I've still not found a tablet to be good for content creation. I like to use QuickOffice HD for light editing documents and spreadsheets, but I could never use it for real core work. The gestures just don't work. Perhaps a mouse pointer would help a lot.

I've tried the various remote applications (Splashtop, GoToMyPC) but found them really slow and hard to use, even with a good connection. Kind of cool to experiment with, but useless in real life.

Eventually new ways to manage document creation will happen. Until then, I still have to rely on a laptop for serious work and I use the iPad primarily for media consumption.

You should definitely try out OnLive Desktop. As opposed to remotely controlling a machine of your own, this service allows you to remotely control an instance of Windows 7 that they provide which makes the experience much smoother, mostly because they are employing industrial grade hardware and bandwidth. You can use the free version of this app to gain access to full version MS Office software, and the paid subscription version provides a few extra things that plenty of people still believe they can't do with their iPad. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Is it only for Windows 7?

They offer you a virtual instance of Windows 7 that is deployed from their server clusters. I have not seen/heard anything regarding different versions of Windows being available or them offering this with the Mac OS, though that would be fantastic. I have a feeling that they wouldn't be able to use the Mac OS either way though because they use the tablet edition of Windows for the virtual machine and Apple has never created a tablet variation of OSX.

I used logmein. Funny, I used it today to access a file that I needed. Whew!!!!! This is what happens when you are in a hurry and forget your laptop at home. Thankfully my iPad was in my bag.

I just downloaded Splashtop. It's now on sale for $4.99, reg $19.99.

My PC's screen res is 1680x1050, and when I tried Splashtop with the PC, it reduced the screen res, which rearranged my icon layout into a block. I have an iPad 2, so I guess the higher res of the new iPad would be needed to prevent that. Other than that, it's a great app. Next, I'll try it on my 15" MBP, which also has 1680x1050 res.

Plus one for pocket cloud. My computers are downstairs I used to hate going down to open iTunes for streaming. Never have to now.

Wirelessly posted

I'm using Jump desktop for my PC's - how does Splashtop compare to Jump?

i've tried the following and none have been perfect so far.

splashtop for me was the worst. before the last update it didn't even have scrollable tracking mouse mode which made it useless and cumbersome. its also slow and incredibly cpu intensive on my htpc in comparison to the other vnc servers used by iteleport/teamviewer/etc.

iteleport provided the smoothest performance but unfortunately it doesn't have a windows-compatible viewer client (only server).

teamviewer was also meh. seemed all bloated and cumbersome like splashtop.

logmein at least for the mac is INCREDIBLY buggy and unreliable. sometimes it would just crash my imac after i've been remotely logged in and try to disconnect the logmein connection. just awful. even on my windows machine, after i disconnect from a logmein session, logmein software on that machine crashes. you also can't even disable sound streaming for some reason.

if iteleport had a desktop viewer client for windows i'd probably stick with that.

Just to clarify I have been using pocket-cloud for about six months, the paid version since I have multiple computers. It is awesome!!! My wife uses it to connect her iPad to a PC downstairs and then RFC over VPN to her work computer. Works perfectly.

Try Pocket-Cloud and see if it is better, please let us know.

I've used Desktop Connect for the past year with great results--even better now with LTE. Just recently reinstalled Splashtop and also seems to be much improved since I tried it a while ago.
