Splashtop and Goodreader allow me to access both my iMac, and my networked drives. Handy when I need to grab a couple of files.
I do this every day of the week with iTeleport.
Splashtop is the best because it can also send sound which means you can listen to your music stored in your MAC from everywhere!![]()
I've still not found a tablet to be good for content creation. I like to use QuickOffice HD for light editing documents and spreadsheets, but I could never use it for real core work. The gestures just don't work. Perhaps a mouse pointer would help a lot.
I've tried the various remote applications (Splashtop, GoToMyPC) but found them really slow and hard to use, even with a good connection. Kind of cool to experiment with, but useless in real life.
Eventually new ways to manage document creation will happen. Until then, I still have to rely on a laptop for serious work and I use the iPad primarily for media consumption.
You should definitely try out OnLive Desktop. As opposed to remotely controlling a machine of your own, this service allows you to remotely control an instance of Windows 7 that they provide which makes the experience much smoother, mostly because they are employing industrial grade hardware and bandwidth. You can use the free version of this app to gain access to full version MS Office software, and the paid subscription version provides a few extra things that plenty of people still believe they can't do with their iPad. Check it out and let us know what you think.
Is it only for Windows 7?
Have you tested it with videos? or is it too slow?
I think DropBox works on all devices and you can sync all you files, give it a try....
Plus 1 for Splashtop
Plus one for pocket cloud. My computers are downstairs I used to hate going down to open iTunes for streaming. Never have to now.

I use LogMeIn all the time. Pretty reliable service.
Never used anything else, cannot compare.
i've tried the following and none have been perfect so far.
splashtop for me was the worst. before the last update it didn't even have scrollable tracking mouse mode which made it useless and cumbersome. its also slow and incredibly cpu intensive on my htpc in comparison to the other vnc servers used by iteleport/teamviewer/etc.
iteleport provided the smoothest performance but unfortunately it doesn't have a windows-compatible viewer client (only server).
teamviewer was also meh. seemed all bloated and cumbersome like splashtop.
logmein at least for the mac is INCREDIBLY buggy and unreliable. sometimes it would just crash my imac after i've been remotely logged in and try to disconnect the logmein connection. just awful. even on my windows machine, after i disconnect from a logmein session, logmein software on that machine crashes. you also can't even disable sound streaming for some reason.
if iteleport had a desktop viewer client for windows i'd probably stick with that.
Same here. Logged in from the gym the other day over LTE. Love it!!!
I use gotomypc and logmein to access my work computer (using gotomypc) and my Mac using Logmein![]()
