that never happens. The iPhone has always provided the best smartphone user experience, and it would be a shame for them to water it down with inferior handset hardware.

There is an article from egadget on this rumor forum someplace ( i got it from an App called Pulse that takes you to macrumors) that confirmed there will be a smaller iPhone coming this summer and it will be cheaper. Without contract is said to be $200. Also saying the next iP5 will have a 4" screen and showing a actual slideout keyboard. There are pictures of them as it says they are testing 3 iPhone prototypes.

Not sure where it is in macrumers but look like in the news section.
EDIT* - Oh i just saw the pic above me. There is one of the smaller phone too.

EDIT 2* Here is the article with this pic which is just one of several.

I'm predicting the 3.5" screen will become the "nano" and the iPhone 5 will become the usual iPhone but with a 4" screen.

People need to stop being ignorant. The iPhone 5 will be major, and every update has been major, 3G to 3GS was much bigger (internal hardware wise) than iPhone to iPhone 3G.
Just because the outside is the same doesn't mean it's a small update.

common train of thought says this will be a internal upgrade to the phone while cosmetically, the phone will remain the same. something along the lines of dual core, maybe more ram. i personally don't expect anything groundbreaking like the iPhone 4 was to the 3gs. either way, i don't care because i'm still a year and 10 months away from my next upgrade.

i don't see the screen getting any better, nor an increase in screen size. changes will probably be under the hood.

Id think there is no way you will get 3.5" on a "nano" phon that is smaller. If that is going to be it above, theres no way. Ive actually read the smaller phone is almost half the size and the iP4. Why try to predict when you can read about it the article.
