Glad you applied.... to answer your question, I wouldn't try out for extra work as a career - but absolutely just for fun. Even if you don't get paid, you will always be able to say you were in -whatever- and point at the scene where you would have been if they hadn't edited you out.

My cousin was an extra on the beach for the original Jaws movie... where they all run out of the water. He has never ever found himself in the crowd... but we still hear about the day he ran in and out of the water...

I've been an extra a couple times without really "applying" for it. Many movies are shot at my then college, UCLA and signs were posted that passing through this line you are allowing yourself to be an extra, in the background. It also also said something else and about not being paid. I had to do it since it was the only way to get to my classes. Also, a friend brought me for a Glee taping for their regional finals (season 1). We signed a NDA because this was the season finale and we knew the ending already. The camera panned to us and we had to keep waving our glowsticks in the air. I never realized how many times they sing the songs for an episode. I was getting impatient and irritated. Some of the on screen actors were getting pretty "diva" ish as well. We weren't paid since being there was payment enough.

I think that is entirely up to the producers/directors. If you are serious about acting, go talk to them.... there are certainly cases of stars who started off as extras... but for every one of those there are 10,000 people who just have their 22 seconds of fame.

I would suspect that a continuing role would invoke different union rules.... but ask around when you are on set, and just listen. People will go on for hours about what they know about if you just nod a lot and say "you don't say" every once in a while.

good for you wally. you will have fun. just dont do what i did and start thinking they need you for the role your in. l lost out on more screentime because of that. thankfully i didnt get cut out of the two scenes i was in.

I'm probably going to be sorry I didn't take you up on the offer.... one day you'll be collecting your Oscar and you'll talk about your start in a small CBC drama shot in the prairies that got cancelled just as it was about to hit it big - and I'll be telling my friends I had a chance to get Waloshin's first autograph.

Shoot, I'd do it for free! I've always thought about just being able to be on set during the entire filming process for a movie. Not thinking about the celebs, or being famous, or any of that... that would be a dream come true... just to be there and watch it all happen.
